    Project Manager

    Job Summary

    The Project Manager will be responsible for the overall management of theproject, including the mobilisation of all project inputs, Supervision over projectstaff, consultants and sub- contractors.He/She will also be responsible for the overall day to day running of the projectincluding overall coordination, planning, management, implementation,monitoring and evaluation and reporting of all project activities:

    • Bachelor’s degree; field from a recognized institution; in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Mining, Geology, Chemical Engineering or Chemical/ Biological Sciences or any other related
    • MSc. degree field from a recognized institution; in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Mining, Geology, Chemical Engineering or Chemical/ Biological Sciences or in any other related field.

    Added advantages

    • PhD in any of the above ,or related fields; and
    • Specialized training in toxic chemicals; and waste; and monitoring and evaluation;

    Experience

    In addition the applicant should have the following:

    • At least ten (10) years’ experience in the implementation; management, monitoring and evaluation; of environmental projects;
    • Five (5) of which (years) must have been in the Implementation of projects related to toxic chemicals;

    Added advantages

    • Experience in the implementation; management, monitoring and evaluation; of projects related to mercury; and ASGM; in particular;
    • Proven experience in working with government ministries, national or county institutions that are concerned with natural resource and/ or environmental management.

    Competencies

    Applicants should also have a demonstrated ability in the following:-

    • Manage the implementation of large Multi-stakeholder projects,
    • Manage technical and administrative teams, work with a wide range of stakeholders across various sectors and at all levels;
    • Develop durable partnerships with collaborating agencies;
    • Coordinate and supervise multiple Regional Project Officers ; and national and international consultants/experts, in their implementation of technical activities in partnership with a variety of subnational stakeholder groups,
    • including community and government;
    • Demonstrate an understanding of government development priorities, policies, Financial and Accounting Regulations and Procedures.

    The Applicant should also demonstrate possession of:-

    • Good computer application skills in common word processing (Ms Word), Spread Sheet ( Ms Excel) and internet search;
    • Excellent drafting, presentation and report-writing skills;
    • Excellent networking , interpersonal and communication skills;
    • Good knowledge about the political and socio-economical context related to ASGM at the international, national and subnational levels; and
    • Excellent command of English and Kiswahili.

    Responsibilities

    • Plan the activities of the project and monitor progress against the approved work- plan;
    • Supervise and coordinate all project inputs; the production of project outputs, as per the project document in a timely and high quality fashion; while ensuring that these adhere to UNDP procedures for nationally executed project;
    • Coordinate the recruitment and selection of project personnel, consultant and sub-contracts, including drafting terms of reference (TORs) and work specifications and overseeing all contractors work;
    • Manage requests for the provision of financial resources by UNDP, through advance of funds, direct payments, or reimbursement using the UNDP format provided;
    • Monitor financial resources and accounting to ensure accuracy and reliability of financial reports;
    • Liaise with UNDP, Project Board, relevant government agencies and all project partners, including donor organizations and CSOs; for effective coordination of all project activities;
    • Oversee and ensure timely submission of all financial reports, and other reports as may be required by UNDP, GEF and UNEP;
    • Oversee the exchange and sharing of experiences and lessons learned
    • with relevant ASGM projects nationally and Internationally; In collaboration with the GEF GOLD global component,
    • identify opportunities for communication of project activity results at a global level on quarterly basis; and
    • Assist community groups, municipalities, CSOs, Staff, Students and others with development of essential skills through training workshops and on the  job training thereby increasing their institutional capabilities

    Regional Project Officer

    Job Summary

    The Regional Project Officer will coordinate the day-to-day implementation ofproject activities; and follow-up at the respective projects site level.Project officers will be responsible for liaison with local government entities(county level) and project beneficiaries in the project priority sites where theyare stationed, on all aspects related to the project.

    Qualifications

    The applicant must possess the following:-

    Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution; in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Mining, Geology, Chemical Engineering or Chemical/ Biological Sciences; or in any other related field;

    Added advantages

    • MSc. degree field from a recognized institution; in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Mining, Geology, Chemical Engineering or Chemical/ Biological Sciences or in any other related field.

