    Director Institute of Primate Research

    Position Functions:

    Reporting to Director General and working in collaboration with other directorates, the position holder shall contribute to the formulation and implementation of overall NMK Research policies and strategic planning.

    This entails:-

    • Implementation and co-ordination of the programmes and activities of a large multi-disciplinary research team and advising the Director General on their progress;
    • Monitoring performance and evaluating staff and team working in the Directorate;
    • Administering and allocating resources from the Directorate’s budgets to departments, and overseeing expenditure;
    • Promoting National/international institutional partnership with relevant research institution, government departments and stakeholders;
    • Ensuring effective internal communication flow of information within the Directorate and with other Directorates.

    The officer will also be required to: – liaise with collaborating institutions, and local and international donor agencies on research issues; planning and control human, financial and material resources; represent the Directorate in top management meetings; and liaise with Director of HR and Administration for effective staffing and staff development. The position holder will moreover perform any other relevant duties as assigned from time to time.

    Qualification requirements:

    The applicant must:

    1. Have served in the grade of Senior Research Scientist or an equivalent position in a reputable research organization for at least five (5) years
    2. Be in possession of a relevant PhD Degree
    3. Have published at least seven (7) scientific articles in peer review scientific journals as a first author
    4. Have demonstrated success in generating research funds for the specified area of study of not less than $ 200,000
    5. Have organized of at least seven (7) seminars and workshops
    6. Have shown exemplary administrative and leadership capabilities.

    Salary and benefits attached to the position:

    • Basic salary scale: 147,907-220,142; entry scale 147,907
    • Outpatient medical allowance: 2,500
    • Leave allowance: 15,000
    • House allowance: 60,000
    • Commuter allowance: 16,000
    • Entertainment allowance: 8,000
    • Responsibility allowance: 15,000

    Inpatient medical: The position holder will be entitled to inpatient medical benefits as per the existing inpatient medical scheme to cover him/her, the spouse and four children under the age of 25 years.

    Duty station: The Director Institute of Primate Research will be based at Karen in Nairobi

    Terms of service: Three (3) years renewable contract renewable once subject to performance.

    Director Antiquities, Sites and Monuments (NM2)

    Position Functions:

    • Reporting to Director General and working in collaboration with other directorates,
    • The position holder shall contribute to the formation and implementation of overall NMK policies and strategic planning for the development and expansion of Museums Sites and Monuments;
    • Setting conservation standards and practices for the Museums Sites and Monuments;
    • and the development of the public programmes which include exhibitions education and other outreach programmes and community links.
    • The officer will also be required to liaise with Director of Research with a view to promoting relevant research and disseminating research information to the public in their respective regions;
    • Promote National/International institutional partnerships with relevant stakeholders related to public programmes and heritage conservation management;
    • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the staff and of the team working with the directorate.
    • The officer, in liaison with the heads of stations in various regions and the Director of HR and Administration will ensure effective staffing and staff development;
    • provide leadership and support to regional heads, Nairobi Museum and the coordinators of public programmes and physical planning;
    • Account for and co-ordinate the planning of activities in the directorate; administer, allocate, and be accountable for the resources allocated from the directorate’s budgets to the regions and Nairobi Museum; and liaise with the Director General and legal office on legal issues relating to museums, sites and monuments.
    • The officer will further, in collaboration with various directorates and in line with NMK policy and standards stimulate and take active part in the fundraising efforts and support and monitor the development of revenue generation in the Museums Sites and Monuments;
    • Advise and coordinate proposal writing and grant applications linked to the Directorate of Antiquities, Sites and monuments; ensure effective internal communication and flow of information within the directorate and with other directorates and Director General’s office;
    • Promote networking and exchanges between the NMK regional units and the National Museum of Kenya;
    • Promote National/International institutional partnerships with the relevant stakeholders related to public programmes and heritage conservation management;
    • Maintain quality control of all outsourced services in relation to the directorate’s activities.
    • The position holder will moreover perform any other relevant duties as assigned from time to time.

    Qualification requirements:

    The applicant must :

    1. Have served in the grade of a Assistant Director, National Museums, Sites and Monuments or a comparable position in a reputable organization
    2. Be in possession of a Masters Degree in a relevant scientific field of study plus seven years experience in a reputable organization
    3. Have demonstrated high administrative and leadership skills.

    • Basic salary scale: 147,907-220,142; entry scale 147,907

    Chief Procurement Officer

    Duties and responsibilities:

    The position holder will report the Director Administration and Human Resource and will be required to:

    • Head Procurement Section
    • Advice the Director Administration and Human Resource on all procurement matters
    • Co-ordinate all procurement activities
    • Supervise, monitor performance and periodically evaluate the activities of all procurement personnel in the Department
    • Institute periodical management inspections every six months to assess utilization and control of supplies
    • Initiate and develop procurement policies for the institution in line with various applicable statutory laws
    • Develop the organization’s procurement plan and manual
    • Review procurement documentations for both local and overseas orders
    • Prepare advertisement and procurement notices; analyze tender documents; prepare purchase orders as per approved tender/quotes; and prepare and submit written reports on procurement issues to the Director Administration and Human Resource
    • Any other relevant duties as assigned from time to time

    Qualifications requirements

    For one to be appointed to this grade, one must:

    • Have served as Senior Procurement Officer for a period of three (3) years in a reputable organization
    • Be in possession of a Masters Degree (Supplies Management Option) or its equivalent
    • Be registered by the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supplies Management
    • Have shown merit and ability in his/her job performance
    • Have demonstrated high administrative capabilities

    Head of Planning and Strategy Department

    Duties and responsibilities

    The position holder will report to the Director Administration and Human Resource and will be charged with:

    • Coordinating NMK annual performance contracting process at all stages including setting targets, signing of performance contracts, collection of data, quarterly and annual reporting
    • Coordinating development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation NMK strategic plan
    • Coordinating planning function including annual work plans in accordance with the strategic plan and other guidelines issued from time to time
    • Coordinating NMK budgeting process and organizing mid-term review
    • Continuous review of quality management systems to ensure continuous improvement of NMK services
    • Any other relevant duties as assigned from time to time.

    Qualifications requirements:

    For appointment to this position, an officer must;

    • Have at least a masters degree from a recognised university in Social Sciences, Project Management, or relevant subject
    • Have demonstrable experience of designing, monitoring and evaluation tools, surveys and evaluations
    • Have served at senior level management position in a reputable organization for at least five years
    • Have strong interpersonal skills and managerial capacity
    • Have experience in technical report writing
    • Have a strong leadership, strategic planning and management skills
    • Have shown ability and merit in job performance
    • Be computer literate
