    News & Media Desk Consultant

    This position is located in the Digital Strategy Section in the Communications Division. The incumbent will be under the direct supervision of the Head of News & Media.

    Under the direct supervision of the Head of News & Media, the consultant will:

    • Strategy implementation: Ensure timely implementation of activities related to the media strategy to publicize priority issues and/or major events related to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and UNEP’s work on climate action, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up actions, and analyzing the outcome; Ensure effective design and delivery of communication products; Undertake activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a media strategy and action plan, initiating proactive media outreach efforts.
    • Capacity building: Build information networks by interacting with journalists, other media representatives and followers, subscribers, and supporters of media networks; Develop and sustain partnerships with internal and external partners for successful development and execution of UNEP’s news media strategy; Monitor media, analyze information and prepare reports in order to ensure outreach, engagement and growth of media coverage.
    • Content creation: Produce and oversee production of media-orientated communication products (editorial writing, news writing, proofing, pitching, placement, etc.). Recommend appropriate information and communication materials for use in media and other communication activities; Participate in selecting the news and media related information transmitted to key constituencies; Maintain and update online media relations contact list/database; Ensure rapid and accurate information dissemination to the media; Act as a News desk Officer for the Unit.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication, public relations or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive work experience in media relations, a digital newsroom, editorial production or journalism, some of which at the international level, is required.
    • Experience in the development and execution of an earned media strategy entailing complex research and story innovation is desirable.

    Languages

    • English and French are the working knowledge of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is an advantage.

    Human Rights and Conservation Expert

    • UNEP has been working on human rights and the environment for almost two decades and engages with Members States and other actors to promote, protect and respect human rights including the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

    UNEP wishes to engage the services of a consultant to:

    • Assist UNEP to organize meetings and consultations in 2024 in polishing the draft human rights principles for conservation funding, including identifying key stakeholders and drafting background documents for these events.
    • Update and revise the draft human rights principles for conservation funding incorporating feedback including from the ICCA Consortium, conservation organizations as well as conservation funders.
    • Develop political strategies aimed at the endorsement of the human rights principles for conservation funding by conservation organizations, conservation funders as well as Indigenous Peoples organizations and other rights holder groups.
    • Develop an options paper for a forum on human rights and conservation.
    • Review and advise UNEP on policies, papers, and publications related to human rights and the environment.
    • The consultant will work under the supervision of the Legal Officer of Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit, Law Division.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • An advanced level law degree from a university or institution of equivalent status with specialization in environmental and human rights related field, including natural resources management, environmental assessment, environmental policy, or law is required.
    • A minimum of fifteen years of experience working on the intersection between human rights law and environmental law.
    • Prior experience working on conservation and human rights, procedural rights, intergovernmental bodies, international organizations, including United Nations agencies; Engaging effective communications with diverse organizations and audiences interacting and coordinating large networks/groups; Prior experience in stakeholder and partnership engagement and experience in analyzing information and drafting recommendations, are required.

    SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

    • Direct working experience in environmental law or environmental policy.
    • Excellent writing and communications skills.
    • Excellent research and analytical skills, in particular in legal analysis, and expertise in independent research and review.
    • Results focused.
    • Clear and concise communication.

    Scoping Specialist - Consultant

    Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Biodiversity People and Landscapes Unit, with direct oversight by the Programme manager within the Biodiversity, People and Landscapes Unit, the consultant will undertake a scoping study to produce a State of Knowledge Report in Latin America and the Caribbean for the WBDE. The Scoping Specialist is expected to:

    • Define a framework for the report.
    • Conduct a literature review of all WBDE related activities (recognizing that these activities may be done under different names in different countries / regions) to gather data and source relevant materials.
    • Identify relevant case studies from across the region to illustrate the state of the WBDE in the region, including diversity in terms of geographic location, biomes, WBDE activities, policies and socio-economic context.
    • Define a framework, table of contents and scope of the state of knowledge report that covers the main aspects to be covered in the context study.
    • Conduct comprehensive desk research to global WBDE landscape in the selected region, adhering to the pre-defined framework and scope.
    • Provide an overview of the character and status of the WBDE and different terms used to describe it in the region, as appropriate (for example the types of WBDE initiatives that exist including animal-based activities such as hunting, wild animal farming, plant-based activities such as forestry, Non-Wood Forest Products, landscape-based activities including tourism)1.(Please refer to the ALU report on Status of Wildlife Economy in Africa for guidance)
    • Provide an overview of the policy, regulatory and legal framework governing the WBDE, incorporating insightful case studies from selected countries.
    • Identify country-specific gaps pertaining to various types of WBDE activities and practices, as relevant.
    • Identify opportunities to promote the update of the WBDE in the region.
    • Highlight good practices with relevance to the selected region, incorporating case studies and lessons learned.
    • Obtain facts and statistics rooted in science and knowledge that can enable informed decision-making on the WBDE, monitoring progress, and that can provide guidance for the successful implementation of the WBDE.
    • Identify the primary stakeholders engaged in activities related to the WBDE, as well as any related terms, within the region.
    • Produce a regional scoping report summarizing findings from above.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • An advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international relations, economics, political science, international development or another relevant technical field from a recognized institutions is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • A minimum of 7 years of work experience in international development, strategy, Environment, advocacy, partnership is required.  
    • Experience working in the environment field is highly desirable.
    • Experience working for a UN agency is an asset.
    • Demonstrated experience in design, management and execution of projects, including desk research and delivery of recommendations is an asset.
    • Experience in operating independently and in providing expert advice and support on partnerships is an asset.

    Specific Skills:
