    Senior Consultant – Climate and Sustainable Finance

    Key Responsibilities

    Climate and Sustainable Finance Strategy and Advisory

    • Support clients to design and strengthen climate and sustainable finance strategies, financing frameworks, green investment approaches, and capital mobilisation roadmaps.
    • Contribute to the development of financing approaches for climate mitigation, adaptation, resilience, and broader sustainable development priorities.
    • Advise clients on financing mechanisms, institutional arrangements, governance models, and accountability approaches that improve the effectiveness, transparency, and impact of climate and sustainable finance.
    • Support alignment of financing strategies with national priorities, climate commitments, donor objectives, investor expectations, and sustainable development outcomes.
    • Support the identification of practical implementation pathways that translate strategic priorities into investable programmes and projects, including appropriate financing, delivery, and institutional arrangements.

    Blended Finance

    • Support the design of blended finance structures, investment vehicles, and capital mobilisation approaches that crowd in private capital alongside public and concessional funding.
    • Contribute to advisory assignments involving fund structuring, catalytic finance, guarantees, concessional financing, viability gap funding, and other de-risking instruments.
    • Support analysis of financing gaps, capital needs, fund design considerations, and investor participation models for climate and sustainable investment programmes and facilities.
    • Assist clients in identifying and assessing suitable financing partners, instruments, and structuring options for climate and sustainable investments.

    Project Preparation and Investment Readiness

    • Support Project Preparation Facilities (PPFs) and related initiatives aimed at developing bankable climate and sustainable investment projects.
    • Work with clients to identify, screen, and prioritise projects for preparation and financing support.
    • Contribute to the preparation of concept notes, investment briefs, financing cases, feasibility inputs, market assessments, and project preparation materials.
    • Support governments and other clients to strengthen project pipelines and move projects from early-stage concepts to investment-ready opportunities.
    • Contribute to assessments of project bankability, implementation pathways, financing structures, and capital mobilisation options.

    Results, Impact, and Accountability

    • Support the development of methods and systems for tracking, reporting, and validating the use and impact of climate and sustainable finance resources.
    • Contribute to results-based management, accountability, and transparency approaches that strengthen confidence among donors, investors, and beneficiaries.
    • Prepare technical reports, briefs, presentations, and client-facing outputs.
    • Contribute to impact measurement and verification approaches for climate- and sustainability-focused investments and programmes.
    • Document and share lessons learned, good practice, and market insights from climate and sustainable finance engagements.

    Business Development and Stakeholder Engagement

    • Support the growth of PwC’s climate and sustainable finance portfolio, including opportunity identification, client engagement, and development of concept notes, proposals, and presentations.
    • Support stakeholder mapping, engagement, and coordination across governments, development partners, INGOs, multilateral institutions, financial institutions, investors, and private sector actors.
    • Contribute to internal knowledge development and proposition building in climate finance, sustainable finance, blended finance, project preparation, and development finance.
    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across PwC offices within the East Market Area (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Zambia).

    Preferred Skills and Competencies

    • Practitioner experience in climate finance, sustainable finance, blended finance, development finance, or investment advisory.
    • Good understanding of climate finance and sustainable finance approaches, including blended finance, fund structuring, project preparation, and investment readiness.
    • Understanding of key financing mechanisms used to support climate action, including blended finance, concessional finance, climate funds, guarantees, results-based finance, sustainability-linked financing, green lending, viability gap funding, and other de-risking or catalytic instruments.
    • Understanding of the international climate finance architecture, including experience or familiarity with major climate finance mechanisms such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Adaptation Fund (AF), Global Environment Facility (GEF), Climate Investment Funds (CIF), and other multilateral or bilateral climate finance facilities, including their investment criteria, access modalities, fiduciary standards, safeguards, gender, and results requirements.
    • Experience supporting governments, development partners, INGOs, multilateral agencies, financial institutions, or private sector actors on climate finance, sustainable finance, or development finance assignments.
    • Ability to conduct economic, financial, market, and policy analysis and translate findings into practical recommendations.
    • Experience or exposure to ESG reporting, sustainability reporting, climate reporting, and impact reporting in line with donor, investor, or emerging standards.
    • Understanding of impact measurement, reporting, and verification for climate and sustainability-focused investments and programmes.
    • Familiarity with implementation models for sustainable investments, including infrastructure financing, project bankability assessment, and PPP frameworks where relevant.
    • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and policy-oriented environments.
    • Strong analytical, organisational, and project management skills.
    • Ability to work across multiple assignments, sectors, and teams in a dynamic consulting environment.

    Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Climate Finance, Sustainable Finance, Economics, Environmental Economics, Development Studies, Finance, Public Policy, or another related field.
    • Professional certification in finance, sustainable finance, climate finance, project finance, ESG, or related areas.

    Experience

    • A minimum of 3 years of relevant practitioner experience in climate finance, sustainable finance, development finance, project preparation, investment advisory, financial sector development, or related areas.
    • Demonstrated experience working with governments, development partners, INGOs, multilateral institutions, financial institutions, or climate-focused programmes.

    Proven experience in:

    • supporting or delivering climate finance and sustainable finance advisory assignments
    • contributing to blended finance, fund structuring, project preparation, or other implementation-oriented advisory work
    • supporting development of investment pipelines, financing strategies, or project preparation materials
    • conducting economic, financial, and policy analysis related to sustainable investment and financing
    • supporting tracking, reporting, or accountability mechanisms for climate and sustainable finance programmes or facilities
    • Financial modelling skills to assess project cash flows, financing scenarios, and investment considerations.
    • Exposure to sustainable finance taxonomies, ESG and sustainability reporting, MRV frameworks, climate finance tracking, or impact reporting.
