Duties and Responsibilities

• The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
• UNEP coordinates the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
• UN Environment’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental  management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
• UNEP administers the Nairobi Convention for the Protection,  Management and Development of the Coastal and Marine Environment of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). The Contracting Parties to the Convention are Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and United Republic of Tanzania. In support of its communications, outreach and visibility objectives, the Nairobi Convention Secretariat seeks a creative and motivated intern to contribute to the production of high-quality video and multimedia content.
• The internship will support storytelling, digital engagement and the visibility of regional marine and coastal initiatives, including major events and campaigns.
• This Internship position is located at the Nairobi Convention in the UNEP/Ecosystems Division office in Nairobi, Kenya, with the intended purpose of supporting the Convention’s programmes, projects, and reporting mechanisms of Contracting Parties.
• Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Nairobi Convention, the Intern will support the conceptualization, production, and dissemination of video and multimedia content highlighting marine and coastal issues across the Western Indian Ocean region.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Support the planning, research, scripting and storyboarding of video and multimedia content for campaigns, events and digital platforms;
• Film and edit video content, including interviews, event highlights, short documentaries, testimonials and human-interest stories;
• Produce short-form multimedia content tailored for digital and social media platforms, including Instagram, LinkedIn, X and Facebook;
• Edit and package multimedia materials by adding subtitles, graphics, transitions, sound design and other visual elements to enhance accessibility and audience engagement;
• Support the development of visual storytelling products that showcase programme results, project impacts, regional initiatives and partner engagement;
• Assist in producing communication and multimedia materials for key events, including the Twelfth Conference of Parties (COP12) and the Nairobi Convention’s 40th anniversary activities;
• Collaborate with technical and programme teams to translate scientific, environmental and policy content into clear, compelling and audience-friendly visual narratives;
• Support the organization, cataloging, and maintenance of video, photo and multimedia archives;
• Assist in uploading and updating website and other digital content with approved multimedia materials;
• Provide support to other communication, outreach, and visibility activities of the Secretariat, as required.

• Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); -
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent); or -
• Have graduated with a university degree in film production, multimedia, communications, journalism, digital media, media production, visual arts or a related field. In addition:
• Demonstrate pleasant interpersonal skills.
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
• Has a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and has a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of  internship that you are applying for is required.
• Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the Head of Multimedia, the Expert Multimedia Producer will perform the following duties:
• Conceive and develop original multimedia story concepts, treatments and production approaches for UNEP's priority campaigns and global events.
• Translate complex environmental and scientific issues into engaging, accessible and visually compelling multimedia stories for diverse global audiences.
• Executive produce complex multimedia projects from concept through to final delivery, ensuring high production values and strong editorial coherence.
• Direct filming in a range of international environments, including high-level interviews, documentary sequences, field reporting and pieces to camera.
• Apply advanced expertise in cinematography, lighting, audio recording and visual composition to produce broadcast-quality content.
• Edit long- and short-form video products, integrating graphics, animation, sound design and colour grading to maximise audience engagement across platforms.
• Develop immersive and innovative storytelling products for emerging platforms, including spatial video, digital-first formats and partner distribution channels.
• Produce platform-specific versions of multimedia content for broadcast, web, social media and third-party media partners.
• Exercise independent editorial judgement to identify compelling stories, visual opportunities and creative approaches during field assignments.
• Collaborate closely with programme specialists, scientists, communications officers and external partners to ensure factual accuracy while maintaining strong storytelling.
• Apply innovative production techniques and emerging technologies to expand the reach and impact of UNEP's multimedia content.
• Ensure all multimedia outputs meet UNEP's editorial, branding, accessibility and technical standards.
• Deliver complete production packages, including edited masters, project files, captions, transcripts and metadata suitable for archive and future reuse.
• Work independently on complex assignments, often under tight deadlines and in demanding operational environments, while maintaining consistently high creative and technical standards.

Qualifications/special skills

Management

• An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in media management, video production, communications, or related field is required.
• A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
• At least seven years of experience working in multimedia production, film making and/or video for high-quality platforms.
• Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, and other Creative Suite software is required Familiarity with 360 films and short-form video productions for social media use. Prior experience in the international arena, familiarity with the work of the UN is requried Prior experience shooting video and still photography on DSLR cameras and audio recording experience is desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

Management

• Analyze existing ICT, digital transformation, digital platform governance, and related policy and regulatory frameworks relevant to sustainable digital transformation and green technology adoption.
• Conduct a comprehensive assessment of these policies and frameworks to determine their alignment with sustainability principles, including environmental sustainability, climate considerations, energy efficiency, circularity and e-waste management, human rights protection, digital inclusion, accessibility, and gender responsiveness.
• Assess the extent to which existing frameworks address sustainability considerations across the life cycle of digital technologies and infrastructure, including the design, deployment, operation, use, and disposal of ICT systems and digital solutions.
• Identify policy gaps, opportunities, implementation challenges, and institutional barriers within the current policy and regulatory environment, particularly in relation to sustainable digital governance, digital platform governance, responsible technology deployment, and green ICT practices.
• Develop actionable policy recommendations and green technology incentive mechanisms to strengthen the integration of sustainability principles within ICT governance and digital transformation initiatives.
• Propose practical measures to support environmentally sustainable, inclusive, and resilient digital transformation, including recommendations related to green digital infrastructure, sustainable procurement, innovation incentives, energy-efficient technologies, and responsible digital practices.
• Deliver a validated policy review and recommendations report that will inform future policy development, strengthen Kenya’s sustainable digital governance ecosystem, and support the country’s transition towards a more inclusive and environmentally sustainable digital economy

Qualifications/special skills

Business Operations

• Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Public Policy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Digital Transformation, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, Governance, Law, or a related field. A minimum of 10 (ten) years of relevant experience in policy analysis, digital transformation, ICT governance, or sustainability-related initiatives, preferably within national, regional, or international contexts is required.
• Proven experience in multi-stakeholder engagement, including collaboration with government institutions, development partners, private sector, and civil society is required.
• Policy and regulatory frameworks review, gap analyses, and actionable policy recommendations development, particularly in areas related to digital platforms, environmental sustainability, and governance is required.
• Familiarity with Kenya’s digital policy landscape and global frameworks on sustainable digital transformation is highly desirable.
• Experience working with the UN system or international development organizations is desirable.
• Integrating sustainability, human rights, and gender-responsive principles into policy and programme design is desirable.

Languages

• English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this assignment, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.

 The Individual Contractor will undertake the following duties:

• Monitor budgetary commitments, including verification of charges and obligation documents in UMOJA for all financial transactions and evaluates trends of financial implementation and makes necessary recommendations to Task Manager.
• Review, appraise and revise, as necessary, all submissions for substantive programmes projects, ensuring compliance with guidelines and programme / project objectives; identifies problems / issues, seek clarification from departments, assess replies, and prepares a summary for the manager with suggestions for further action.

Qualifications/special skills

Management

Academic:

• Advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: Administration, Accounts,  finance or related field is desirable is required;
• A first level degree with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
• Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA) or Equivalent is required
• Certification in Microsoft Data Analysis is required.
• Certification in Advanced Financial modelling is required.
• Minimum five years of experience in experience in Project Administration,  Finance and Budgeting is required;
• Experience in information management, database systems and use of power BI is required.
• Experience working with Enterprise Resource Platform (ERP) such as Systems Applications and Products (SAP) specifically on Grantor and Fund Management Modules and Business Intelligence (BI) reporting is required.
• Experience in budget planning, analysis and monitoring is required
• Experience working with GEF projects is required;
• A minimum of one (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
