    Supervisor – Legal Services

    Madison General Insurance Kenya Limited, a subsidiary of Madison Group and a leading provider of general insurance products throughout Kenya, is recruiting for the above position. Reporting to the Deputy Legal Manager, the Supervisor shall assist in the planning and execution of effective and efficient operational performance of the Legal Section in accordance with the company’s policies and practice.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Verification of cover on new claims and ensuring that policy conditions have been complied with and adequate reserves made;
    • Communication with insureds to get relevant claim documentation and give guidance on Court attendance;
    • Appointment of service providers to handle company matters and maintenance of a register for such appointments;
    • Liaising with external advocates and insureds to ensure that witnesses are availed during hearings and proper witness statements and documentation availed to external advocates at the point of filing defences;
    • Giving well researched opinions on the likely outcome of matters in court and on settlement parameters in case of negotiations;
    • Negotiating matters out of court and keeping registers of such matters;
    • Reviewing ongoing cases and advising the Deputy Legal Manager accordingly.
    • Liaising with relevant departments to ensure that where legal risks have been identified, appropriate courses of action have been taken.
    • Review and draft leases, contracts, agreements and internal policies and ensure that they are in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements.
    • Participate in the vetting of service providers.
    • Providing continuous leadership, supervision, training and development of the legal department staff to ensure an effective and motivated team.  
    • Assisting in maintenance of documentation and legal databases.
    • Ensuring payments are raised in good time, authorized and forwarded to Finance Department. Follow up on judgment payments to avoid executions;
    • Ensuring appeal instructions are given on time and appeal deposits made in good time;
    • Regular bring ups on all matters in Court to ensure they are updated;
    • Handling the Company’s recoveries from third parties and other insurance companies by instituting suits or out of Court negotiations and follow up thereof;
    • Giving Management opinions on changes in the law that would affect the Company ;
    • Attending Court as a witness for the Company;
    • Perusal of Court files to establish position of litigation;
    • Any other duties pertinent to the Legal Department.

    Minimum Requirements

    Qualifications and Competences

    • Bachelor of Laws Degree from a recognized institution;
    • Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law;
    • An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid Practicing Certificate;
    • A registered member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing;
    • A minimum of 4 years post admission working experience within the insurance sector; 
    • An eye for detail, strong organisational skills and able to take responsibility for own workload;
    • Demonstrated integrity and professional competence as reflected in work performance and results;
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills;
    • Strong team leadership skills;
    • Must be a team player.
