    Senior Legal Counsel

    About the job

    Moove is looking for an experienced, highly skilled and competent lawyer to be its Senior Legal Counsel to:

    • Ensure that we have an in-country legal resource with the primary responsibility of identifying, mitigating and managing legal risk in the Kenya and Uganda business & operations;
    • Provide legal advisory services and transactional support to the business and operations in Kenya and Uganda; and
    • Grow and deepen the capacity of the in-house Legal function.

    What You’ll be Doing

    • Draft, review and/or negotiate a wide variety of commercial agreements and contracts.
    • Provide legal and regulatory advice to other departments and business units within the organisation.
    • Be the first port of call for all regulatory and licensing issues relating to the business and operations in Kenya and Uganda.
    • Advise on the impact of specific Kenya and Uganda laws and regulations on Moove’s business and operations in Kenya and Uganda.
    • Monitor trends and developments in the legal and regulatory framework in Kenya and Uganda and work closely with Compliance and other business teams and senior stakeholders to ensure compliance.
    • Support local and global Product, Strategy, Operations and Management teams on launch of new products or business initiatives.
    • Draft and maintain internal policies to ensure compliance with Kenya and Uganda laws and regulations.
    • Liaise with and manage relationships with external counsel.
    • Provide training to other departments on legal and regulatory compliance.
    • Supervise and have line management responsibility for mid to junior level legal counsel as may be hired in Kenya and Uganda.
    • Keep Line Manager informed of key legal and regulatory risk issues affecting the business and operations in Kenya and Uganda.
    • Perform such other responsibilities as may be assigned by Line Manager.

    What You will need for this position

    • LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree.
    • Qualified to practice law in Kenya and/or Uganda
    • Minimum of 8 years post qualification experience
    • Strong corporate & commercial law experience in in-house legal team in the finance, fintech, consumer products or technology sectors.
    • Experience in a senior role leading and managing others.
    • Experience working in a rapid growth, scale-up business is desirable but not essential
    • Good judgement.
    • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and to take initiative.
    • Ability to work under pressure, effectively manage competing priorities and manage tasks proactively.
    • Ability to innovate and think creatively.
    • Strong interpersonal and team working skills.
    • Excellent stakeholder management skills and ability to deal with a range of internal and external stakeholders effectively.
    • High professionalism, self-driven and results-oriented.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills. (English).
    • Comfortable working in an unstructured ever changing environment
    • Adaptable and flexible
