    Senior Consultant – Safety Leadership, Safety Culture, Safety Transformation (Mid-Senior Level)

    ERM is seeking a motivated Senior Safety Consultant to join its Operational Performance team. We are looking for candidates in South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania with strong health and safety experience to join our team to play a key role in our growing Safety Services Team. We are looking for focused and energetic professionals to bring their health and safety technical capabilities to help the worlds’ most dynamic companies in the tech, manufacturing, power, entertainment, chemical, and energy sectors tackle some of their most important safety challenges.

    Our clients are under increasing pressure to manage and improve their environmental, health & safety (‘EHS’) performance and reduce operational risk. Our Operational Performance team helps clients respond to these demands and we help clients turn EHS activities from a necessary cost to a value creator. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise in occupational health and safety (H&S or Safety), process safety, and related sustainability areas who enjoys working with clients and supporting consultant teams to deliver complex projects.     Responsibilities:

    • As a Senior Consultant joining our team, your key focus will be to support the successful delivery of ERM projects. Technically, the consultant should have experience in some or all of the following areas, for example:
    • With colleagues, design, develop and deploy programmes and initiatives to drive significant and sustainable transformations in EHS performance in both large scale organisations and in major capital projects
    • Co-develop fit-for-purpose, customised approaches to achieve both behavioural change on the frontline and significant and sustainable reductions in incidents and accidents
    • Provide in the field coaching for leaders, managers, supervisors and general operatives to help them to build their individual competencies, capacities and resilience.
    • Develop an understanding of how your work affects our clients’ business objectives and help them achieve these objectives.
    • Build client relationships and nurture repeat business by continuously striving to exceed their expectations.
    • Participate as an enthusiastic team member on project teams and effectively complete assignments.
    • Learn and grow as a safety professional through frequent internal and external training as well as exposure to interesting projects and advanced customer experiences.
    • Safety (H&S) auditing (due diligence, compliance, verification);
    • H&S management system management, compliance programme development and implementation;
    • Understanding of South African and broader African H&S legal requirements;

    As a Senior Consultant within the team, you will be responsible for:

    • Managing or coordinating small or medium size projects or whole elements of larger multidisciplinary or global projects – as ERM works closely with some of the world’s largest organisations, we anticipate that this role will require close collaboration with our European Safety & Risk teams as well as across our offices in Africa;
    • Delivering multiple project tasks or components, including proposals;
    • Supervising project team(s) and coaching and mentoring more junior staff;
    • Understanding the interrelationships between ERM services and policies and how these are applied within the clients’ business model;
    • Establishing strong working relationships with clients through project delivery;
    • Developing Safety Leadership & Safety Culture services in Africa
    • Client liaison, proposal preparation and review, project execution and management;
    • Client training and technical assistance;
    • Mentoring of junior staff; and
    • Adhering to ERM Southern Africa’s and Global Risk’s policies and procedures.
    • You will be part of our interdisciplinary and international team and will collaborate with ERM offices in the Europe, Middle East and Africa regions. Travel within South Africa and continental Africa will be required to fulfil on some of the above requirements.

    Requirements:

    • 5-10 years relevant experience in working with organizations on safety and risk management, leadership/culture, and/or sustainable EHS compliance
    • Be passionate about safety performance improvement and have substantial experience developing and delivering world-class EHS program solutions and supporting implementation
    • BS/MS degree preferred. Certification in field; CSP, CIH, PE, or similar registration highly desirable.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team setting, with guidance and direction
    • Ability to be adaptable, deal with ambiguity, and flexible to changing situations, able to think outside the box, and to identify and respond rapidly to safety issues in field locations.
    • Professionally attentive with business acumen and a desire for team collaboration.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, MS Office and analytical skills; experienced in writing technical reports.
    • Willingness to travel, both within South Africa and to international locations in support of client programs. Up to 50% travel may be required. Must have a valid passport.
    • Strong work ethic with a passion to learn and with an ability to work under pressure
