    Sustainable Fisheries Lead

    WWF is a leading voice for sustainable fisheries worldwide, working with policy makers, fisheries managers, fishing industry partners, retailers, local communities, research partners, international institutions and civil society organisations to drive improvements in fisheries management and governance. The Sustainable Fisheries Lead will be responsible for supporting coordinated and collective action on fisheries matters by national offices and regional programs across the WWF network.

    The successful candidate will work with colleagues across the Oceans Practice to plan, implement and evaluate high impact interventions to reduce overfishing, restore depleted fish populations, tackle illegal fishing, minimise by-catch, protect sensitive habitats and empower coastal communities.

    Main duties and responsibilities

    • Facilitate coordinated action on sustainable fisheries by the WWF network.
    • Provide leadership on strategy development, impact evaluation and network collaboration.
    • Communicate actively and effectively with the WWF network and external stakeholders.
    • Work with experts in the WWF network to develop and advocate for shared policy positions.
    • Convene and provide secretariat support for meetings of the Oceans Practice fisheries core team.
    • Provide expert technical advice and commission scientific and technical analyses as needed.
    • Work with WWF Global Tuna Lead to inform and influence regional fisheries management.
    • Work across WWF practices and disciplines to support an integrated approach to fisheries.
    • Building network capacity to influence fisheries management, policy and governance.
    • Manage budgets and support the development of strategic funding proposals as needed.

    Required Qualifications

    • University qualification(s) in fisheries management, marine conservation, law, political science, economics or related fields.
    • 7+ years of professional experience in fisheries management and/or marine conservation, including demonstrated experience in driving improvements in fisheries management.
    • Track record of success in fisheries management, marine conservation, policy advocacy, industry engagement, seafood markets, program development and/or strategic international partnerships.
    • Proven ability to lead and motivate international teams located across multiple locations.
    • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated success in fundraising.

    Required Skills and Competencies

    • Strategic thinker, communicator and motivator.
    • Excellent understanding of fisheries science, policy, governance and management.
    • Strong knowledge of marine conservation issues.
    • Good understanding of fisheries markets and trade.
    • Strong negotiating, lobbying and policy advocacy skills.
    • Fundraising experience with public, private and/or philanthropic donors.
    • Proven success in leading and motivating international teams.
    • Proven experience of working with different cultures.
    • Ability to work effectively in a matrix organisation.
    • Excellent command of English; other languages will be considered an asset.
    • Identifies with WWF values: Courage, Integrity, Respect and Collaboration.
    • Willingness to travel regularly and internationally.

    Working Relationships

    • Reports to hosting office with a technical (dotted) reporting line to the Oceans Practice Leader.
    • Liaise closely with Ocean Practice and Market Practice Core Teams and other relevant WWF teams (i.e. seafood, partnerships committee, etc).
