    Psychologist - Dagahaley Camp

    Work Location: Dagahaley Refugee Camp,  Kenya

    Start date: As Soon As Possible.

    MSF is a humanitarian medical organization providing emergency medical aid to populations in need.

    MSF is launching the recruitment of a Psychologist for a temporary replacement for the activities in Dagahaley.

    The selected candidate will be reporting to the e Mental Health Supervisor.

    Main Purpose

    Providing psychological support to patients according to MSF principles, standards and procedures in order to improve the patients’ mental health.

    Accountabilities

    • Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. Informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient's condition
    • Implementing the Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol, identifying possible victims of SGBV and referring them to the medical team so that they receive the necessary treatment.
    • Providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family, group) to patients according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions
    • Assisting and training staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities. Working in close collaboration with translators in order to ensure appropriate terminology and behaviour during sessions
    • Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities
    • Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective
    • Ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential.

    Context Specific Accountabilities

    • The Mental Health Department is located within the 100-bed capacity Dagahaley Hospital that serves a catchment population of approximately 92,000 which includes the refugee population in Dagahaley and the other camps, the local non-refugee population, the mother Garissa county, and the neighbouring, Wajir South and Wajir counties- not forgetting Somali nationals who access the camp for medical reasons from across the border.
    • The mental health department forms the vanguard of the primary health intervention for patients with mental health conditions at both in-patient and out-patient settings.
    • The psychologist and Mental health officers and ther supervisor work in close collaboration with the two health posts to ensure patients with mental health conditions are identified and access care in the Mental Health Department.
    • The Psychologist has a responsibility to play in the community in terms of mental health promotion, sensitization and empowering the community health workers to identify cases and refer them to hospital for further care.
    • The Psychologist also works under direction of their supervisor to facilitate seamless communications in terms of meeting attendance and patient referrals with partner agencies to ensure best-possible care is offered to the patients.
    • The psychologist also plays a role under the COVID-19 pandemic response to provide psychotherapy and counselling services to patients and caretakers and also affected MSF staff, upon request.
    • The Mental health officers have an active role in community sensitization and awareness - specifically tailored to address misperceptions about mental health, substance abuse and stigmatization of perceived mental health sufferers.

    Requirements

    Education:    

    Essential degree or diploma in Psychology

    Experience:    

    • Essential 2 years’ experience minimum as a Psychologist
    • Desirable previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s in developing countries

    Languages    

    Mission language (English) essential and local language (Somali) desirable.

    Knowledge    

    Desirable computer literacy (Word, Excel and Internet)

    Laboratory Technician - Dagahaley Camp (Locum pool)

    Work Location: Dagahaley Refugee Camp,  Kenya

    We are launching locum pool recruitment for activities in Dagahaley Refugee Camp.

    The selected candidate will be reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor.

    Main Purpose

    Perform clinical laboratory activities according to MSF protocols, security and hygiene measures in order to obtain results to determine the patient’s treatment.

    Accountabilities

    According to medical prescription, preparing and performing clinical exams/tests with appropriate techniques and following MSF protocols and procedures. This function includes, among others:

    • Taking blood, vaginal and urethral samples.
    • Centrifuging blood and urine samples.
    • Performing laboratory exams (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology or parasitological, according to context of the mission).
    • Ensuring proper reporting and registration of the sample results,keep a written track of activity and give information to the relevant persons, ensuring confidentiality.
    • Taking care, manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment:
    •  Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning
    • Applying hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing general glassware after procedures are done.
    • Ensuring proper sample waste disposal according to MSF protocols and highest safety standards.
    • Supplying orders, do stock, storage conditions follow-up, keep inventory.
    • Keeping organized the data collection system of laboratory results and all information generated from the analysis done.
    • Reporting all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the line manager, especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or medicines.
    • Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.

    Context Specific Accountabilities

    • Implement MSF rules and regulations.
    • Respect the universal hygiene standards and follow the disposal guidelines.
    • Disinfect the working benches/tables before and after work according to the MSF protocol.
    • Do proper and optimal waste segregation to reduce accidents and ensure safety in the department.
    • Place order (weekly/monthly) for reagents and materials based on consumption with the support of the direct supervisor.
    • Keep record of all investigations done: that is, the patients’ names, age, address/block, date, diagnosis, requester and result of the investigation(s) done.
    • Ensure that results are dispatched according to the departmental units in a timely manner.
    • Be able to prepare, stain and examine TB smears, peripheral blood film, gram’s staining and Indian Ink staining.
    • Report problems and other relevant information related to patient services to the supervisor in a timely manner.
    • Chart the fridges in the morning and evening and monitor the coldchain.
    • Dust the microscope and the haematology machine, clean the hemoCue 301 machine according to the SOPs.
    • Do blood grouping for expectant mothers sent from ANC and record the rusults correctly.
    • Facilitate the transfer of samples to other centres in coordination with the lab supervisor and/or the HD.
    • Do pre and post counseling, grouping, screening and bleeding of blood donors. Give them appropriate care.
    • Do investigations in the departments/units/wards if required.
    • Perform tests without any unnecessary delay.
    • In the absence of the lab supervisor, supervise the auxiliary laboratory assistants and allocation of duties pertaining to laboratory work. Keep communication with the Hospital Director (HD).
    • Generate daily, weekly and monthly reports/data from the activities of the department.
    • Facilitate any needs relating to epidemic surveillance.
    • Run quality controls for machines used in the lab and other departments – glucometers and hemoCue 301.
    • Perform training or refreshment for auxiliary laboratory assistants when needed.
    • Apply personal protective measures while working in the lab; this includes MSF recommended scrubs/tunic trousers.
    • Ensure that quality control tests are carried out regularly or as required by SOPS/MSF.
    • Observe punctuality and work in the lab. at odd hours if required by the supervisor/MSF.
    • Implementing MSF security policy guidelines.

    Requirements

    • Education:    Essential Laboratory Technician diploma/degree.
    • Experience:    Minimum 1 year working experience essential.

    Nurse - Dagahaley Camp (Locum pool)

    The selected candidate will be reporting to the Nursing Team Supervisor.

    Main Purpose

    • Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
    • Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
    •  Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
    • Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary • Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
    • Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
    • Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed .
    • Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
    • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance of biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
    • Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

    Context Specific Accountabilities

    • Participate in the hospital platforms, departmental meetings, quality control activities like death audits, case reviews, prescription audits etc.
    • Ensure the registration of day to day consumption according as per procedure in place including proper cold chain management and maintenance in the department.
    •  EPREP team member: Assist in response to emergencies within the project or as required.
    • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

    Requirements

    • Education:    Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma
    • Experience:    Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO’s