    • Support the implementation of the awareness raising campaign.
    • Provide day to day support of mining groups in the formalization efforts, gaining access to financing and supporting establishment of mercury-free processing plants.
    • Support the monitoring of project results.

    Finance Officer

    Job Summary

    The position will entail assisting the Project Manager in the day to daymanagement of the project financial activities.The Project Finance Officer will be responsible for the overall provision of financeservices, ensuring high quality, accuracy and consistency of work.

    Qualifications

    The applicant must be in possession of the following:-

    • A Bachelors degree in any of the following disciplines:- Finance and Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management, BCom(finance option}; or any other relevant qualification from a recognized
    • institution;
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)K or Association of Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA);
    • Membership to a professional body; and
    • Specialized certification in Accounting and Finance will be an added

    advantage.

    Experience

    In addition the applicant should:-

    • Have a minimum of 5(five) years of proven work experience in the field of finance; or accounts of foreign funded projects; (3) three of which must have been in budgeting, planning and reporting on donor funded
    • programmes and international auditing experience;
    • Be conversant with government procurement, financial and accounting regulations and procedures.

    • Familiarity with technical assistance projects and UNDP programme in Kenya; and
    • Experience in working with government ministries, national or county institutions.

    Competencies

    Applicants must also have a demonstrable ability in the following:-

    • To administer budgets, and work effectively with counterpart staff at all levels and with all groups involved in the project;
    • Proficiency in Financial Management Computer applications common word processing (Ms Word), Spread sheet (Ms Excel) and Accounting Software;
    • Strong drafting, presentation and reporting skills; and
    • Strong analytical skills, good inter-personal and team building skills.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist the Project Manager and National Project Coordinator in project budget implementation, monitoring and revision;
    • Set up an accounting system, including reporting forms and file system for the project;
    • Ensure that all expenditures of the project are in accordance with NIM procedures;
    • Continuously improve systems & procedures to enhance internal controls and satisfy audit requirements;
    • Provide logistical support in procurement, and contracting activities; and
    • Compile financial reports and budget revisions, for submission to the National Project Coordinator and Project Manager, and to UNDP as required.

    Project Assistant

    Job Summary

    The Project Assistant will assist the Project Manager in the day to daymanagement and oversight of the project activities;He/she will provide financial and administrative services - ensuring high quality,accuracy and consistency of work and promote a client-oriented approachconsistent with ME&F/UNDP rules and regulations.

    Qualifications

    Applicants must possess the following:-

    • A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification; Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, Mining, Geology, Chemical Engineering or Chemical/ Biological Sciences or any other related field from a recognized institution;
    • Training on ASGM will be an added advantage

    Experience

    • At least three (3) years of work experience preferably in a project involving natural resources management or chemicals and waste management;
    • Previous experience with UN projects will be a definite asset;
    • Knowledge in government regulations and procedures;
    • Familiarity with technical assistance projects and UNDP programme in Kenya is an asset;
    • Knowledge on Kenya Gold Mercury in the Artisanal and Small- Scale Gold Mining (ASGM); and
    • Experience in Chemobs and waste projects will be an added advantage.

    Competencies

    • Ability to administer budgets, train and work effectively with counterpart staff at all levels and with all groups involved in the project;
    • Strong drafting, presentation and reporting skills;
    • Strong analytical skills, good inter-personal and team building skills;
    • Proficiency in the use of computer software applications especially MS Word and MS Excel; and
    • Good command of English and Kiswahili.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist the Project Manager in the day to day management and oversight of project activities;
    • Assist in the preparation of progress reports;
    • Ensure all project documentation (progress report, consulting and other technical reports, minutes of meetings, e.t.c) are properly maintained in hard and electronic copies in an efficient and readily accessible filing system, for when required by UNDP, Project Consultants and other PMU staff; and
    • Provide PMU with related administrative and logistical assistance.
