    Master Crafts Technician Instructor

    About the Role

    • Rafiki wa Maendeleo Trust, through the Rarieda Training and Resource Centre (RTRC), is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Master Crafts technician Instructor to lead the delivery of the Integrated Repair & Maintenance Programme (IRMP)—a practical, impact-driven training programme.

This hands-on role focuses on equipping youth with the skills required to become multi-skilled technicians, capable of carrying out repair, maintenance, and basic installation work across five core technical trades:

    • Plumbing & Pipe Fitting
    • Masonry
    • Electrical Installation (Basic Maintenance)  Carpentry & Joinery
    • Welding & Fabrication

The programme emphasizes a “maintenance-first” approach, teaching trainees how to diagnose problems, carry out preventive maintenance, and perform corrective repairs on real infrastructure such as buildings, water systems, and community facilities. The instructor will deliver competency based, practical training, combining 1 hour of theory with 2 hours of hands-on application daily, ensuring that learning is immediately translated into real work situations. A key feature is implementing the “Real Responsibility Model”, where trainees take ownership of actual repair and maintenance tasks within RTRC and surrounding communities—building accountability, confidence, and job readiness. Beyond technical instruction, the instructor will serve as a mentor and role model, guiding trainees to develop:

    • Strong work ethic, discipline, and professionalism
    • Problem-solving and critical thinking skills  Teamwork and communication abilities
    • Basic financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills
    • The instructor will also support trainees to progress through NITA certification (Grades III, II, and I) while preparing them for employment, self-employment, or enterprise development.

     Key Responsibilities

    • Facilitate competency-based training across Masonry, Electrical Installation, Carpentry & Joinery, Welding & Fabrication, and Plumbing & Pipe Fitting, ensuring trainees develop both specialization and cross-trade competencies.
    •  Train trainees in preventive, corrective, and routine maintenance practices, emphasizing diagnosis, repair, and lifecycle management of community infrastructure.
    • Guide and oversee trainees in managing and maintaining real community assets (e.g., buildings, water systems, sanitation facilities), ensuring accountability and quality service delivery.
    • Deliver daily training sessions aligned to the 1-hour theory and 2-hour practical model, using real-life repair scenarios, simulations, and field-based assignments.
    • Evaluate trainees through continuous formative and summative assessments, including practical tasks, job cards, and portfolio development aligned with NITA standards.
    • Support trainees to successfully undertake NITA Grade III, II, and I trade tests through structured coaching, mock assessments, and competency reinforcement.
    • Instill discipline, teamwork, accountability, communication skills, and strong work ethics required for employment and self-reliance.
    •  Train and guide trainees in work order management, task prioritization, costing, material estimation, and efficient use of resources aligned with the 6Rs (Repair, Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Refurbish, Rethink).
    • Enforce occupational safety and health (OSH) standards, supervise quality assurance processes, and ensure all repair and maintenance work meets industry and regulatory requirements.
    • Keep accurate records of trainee progress, maintenance logbooks, job tracking systems, and contribute to ongoing improvement of the IRMP through feedback and innovation.

    Minimum Qualifications & Experience

    • Master Craft technician Part II (MCP II) (equivalent to Higher National Diploma) in a relevant trade.
    • CBET/TVETA proficiency or certification in Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) and participatory training methodologies is required.
    • NITA certification in at least one of the core trades.
    • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in repair, maintenance, or construction.
    • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple trades (at least 3 of the 5 listed)
    • Experience in training, mentorship, or apprenticeship supervision is an added advantage.

    Key Competencies

    • Multi-trade technical expertise across plumbing, masonry, electrical, carpentry, and welding.
    •  Advanced problem-solving and diagnostic skills in repair and maintenance work.
    • Application of industry standards in tools, materials, quality, and workmanship.

    • Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) delivery skills, including lesson planning
    • Participatory, learner-centered, and individualized training approaches.
    • Assessment and learner progress management, including continuous assessment and record keeping.
    • Coaching, mentorship, and trainee development, including employability skills and work ethic
    • Health, safety, quality, and environmental compliance in workshop and field settings
