    Medical Director

    ROLE PURPOSE

    • The Medical Director provides strategic clinical leadership across all medical services within the hospital. The role is responsible for guiding clinical governance frameworks, maintaining professional medical standards, and strengthening quality assurance and patient safety programmes.
    • The role also oversees medical staff credentialing and professional conduct, clinical audit programmes, and specialist engagement initiatives. Working closely with the executive leadership team, the Medical Director ensures that clinical operations remain aligned with the hospital’s strategic objectives while fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement in patient care.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES   

    Clinical Leadership and Medical Governance

    • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of all clinical services within the hospital.
    • Guide the development, implementation, and review of clinical protocols and treatment standards across departments.
    • Promote a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and ethical medical practice among consultants, specialists, and clinical teams.
    • Act as the primary liaison between medical staff and hospital leadership to support effective collaboration and decision making.

    Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

    • Oversee the implementation of hospital wide quality assurance programmes and clinical governance frameworks.
    • Lead clinical audit initiatives to monitor treatment outcomes and promote continuous improvement in patient care.
    • Support the development and implementation of evidence based clinical protocols and best practice guidelines.
    • Strengthen reporting and review mechanisms for clinical incidents, adverse events, and patient safety concerns.

    Medical Staff Credentialing and Professional Standards

    • Supervise the credentialing and privileging of consultants, specialists, and medical practitioners practising within the hospital.
    • Maintain robust governance procedures that uphold professional standards and regulatory compliance.
    • Support timely recruitment and onboarding of critical specialist capabilities to strengthen the hospital’s service offering.
    • Guide the development of visiting consultant programmes and specialist partnerships.

    Clinical Risk Management

    • Oversee the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of clinical risk across hospital departments.
    • Promote transparent reporting and structured review of clinical incidents to support learning and system improvement.
    • Ensure that appropriate policies and procedures are in place to safeguard patient safety and clinical quality.

    Specialist Services Development

    • Strengthen the hospital’s clinical capability through engagement with consultants and specialist practitioners.
    • Support the growth and development of specialised medical and surgical programmes that enhance the hospital’s service offering.
    • Work with leadership teams to identify opportunities for new service lines aligned with patient needs and healthcare trends.

    Surgical Programme Oversight

    • Collaborate with surgical teams to support the growth of surgical services and multidisciplinary clinical care.
    • Encourage improvements in theatre utilisation, surgical planning, and clinical coordination for complex procedures.
    • Promote structured review of surgical outcomes to support continuous clinical improvement.

    Governance and Regulatory Compliance

    • Ensure full compliance with national healthcare regulations and clinical governance frameworks.
    • Support preparation for regulatory inspections and accreditation processes.
    • Maintain adherence to medical staff bylaws, professional conduct standards, and institutional policies.

    Administration and Continuous Improvement

    • Prepare clinical performance reports and recommendations for executive leadership.
    • Maintain documentation of clinical governance structures, protocols, and credentialing processes.
    • Identify opportunities to strengthen clinical operations, quality frameworks, and specialist service delivery.
    • Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor in line with organisational objectives.

    Requirements

    Academic Qualifications

    • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or an equivalent medical qualification from a recognised institution.

    Professional Qualifications

    • Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
    • Postgraduate training in a recognised medical specialty is required.
    • Additional training in healthcare management, public health, or hospital administration will be an added advantage.

    Relevant Work Experience

    • Minimum of 10 years’ clinical experience within a hospital environment.
    • Demonstrated experience in senior clinical leadership or departmental leadership roles.
    • Experience overseeing clinical governance structures, quality assurance programmes, and specialist medical teams.
    • Exposure to hospital administration and collaboration with executive leadership teams.

    Technical & Professional Know-How

    • Strong understanding of clinical governance frameworks and hospital quality standards.
    • Knowledge of healthcare regulatory requirements and professional medical practice standards in Kenya.
    • Experience in clinical audit programmes, patient safety initiatives, and risk management frameworks.
    • Understanding of hospital operations including inpatient, outpatient, and surgical service delivery.

    Functional Skills

    • Strong leadership and decision making capability within complex clinical environments.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
    • Ability to guide multidisciplinary medical teams and specialist practitioners.
    • Strong analytical and problem solving capability in clinical and operational contexts.
    • High level of organisation and professional judgement in healthcare leadership.
