    Assignment News Editor

    OVERALL PURPOSE:

    Reporting to the Supervising News Editor the job holder will be responsible for coordinating news gathering operations as well as producing various news and current affairs shows for the company.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Leading editorial meetings.
    • Supervising ENG Reporters and assigning stories ENG Reporters.
    • Vetting pitches, improving on story ideas. Improving ENG Reporters scripts and deliverables.
    • Securing interviews that promote the news product
    • Editing scripts (format adherence, fact checking, redundancy etc.) and ensuring they meet the house style.
    • Quality control of news productions. Watching produced clips/documentaries/features/shows and ensuring house style is met.
    • Creating a news roster of deliverables and dates. Ensuring deadlines are adhered to.
    • Reviewing performance of ENG Reporters. Leading pre-production and post-production with assigned crew i.e. ENG Reporters and Cameraman.
    • Monitor news feeds and create a vibrant news/features docket. 
    • Develop original content including news shows that build channel viewership
    • Ensure timely delivery of bulletin/editorial content by anchor/host(s)
    • Any other duty as may be assigned by the Head of  Department

    EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCES

    • University Degree in Journalism or a relevant field from a recognized institution
    • Three (3) years relevant experience in a busy news environment, preferably a television station.
    • Impeccable command of English and Kiswahili
    • Ability to work long odd hours
    • Excellent Editing skills
    • People management skills.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills
    • Understanding of Media Laws & Ethics

    Multimedia Journalist

    OVERALL PURPOSE:

    Reporting to the news editor the incumbent of this role will gather information, write stories, make broadcasts and use social media to keep the public informed about current affairs and events that are happening in the world.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Use the latest editing and photography technology to tell compelling stories. Develop story ideas; write, shoot and edit news stories for on-air broadcasting; use graphics and new forms of media, such as webcam interviews and viewer-contributed pictures.
    • Deliver on-air news in an accurate manner while still making the events exciting to hear about. Ensure high editorial standards are met and responsible for the clear and engaging reporting or presentation of the daily and/or weekly programme.
    • Responsible for all aspects of Business output including the production and presentation of live and recorded content, reporting, presenting, script-writing, packaging, translating, and compiling TV Bulletins. 
    • Ensure versatility with proven journalistic skills or equivalent experience, good on-screen presence and broadcast voice, energy, creativity, flexibility and an in-depth understanding of the news, politics, culture and social issues relevant to an African audience.
    • Creating digital video for our website and social platforms, and writing for our website to promote our content and engage with our audiences.
    • Compile and output innovative news programmes and content offering new perspectives and deeper exploration to news stories, interviews, profiles and digital content.
    • Creative and influential in developing Switch TV’s News agenda and set an example for the producers to follow and to formulate ideas which will inspire audiences.
    • Plan, structure, write and produce content for use on TV, Digital and Radio and to develop treatments of the highest quality and with journalism at the heart.
    • Oversee and comply content and ensure it meets Switch TV’s guidelines and legal requirements.
    • Generate ideas and material that can work across all platforms in order to maximize impact and efficiencies.
    • Find and brief contributors, guests, analysts and so forth for live and edited stories and in some cases interview them for broadcast.
    • Any other duty as may be assigned by the Managing Editor.
    • Presenting allocated TV bulletins, live events and breaking news
    • Ensuring appearance is as per house rules
    • Conducting well researched and high-impact interviews on television
    • Producing elements of the bulletin, book guests, prepping them and doing research for the interview
    • Packaging and delivering stories for the bulletin
    • Gather facts on breaking news/developing stories and fact check.
    • Re-purposing stories from wire services such as Reuters and AFP for television audiences.

    EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCES

    • University Degree/Diploma in Journalism or a relevant field from a recognized institution

    News Anchor

    OVERALL PURPOSE:

    Reporting to the News Editor, the job holder will be responsible for anchoring news bulletins, conducting on location and studio interviews as well as general news reporting duties.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assess the news leads obtained from ENG team members and work on these in association with the Editorial Desk in order to prepare story ideas.
    • Secure interviews with different individuals and conduct these interviews in order to gather the required news material.
    • Verify the authenticity of the news material collected from different sources before it goes live.
    • Prepare news articles and packages; Write new articles and produce packages from the material gathered or edit the already written articles.
    • Research about the news via relevant sources. Study the news material collated from different sources thoroughly.
    • Work in tight deadlines and also derive work from other ENG news team members on time so that the news is ready for the slot it is to be read at.
    • May be assigned to work for the radio or television depending upon preference and the availability of job.
    • Read and presents the entire news story/bulletin within the given time.
    • Use certain means to stay connected with audiences and provide them news updates from time to time; this may be done via social media.
    • Come up with new news programs covering different stories related to the current affairs.
    • Edit news articles and packages for consistency and accuracy reflecting vision and mission of Switch Tv.
    • Duties as may be assigned by the Supervising News Editor to participate in company related functions and activities that lead to the promotion of the brand product.
    • Ensure timely delivery of bulletin/editorial property.
    • Any other duty as may be assigned by the Supervising News Editor

     

    EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCES

    • University degree in Mass Communication or a relevant field from a recognized institution.
    • At least two (2) years relevant experience working as a news anchor.
    • Must have demonstrated professionalism and positive ability in work performance
    • High command of English and/or Kiswahili languages (multi-lingual on-air capacity is a plus)
    • Must be a photogenic and camera friendly individual
    • Be familiar with public service news broadcasting
    • Have an understanding of the media law
    • Must be profoundly articulate in English and/or Kiswahili language(s)
    • Must have a good voice
    • Must possess good or basic research, interviewing and reporting skills
    • Ability to work without close supervision and flexible beyond normal working hours
    • High integrity, good interpersonal skills and teamwork
    • Ability to translate from English to Kiswahili or vice versa will be an added advantage
    • Membership to a registered professional body is desirable
    • Must be computer literate.
