Reporting to the University Librarian, the holder of this position will be responsible for planning, developing, expanding and maintaining both the digital repository and the archives and working collaboratively with Faculty, ICT, Administrators, Staff and Students and also peers in other institutions and organizations in developing a successful institutional repository and archives strategy for USIU-Africa.
Key Responsibilities
Administer and Manage the Digital Repository and Archives sections.
Develop and review policies and operational procedures and practices for the operation of the Archives and Digital Repository.
Plan for and arrange solutions for digital asset preservation to ensure that data and other digital assets remain accessible.
Spearhead the collection of documents for the repository by identifying resources that merit sustained access and require long term preservation.
Monitor developments in data standards and best practices and act as a liaison with national and international data organizations.
Maintain close engagement with related scholarly communication issues including copyright and open access and ensure legal obligations are met relating to creation and retention of paper and electronic records.
Provide tailored research data management and institutional repository awareness and training opportunities to the university community to foster the adoption of the repository as a scholarly communication tool.
Develop annual section budgets and reports that inform strategic and operational development.
Develop an advocacy program, create publicity materials, promote the digital repository both internally and externally and spearhead outreach programs.
Liaison between University and Database vendors to ensure federated search of resources in the OPAC.
Administer the Enterprise system and Dspace in liason with ICT department.
Linking recommended e-course text to their specific courses on blackboard.
Engage in professional development activities, including participation in conferences, workshops, and professional meetings to keep abreast with current trends etc, and
Mentor staff in the section to ensure continuity and coordinate the training and appraisal of work-study students, interns and students on attachment within the section.
Minimum Educational Qualifications and professional Experience
Masters Degree in Library and Information Sciences.
3 years relevant library experience, preferably in an academic setting.
Proficiency in computer applications.
Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
Personal Attributes & Competencies
Practical experience with relevant tools, protocols and standards such as DSpace, OJS, Fedora, MODs, MARC, etc.
Accuracy, neatness, and consistency.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and communication skills.
