    Teacher

    Job Purpose Summary

    To undertake all aspects of teaching the AEP curriculum to learners, provide extra-curricular services and pastoral care, and to contribute to the running of the AEP centre, supporting other staff in the AEP team as required.

    Main Responsibilities:

    • Teach the AEP curriculum to learners, using child-centred, participatory methods, and positive classroom management practices.
    • Teach all subjects to primary learners (normally slightly over-age) in the alternative education programme (accelerated and catch-up classes) at primary level with the aim of returning learners to formal school or take the KCPE.
    • Provide pastoral care to learners.
    • Conduct teaching and provide pastoral care in a manner that promotes the social and emotional wellbeing of learners, ensuring an inclusive and gender-sensitive environment, and in particular the equal participation and performance of girls with boys.
    • Ensure that learners with disabilities are enrolled, welcomed into the classroom, and provided with appropriate, individualised support that ensures their meaningful participation in all activities.
    • Regularly mark learners’ work, including homework, providing constructive feedback and recording progress.
    • Engage in extra-curricular activities that promote the holistic development of learners.
    • Act as a liaison between the community and the AEP centre/NRC, taking part in informal and formal events, such as parents/carers’ evenings, as appropriate, and taking part in enrolment drives in the community.
    • Adhere to and promote NRC’s Child Safeguarding Policy in all interactions with children, identifying children at risk, and referring them to specialised services through the centre leader.
    • Serve as a model and mentor for less experienced teacher colleagues, conducting on-the-job mentoring of inexperienced teachers, including undertaking lesson planning and delivery together, giving demonstration lessons, observing lessons, and providing constructive, targeted feedback.
    • Take active part in discussions in the teaching team on the lesson content while referring to the curricula provided.
    • Document day-to-day progress which is to be used for the continual improvement of the programme.

    Other Responsibilities:

    • Deliver lessons and organise learning activity sessions in the subject of specialisation.
    • Provide remedial classes were necessary.
    • Together with the senior AEP teachers, prepare schemes of work and lesson plans.
    • Keep detailed and accurate records of students’ attendance, progress and assessment results, and follow up absences with parents/carers.
    • Prepare and administer entry assessments, continuous assessment tests and internal examinations to assess learners’ progress and knowledge assimilation.
    • Together with the senior AEP teachers, submit evaluations, attendance sheets and monthly reports to the centre leader.
    • Prepare and use teaching aids and materials in liaison with the senior AEP teachers.
    • Remain up-to-date on pedagogical methods and ensure a child-friendly environment where each child’s needs are identified and addressed, taking part in continuous professional development activities as required.
    • Monitor and support each learner and inform them of their progress.
    • Follow up the progress of AEP graduates once they transit to formal school.
    • Maintain good communications with parents/carers concerning the progress of their children.
    • Any other duties that may be given by the centre leader or project officer.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications, skills and experience required:

    Qualifications

    • Have five years of teaching experience in primary school.
    • Hold P1 certificate, ECD certificate /diploma with Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Number.
    • High level of personal integrity, cultural awareness and sensitivity and empathy for children.
    • High standard of English including oral skills and teaching English to speakers of other languages.

    Personal qualities

    • Experience in mentoring, with the ability to identify competency gaps and complement and assist teachers during lessons.
    • Basic individual counselling and conflict resolution skills.
    • Accuracy and precision in all work.
    • Goal-oriented, with ability to work under pressure and with limited supervision.
    • Ability to work and live in a generally insecure and harsh environment.
    • Excellent communication skills, flexible, readily adaptable to new challenges and approaches.
    • Knowledge and experience of special needs education and practice.
    • Firm, demonstrated commitment to gender equality.
    • Clear vision and creativity.
    • Flexibility, reliability and a team spirit.
    • Ability to work long hours and in challenging situations.

    We offer

    • Duty station: Dadaab
    • Duration of contract: 5 months up to 31st December 2022, renewable subject to availability of funds and performance.
