    Project Officer, Schools2030 (Coast)

    About Schools2030

    AKF, in partnership with a global consortium of private foundations, is co-launching Schools2030, a 10-year (2020-2030) learning improvement programme. Schools2030 will partner with national governments and 1000 school sites (pre-primary, primary, secondary, and youth education providers) across 10 countries from around the world to develop understanding and evidence of ‘what works’ in equipping children and young people with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to successfully navigate uncertainty and become contributing members of society. In Kenya, AKF will partner with 100 school sites to drive classroom level innovation to enable teacher generated solutions to identify and inform ‘what works in education’ for Coast.

    Purpose of the position

    AKF is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated individual to lead the direct delivery of Schools2030 activities in Coast. Working under the direct supervision of the Schools2030 Coordinator, the Project Officers will be responsible for the direct delivery and support to schools, contributing to developing positive partnerships with government and non-government stakeholders, and effectively communicating Schools2030. This role will demand the person to work within a dynamic, fast-paced environment and work closely with the Regional Education and ECD Advisor and other Schools2030 team members in the region to ensure the timely, quality implementation of all Schools2030 activities.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Lead the direct delivery of all Schools2030 activities at the district level with partner schools and youth partners. A core deliverable will be implementing a Human Centred Design processes with all partner schools, including workshops, school-based support, school network support, and effective use of flexible innovation response funds;
    • Ensure all aspects of the project cycle are delivered with quality and contribute to the development of workplans, budgets, and activity and narrative reports;
    • Provide project information and feedback to communicate progress, challenges, learning, and upcoming priorities and workplans to the Schools2030 Coordinator;
    • Ensure all project funds you are responsible for are fully accounted for and liquidation is done in a timely manner to enable timely reporting;
    • Ensure all project delivery and processes comply and promote with AKF’s gender and social inclusion and child and community safeguarding policies;
    • Be the main point of contact for schools2030 at the district level;
    • Engage and coordinate principle partners and stakeholders at district level to ensure collaborative delivery of project activities;
    • Work with education actors to strengthen the education ecosystem connections and networks at the district level;
    • Lead on the effective collection and management of data at the school and District level
    • Ensure project learning is effectively communicated through the internal and external feedback loops and that principle partners have access to and understand the learning;
    • Effectively engage in internal AKF learning opportunities to develop professional and technical understanding of education and Human Centred Design.

    Key Qualifications and Experience

    • BA in Education, Sociology, Business Administration or related field;
    • Proven experience of working in social programming with a minimum of 3 years relevant experience working in education programming and international development;
    • Experience collaborating with government and non-government partners as well as schools, children, teachers and young people;
    • Strong understanding of the Kenyan education system and emerging technologies in the education and development sector;
    • Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation frameworks for education programmes with experience in data collection methods;
    • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills;
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders;
    • Ability to work independently and under pressure;
    • Proficient in ICT and Microsoft software.

    ToR - Organizational Strengthening Consultancy – YETU Initiative

    GOAL/Purpose

    The Yetu initiative seeks services from Kenya-based consultants to provide organizational strengthening technical assistance to the county based local development organizations (LDOs) to strengthen locally led sustainable development priorities.

    Yetu is seeking to build a pool of local consultants (both individuals and consultancy firms), who will be screened and preapproved to deliver the services in a range of geographies within Kenya. Respondents are not required to demonstrate coverage across all geographies; rather, more localized consultants with specific geographic expertise and language skills are welcome to respond. Pre-qualified applicants that are pre-selected will undergo an approval process and be included in a database to be considered for engagement on relevant consulting assignments. Note that, there will be additional process before any work is awarded to the consultants.

    The following are the potential technical and functional areas:

    • Organizational development and change management
    • Community Engagement
    • Strategic Communication
    • Knowledge management
    • Resource mobilization
    • Sustainability models such as social enterprise, Membership, endowments, payment for results, social bonds
    • Monitoring evaluation learning and reporting methodologies such as outcome harvesting, most significant change, collaborative learning and adaptation
    • Gender and youth engagement

    EXPECTED RESULTS (OUTPUTS)

    The expected results from this consultancy is to enhance LDOs capacities and performance to be effective in their mandate.

    PROCESS/TASKS/SCOPE OF SERVICES

    The consultant will need to undertake the following tasks in order to achieve the above-mentioned objectives:

    • Review various LDOs documents to design a appropriate methodology that is aligned to the its strategic priorities.
    • Develop a methodology of undertaking the assignment for review and approval by AKF.
    • Provide the technical assistance as agreed by both the LDO and AKF.
    • Prepare a report of the technical assistance provided.
    • The above tasks are illustrative and the consultant will be expected to build on these as needed in order to ensure the assignment is completed to the expected standards. He/she is encouraged to consult regularly with AKF for any clarification or assistance to further inform the products from this assignment.

    SUPERVISION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

    The Consultant will be supervised by Yetu Program Director.

    PERIOD OF CONSULTANCY

    • Each consultancy awarded will be expected to take a total of ten days per county, however, this may vary based on the needs.

    • All deliberations relating to this consultancy, including all information collected from various meetings/documents shall be kept confidential and shall not be divulged to any third party either verbally or in writing or in any other form.

    APPLICANT SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

    The Consultant should have the following educational qualifications, skills and experience:

    • A minimum of 8 years’ consultancy experience in the respective area of expertise.
    • Experience in working with civil society, government and non-governmental institutions.
    • Experience in mentoring nascent organizations.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent facilitation and training skills.
    • Excellent report writing skills.
    • Excellent oral presentation skills.

    Preferred Requirements: Kenyan nationals highly preferred. Fluent Kiswahili highly desired. Professional training in the respective area of expertise is an advantage

    lOGISTICS AND PROCEDURES

    The Consultant will be responsible for covering his/her transport costs for any travel required to meet with AKF staff within Nairobi. If the consultant requires office space from where to work, the same can be arranged with AKF to allocate space. AKF will support with printing and communication (email, telephone, and fax) costs where these arise during the assignment.

    Yetu Initiative - Institutional Strengthening Coach

    Position Summary:

    The institutional strengthening coach will provide and manage capacity strengthening support of LDOs at the counties. He/ She will report to Organization and System Strengthening specialist.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide and manage capacity strengthening support to the LDOs
    • Work with the organization and system design specialist to strengthen engagements and positioning of county LDOs to effectively engage government, private sector, and other civil society actors in county development agenda
    • Coordinate county level review meeting and learning events to enanble sharing of successful practices, collective problem solving and decision making for sustainable county development.
    • Provide support in building county level relationships with relevant stakeholders such as community leaders, government, private sector to engage them on county level development issues
    • Facilitate close collaboration with other county level projects and USAID organization development partner to position LDOs and CSOs to deliver on their mandate
    • Provide support to the initiative to articulate lessons learnt, challenges, and risks emerging from the initiative; and feedback into the planning and implementation processes
    • Provide support in work planning and reporting processes respectively, and submission to the donor
    • Support the development and maintenance of an M&E framework and system for the iniative ensuring synergies between M&E, program, and finance
    • Provide support to ensure the capacity strengthening initiative has a visible profile within and beyond the counties

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in international development, organisational development, business, or related field;
    • At least 3 years’ experience with designing and implementing organizational and systems strengthening initiatives, ideally at the county-level in Kenya;
    • Advanced skills in facilitation, human centred design, systems thinking, consulting, coaching, program development and management;
    • Exceptional written and oral English communication skills. Ability to work in Kiswahili is an advantage;
    • Knowledge of and prior experience working on USAID-funded will be an added advantage;
