    Resident Veterinarian

    JOB PURPOSE:

    The ideal candidate should be proficient in diagnosing, treating, and managing the health needs of livestock, specifically goats, sheep, and cattle. As a crucial member of the team, the individual will play a key role in maintaining the health and productivity of their animals, contributing to the success of their farming operations.

    ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Perform thorough examinations, diagnose illnesses, and administer treatments for goats, sheep, and cows, ensuring the best possible care for all livestock.
    • Conduct and interpret diagnostic tests, including blood work and ultrasound, to identify and address health issues accurately.
    • Implement vaccination programs, parasite control measures, and regular health checks to prevent diseases and promote overall herd wellness.
    • Provide guidance and advice to farm staff on best practices for animal health management, including nutrition, breeding, and routine care.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all medical treatments, vaccinations, and health assessments, ensuring compliance with veterinary and agricultural standards.
    • Respond swiftly to urgent cases, providing critical care during emergencies, including difficult births, injuries, and severe illnesses.
    • Work closely with farm management and support staff to ensure the smooth functioning of daily operations and uphold high standards of animal care.

    EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school.
    • Valid veterinary license to practice in Kenya.
    • Previous experience in treating livestock, especially ruminants such as goats, sheep, and cattle, is highly preferred. New graduates with a strong interest in livestock care are also welcome to apply.
    • Proficient in diagnostics, excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication with farm staff, and familiarity with veterinary record-keeping software.
    • Ability to handle large livestock, including lifting, restraining, and working in outdoor farm conditions for extended periods.

    Assistant Farm Manager

    The ideal candidate should have strong expertise in livestock management, breeding programs, and farm operations, as well as excellent leadership and organizational skills.

    ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Livestock Management:

    • Oversee the care, feeding, health, and general well-being of sheep and goats on the farm.
    • Develop and implement breeding programs to improve productivity and genetic quality.
    • Monitor and manage animal health, including vaccinations, parasite control, and disease prevention.
    • Maintain accurate records of livestock, including breeding, health, and production data.

    Farm Operations:

    • Manage daily farm operations, including feeding schedules, grazing plans, and water supply.
    • Supervise and train farm staff to ensure efficient performance and adherence to farm protocols.
    • Ensure compliance with animal welfare standards and relevant legal regulations.

    Pasture and Feed Management:

    • Plan and manage pasture rotation to optimize grazing and reduce overgrazing.
    • Oversee the procurement, storage, and usage of feed, supplements, and other supplies.

    Financial and Administrative Duties:

    • Prepare and manage farm budgets, including tracking expenses and revenues.
    • Generate reports on farm productivity, animal health, and breeding performance.
    • Coordinate with suppliers, veterinarians, and other service providers.

    Infrastructure and Equipment Management:

    • Ensure proper maintenance and repair of farm infrastructure, fencing, and equipment.
    • Plan and implement farm improvements as needed to enhance productivity.

    Sustainability and Innovation:

    • Implement sustainable farming practices to improve productivity and reduce environmental impact.
    • Stay updated on the latest advancements in livestock breeding and farm management techniques.

    EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree in animal science, livestock production, agriculture, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 3–5 years’ proven experience in livestock farm management, preferably with sheep and goat breeding programs.
    • Demonstrated success in animal health management, breeding practices, and record-keeping for livestock productivity.
    • Hands-on experience in supervising farm staff and managing daily farm operations.
    • Proficient in livestock health monitoring, vaccinations, parasite control, and disease prevention.
    • Knowledge of pasture management, rotational grazing systems, and feed supplementation.
    • Competence in preparing and managing farm budgets, expense tracking, and productivity reporting.
    • Familiarity with modern breeding techniques, genetic improvement strategies, and sustainable farm practices.
    • Strong supervisory skills with the ability to train, motivate, and manage farm workers effectively.
    • Proven ability to coordinate with veterinarians, suppliers, and service providers.
    • Skilled in infrastructure and equipment management, including fencing, water systems, and farm facilities.

    Quantitative Field Interviewers

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • The research assistants will undertake the following duties and responsibilities.
    • Commit to attend all days of training and data collection.
    • Obtain and document informed consent from the study participants before the interviews.
    • Conduct and record all interviews held with respondents using digital recorders.
    • Participate in daily debrief meetings.
    • Be a custodian of the APHRC data collection equipment during field work.
    • Observe safeguarding procedures throughout the data engagement.
    • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Diploma / Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Education, or related disciplines within the social sciences.
    • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, with a minimum grade of C plain.
    • Experience in electronic data capture methods like survey CTO and devices like electronic digital recorders.
    • Attention to detail to ensure the correctness of all data entered.
    • Resident of Turkana, Fluency in English and Swahili as well as local language written and spoken proficiency as an added advantage.
    • Be available to work full-time on the project for the duration of the study
