    Communications Officer

    Position Summary

    • The Communications Officer will play a critical role in raising HOVUC's profile and ensuring effective communication with communities, partners, donors, and the public. The role requires a dynamic individual who can combine creativity with strategic thinking to tell impactful stories of our work. The officer will manage digital platforms, create compelling content, document project impact, and support organizational advocacy and fundraising efforts.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develop and implementa comprehensive communications and visibility strategy aligned with HOVUC's vision and programs.
    • Manage, update, and grow HOVUC's online presence across all social media platforms and the organizational website.
    • Produce high-quality photos, videos, and human-interest stories that highlight community impact, project achievements, and beneficiary voices.
    • Edit photos and videos for use in donor reports, publications, and digital campaigns.
    • Draft press releases, newsletters, donor updates, policy briefs, and advocacy materials.
    • Ensure brand consistency and adherence to donor visibility guidelines across all communications.
    • Monitor and analyze communication metrics, providing regular reports to improve outreach and engagement.
    • Support program teams with documentation of success stories, case studies, and campaign content.
    • Strengthen media relations and foster partnerships with local and national media outlets.
    • Support fundraising initiatives and donor engagement through strategic storytelling and impactful visibility products.
    • Train and mentor staff and youth champions on basic communication and documentation skills.

    Qualifications & Skills

    • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, Development Studies, or a related field with equivalent practical experience.
    • At least 2-3 years of experience in communications, media, or a similar role within an NGO, CBO, or development organization.
    • Proven ability to manage organizational social media accounts and grow digital engagement.
    • Experience in Circle.so for community engagement and advocacy communication.
    • Strong photography, videography, and editing skills (portfolio required).
    • Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to tailor content to diverse audiences.
    • Creativity, innovation, and the ability to translate complex program information into compelling stories.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team.
    • Familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is an added advantage.
    • Experience in digital and media advocacy is an added advantage.
    • Understanding of pleasure-inclusive SRHR, gender equality, women and youth empowerment will be an added advantage.
    • Must be a resident of Kisumu County or willing to reside in Kisumu County.

    Agri-Enterprise Development Officer

    Position Summary

    • The Agri-Enterprise Development Officer will oversee HOVUC's agri-enterprise ventures, including smart/organic/vertical farming and poultry enterprises, ensuring they remain profitable, sustainable, and impactful as demonstration and training sites. The officer will provide technical expertise, manage farm operations, build market linkages, and support women and youth in establishing agri-businesses. The role requires a mix of hands-on agricultural skills, enterprise development, and market development expertise.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Manage day-to-day operations of HOVUC's smart farm (organic, vertical, and tech farming) and poultry enterprise (layers, incubation, chick brooding, and improved kienyeji production).
    • Ensure the farms function as demonstration and training sites for youth and women on sustainable agribusiness.
    • Develop and implement strategies for maximizing farm productivity and profitability while maintaining eco-friendly and climate-smart practices.
    • Oversee the sale and distribution of farm produce (vegetables, eggs, chicks, mature birds, etc.),ensuring quality standards and customer satisfaction.
    • Conduct market research and establish linkages with buyers, suppliers, and other stakeholders to grow the sustainability ventures.
    • Provide technical support, consultations, and training to local farmers, youth, and women groups on poultry and smart farming enterprise development.
    • Document lessons, case studies, and impact stories from the agri-enterprise initiatives for visibility and fundraising.
    • Support the development of new agri-business ventures and innovations to expand HOVUC's sustainability portfolio.
    • Collaborate with program teams to integrate economic empowerment and agribusiness learning into community development programs.

    Qualifications & Skills

    • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Animal Science, Horticulture, Agronomy, or related field.
    • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in poultry farming and/or smart/organic/tech farming.
    • Proven experience in agribusiness development, market linkages, or cooperative/farmer enterprise strengthening.
    • Strong knowledge of poultry management (layers, incubation, brooding, improved kienyeji) and climate-smart farming practices.
    • Ability to train, mentor, and provide advisory services to farmers, youth, and women groups.
    • Entrepreneurial mindset with demonstrated ability to turn agricultural initiatives into sustainable business ventures.
    • Strong record-keeping, financial literacy, and agribusiness planning skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging communities and market stakeholders.
    • Knowledge of digital tools for marketing farm products is an added advantage.
    • Must be a resident of Kisumu County or willing to reside in Kisumu County.

    Finance/HR & Administration Department Intern

    Reports to: Finance Officer

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Support day-to-day finance operations, including filing, data entry, and record keeping.
    • Assist in preparation of payment vouchers, receipts, and petty cash reconciliation.
    • Help with HR and administrative tasks such as maintaining staff records, drafting correspondence, and logistics support.
    • Support audits, donor compliance, and procurement processes.

    Farm Attendant (2 Posts)

    Position Summary

    • The Farm Attendants will play a key role in ensuring smooth operations of HOVUC's smart farming and poultry projects. They will be responsible for supporting daily farm activities, maintaining high standards of animal and crop husbandry, and ensuring that demonstration farms serve as effective training grounds for women and youth.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Support day-to-day management of the poultry unit, including feeding, cleaning, brooding, vaccination, and record keeping.
    • Assist in managing smart farming activities such as vertical gardens, organic farming practices, irrigation, and harvesting.
    • Ensure proper hygiene, biosecurity, and maintenance of farm structures and equipment.
    • Assist in incubation processes, chick brooding, and care of both kienyeji and improved kienyeji birds.
    • Support packaging and preparation of produce (eggs, vegetables, poultry) for market and training purposes.
    • Work closely with the Agri-Enterprise Development Officer to provide practical training support during youth and women's economic empowerment sessions.
    • Monitor farm inputs, report farm health concerns promptly, and support farm record keeping.

    Qualifications & Skills

    • Basic Education with ability to speak English or Swahili; a certificate in General Agriculture or related field will be an added advantage.
    • Practical experience in poultry or crop farming (experience in both is an advantage).
    • Basic knowledge of animal health, vaccination, and smart/organic farming techniques.
    • Ability to work physically on farm tasks and maintain attention to detail.
    • Strong sense of responsibility, honesty, and teamwork.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Must be a resident of Kisumu County or willing to reside in Kisumu County.
