    Senior Associate

    Job Description

    CrossBoundary is recruiting a Senior Associate.  We are seeking candidates with experience working in East Africa, contacts across the region’s financial services sector preferred, and a thorough understanding of the investment landscape in East Africa.

    As Senior Associate, you will co-lead a team of investment professionals tasked with evaluating investment opportunities, conducting macroeconomic markets assessments, and providing transaction support. Experience working with a range of stakeholders (including private equity firms, Development Finance Institutions, and development agencies) to support investments in high impact sectors as well as experience in East Africa will be regarded favourably.

    CrossBoundary is not a development firm and is not seeking typical development skills. Candidates should have 5+ years of experience working in high calibre finance or consulting organizations and an interest in having an impact in frontier markets. A Master’s degree in Business Administration or Finance is expected but extensive relevant experience may be accepted as equivalent.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Transaction identification and evaluation
    • Willingness to work and live in sometimes challenging environment
    • Lead identification and assessment of investment opportunities
    • Prepare presentations with business plans, explanation of management structure, competitive landscape, and financial projection to recommend strategies
    • Market assessment and ongoing market analysis
    • Conduct macroeconomic, regulatory, and operational assessments
    • Provide sector analysis of priority areas for investment
    • Investor sourcing
    • Lead identification of qualified investors
    • Manage numerous investor relationships
    • Transaction support
    • Lead team in supporting complex transactions
    • Develop deal marketing presentations
    • Develop and supervise valuation activities and detailed financial models
    • Perform sensitivity analysis and stress testing to examine impacts on valuation
    • Coordinate due diligence and transaction execution
    • Oversee drafting and negotiations of terms sheets

    Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

    • Demonstrated leadership skills; preferably in fast moving and complex environments
    • Excellent analytical ability and discipline; ability to think clearly, structure problems logically and then design and implement solutions that focus on the core issues
    • Excellent quantitative skills; ability to apply analytical rigor to complex and uncertain tasks
    • Knowledge of corporate finance and familiarity with company evaluation and valuation techniques
    • Ability to build strong relationships with clients and colleagues in stressful environments
    • Excellent presentation skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences
    • Comfort with ambiguity; ability to operate effectively in a changing context
    • Willingness to work and live in sometimes challenging environment
    • Knowledge of East African investment landscape (or previous work experience in East Africa)
    • Experience working with a range of stakeholders (including private equity firms, Development Finance Institutions, and development agencies) to support investments in high impact sectors
    • 5+ years of experience working in high caliber finance or consulting organizations
    • Past experience working in investment space in East Africa preferred
    • Bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree in Business Administration or Finance or other relevant advanced degree preferred  (extensive relevant experience may be accepted as equivalent)

    Location

    Nairobi, Kenya (40%+ travel throughout the region expected)

    Administrative Assistant

    Job Description

    We are currently looking for an Administrative Assistant to facilitate the efficient operations of the Nairobi office by performing a variety of clerical and administrative tasks. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem solver with excellent communication skills and attention to detail. We are looking for a candidate with previous experience working in an office environment, performing administrative duties, and providing support to a highly diverse team. Additionally, candidates much have a solid working knowledge of office processes, computer software, and electronic communications tools. This role is responsible for responding to ad hoc requests, coordinating/tracking projects, and managing business-as-usual projects such as filing, copying, researching printer problems, and organizing logistics.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Greet visitors and point them in the right direction, answer inquiries, and create a welcoming environment
    • Process and direct mail and incoming packages or deliveries
    • Perform a range of staff and/or operational support activities; serve as a liaison with other departments on basic administrative and/or operational matters
    • Arrange meetings and conferences; schedule interviews and appointments and perform other duties related to maintaining one or more individual schedules; make travel and lodging arrangements, either directly or through travel agencies
    • Carry out administrative duties such as filing, typing, copying, binding, scanning, etc.
    • Order, stock, and distributes office supplies
    • Submit and reconcile office expense reports
    • Organize all shipments and distribution routes to ensure timely deliveries e.g., swag items, team care packages, etc.
    • Assist in organizing and supervising other office activities e.g., event planning, team lunches, etc.
    • Ensure that basic facilities, such as water and heating, are well-maintained
    • Oversee the operations of office equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements such as calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, evaluating new equipment, etc.
    • Address employee’s queries regarding office management issues (e.g., stationery, hardware, travel arrangements, etc.)
    • Anticipate the needs of others to ensure there is a seamless and positive experience
    • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will have the following skills and qualifications:

    • 2+ years of related experience working in an office environment, performing administrative duties, and providing support to the team
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent customer service skills required
    • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly
    • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
    • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and stay calm under pressure

    Data Scientist

    Job Description

    CrossBoundary is recruiting a full-time Data Scientist. We are seeking candidates with proven skills in managing large data sets; applying statistics, machine learning, and other techniques to drive towards meaningful insights; and presenting these insights to varied stakeholders.

    CrossBoundary is not a development firm and is not seeking typical development skills. As a Data Scientist, you will be a part of a cross-disciplinary team that has the potential to create a significant positive impact on underserved communities. You will work with data sets of vastly varying size, granularity, and quality and connect that information to concrete recommended actions. Data Scientist candidates should have at least 5 years of work experience (or applicable post-graduate education), with 2—3 years of experience working in high-caliber data science or consulting organizations. Experience working in developing countries will be regarded favorably.

    Qualifications

    • Experience working in developing countries will be regarded favorably
    • Expertise in at least one data-focused programming language (e.g.: Python, R, MATLAB) and version control (e.g.: Git/GitHub)
    • Expertise in advanced statistical applications: non-parametric regression and classification, Bayesian methods, etc.
    • Expertise in visualization libraries (e.g.: Plotly, ggplot2, Tableau)
    • Experience manipulating and transforming large data sets (e.g.: SQL, Spark, HDFS)
    • Experience in numerical optimization (e.g.: gradient-based techniques and MILP) is a plus
    • Experience with GIS tools (e.g.: ArcGIS, QGIS) is a plus
    • Ability to work independently and to learn new skills with minimal supervision
    • Excellent presentation skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences

    Location

    Candidates will join our team in Nairobi, Kenya. (Frequent travel is expected.)
