Background of the assignment
Makere Ghorei Farmers’ Cooperative Society Limited is a registered Cooperative Society under the Co-operative Societies Act cap 490 of the Republic of Kenya and is domiciled in Hola. The group was previously registered as a Community Based Organization (CBO) preceded by a Participatory Initiative for Community Development (PICD) facilitated by the Arid Lands Resource Management Project II [[1]]. The objective of the cooperative is to carry out irrigation activities on their 800-acre piece of land allocated to the community by the government. The main crops under irrigation are maize, cow peas, watermelons, onions, green grams and tomatoes. The CBO has a total membership of 250 with each farmer/member allocated 1-acre piece of land for Maize farming. The CBO is clustered into smaller sub county-based groups. The RDE supported the CBO in a KES. 18 Million projects implemented through CDTF under the Business Sector Programme Support II (BSPS II) whose objective was to increase access to markets for MSMEs in selected value chains. The RDE has since handed over the activities to Micro Enterprises Support Programme Trust (MESPT) who will oversee its implementation to conclusion. MESPT is spearheading and overseeing the management of this project, re-organizing and aligning the project and its management to a commercial enterprise in order to meet intended goals.
The rationale and objectives of the assignment
Agricultural biodiversity is recognized as a strategic ally in the struggle for greater resilience and adaptability in the face of climate change[2]. This means that employing diverse cropping patterns, judicious use of chemicals and fertilizers, integrated crop, soil and land use management are key components of crop production in the 21st century. IPM/ICM strategies greatly minimize vulnerability and resultant effects of drought, flooding, pests, diseases. Makere Ghorei’s most outstanding comparative advantage is its abundant agricultural land, i.e., 800 hectares of fertile Agricultural Utilisable Area. Both soft and structural reconvention are ongoing to orient crop production to a more market-oriented approach. Currently, the cooperative is farming on a 125-acre piece of land and has considerable scope for expanding the agricultural production to 800 acres. This cultivation and resultant crop growth-inducing factor(s) will inadvertently lead to an intensification of land use. As an emerging agricultural player, Makere Ghorei will have defiant role in agricultural trade (especially in the context of food scarcity and climate changes in Tana River). The challenge, therefore, is how to promote a socially acceptable, economic and environmentally conscious cropping system. This is possible by instituting a sustainable crop management system, rotating crops and sound farm management to preserve soil quality and biodiversity. This includes aspects of pre, during and post-harvest loss management.
Overall Objective of the Consultancy
The overall objective of this assignment is to capacity build the cooperative on Principles of Crop Production/Agronomy with a focus on Integrated Crop Management, Integrated Pest Management, Integrated soil fertility management, conservation agriculture practices and pre/post-harvest loss management.
