    Laboratory Analyst

    Job Purpose :

    To receive, test and issue results of fuel receipts into the terminal and samples from customers in an efficient manner whilst maintaining the required HSSE standards.

    Dimensions :

    ‘Products’ include all the main product grades managed: PMS, AGO, V-Power, IK, DPK, HFO, AVGAS, ETHANOL, LUBRICANTS and LPG.

    Organisation :

    • Supply and Distribution (S&D) is at the heart of Vivo Energy’s business.
    • S&D has the primary responsibility of managing and optimizing the physical supply chain. Our goal is to deliver the right product to the right place on time and maximises the overall margin potential across the different lines of businesses.
    • Vivo Energy Kenya offers differentiated fuels: V-Power, Fuel Save Unleaded and Fuel Save Diesel.
    • The MSAT Lab Analyst reports to the PQEL who reports to the Distribution Manager.

    Principal Accountabilities :

    • Ensure that fuels received into Mombasa Terminal conform to the National fuel products specification before their dispatch.
    • Application and upholding all the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 – General requirements for the competence of Testing and calibration Laboratories.
    • Liaise with stakeholders for facilitation of timely sampling and testing of products in vessels, storage tanks and delivery trucks/wagons after loading.
    • Prompt release of test results but without compromise of product quality.
    • Adherence to test method requirements in performing laboratory analysis.
    • Proper storage and timely disposal of retained fuel samples as per the specified duration.
    • Execute duties carefully yet efficiently whilst ensuring integrity of lab equipment and economic use of lab consumables.
    • Perform and advise results of samples submitted from customer sites for analysis.
    • Maintain high housekeeping standards at the lab and liaise with housekeeping staff for support as necessary.
    • As the owner of all laboratory activities, liaise with maintenance supervisor to ensure that all items (including fire extinguishers) are in good condition. Also participate and sign off all works/projects touching on the laboratory equipment.
    • Maintain the lab always locked when not available to ensure that only authorised persons are granted access.
    • Maintain lab operations records/registers safely for ease of retrieval and audit trail and ensure and over for archiving is properly signed off.
    • Spearhead activities aimed at improving product quality at the Terminal.
    • Participate in the Fuels proficiency scheme for the lab.
    • Participate in HSSE initiatives such as emergency drills, PI and near miss reporting, walk about and incentives scheme.
    • Carry out duties as may be assigned by management from time to time.

    Key Challenges :

    • To ensure integrity, timeliness, and accuracy of product quality assurance tests at the Terminal. This requires detail and ability to work long hours with various people without losing focus.
    • Prioritise work to minimise delays in feedback of results to the relevant functions.
    • Keep abreast with the relevant functions on issues of new equipment technology, improvisation of the existing test methods and assimilation of new test methods.

    Requirements

    Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

    • Degree in Analytical Chemistry or Equivalent.
    • At least two years’ experience in a busy fuel testing laboratory.
    • Zero tolerance for lack of controls.
    • Should be self-driven, able to work independently to deliver results and honest.
    • Ability to work for long hours without losing focus.
    • Ability to pay attention to detail.
    • Very keen on HSSE.
    • Excellent Knowledge and application of ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 requirements.
    • Experience in SAP is an added advantage.
