Each year, approximately 1 million visitors from around the world come to visit the United Nations. Designed by an international team of acclaimed architects (including Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer), the United Nations Headquarters was built on a site overlooking the East River. It quickly came to dominate the Manhattan skyline with the Secretariat’s “futuristic” (for the time) glass curtain wall and the sweeping roof of the General Assembly building.
