Job Purpose
The purpose of the job is to carry out a full range of dental examinations, care and related procedures for the hospital’s patients in line with established protocols.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

• Consultation – Ask questions regarding the patient’s ailments, history, symptoms, discomfort or pain in order to understand the patient’s condition. Recommend tests in order to further clarify the patient’s condition and disease.
• Report writing – Prepare a structured medical report for each patient capturing background information of the ailment, medical history, physical examination, specimens obtained and suggested treatment.
• Patient files – Maintain patient files and undertake continuous monitoring and regular evaluation of activities.
• Diagnosis – Assess collected information and tests. Utilise medical knowledge and expertise to establish a diagnosis.
• Treatment – Compile and analyse data collected from dental surveys, dental care programmes and patient records to evaluate the quality of service received by patients.
• Health and Safety – Comply with established health and safety policies with regard to the handling of instruments, storage of drugs and disposal of sharps and other potentially dangerous equipment and substances.
• Patient health advice – Educate and counsel patients on improving health and preventing disease, and on interventions or treatments that address risk factors.
• Training – Train graduate trainees and dental assistants undertaking their post-medical training.

Minimum Qualifications, Regulatory & Legal Requirements

• Bachelor of Dental Surgery or its equivalent
• Practising licence from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council
• A minimum of 3 – 4 years’ experience in a similar position
• Continuous Professional Development (CPD) required
• Emergency training (ACLS)

Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Examine patients’ teeth and mouth
• Assess the dental condition and needs of patients using patient screening and monitoring procedures
• Analyse x-rays and evaluate dental needs as necessary, including medical history review and dental charting
• Take, develop and mount radiographs, as well as trace radiographs required for corrective treatment
• Undertake general treatment and care for teeth and tissue problems using specified equipment and tools and established dental hygienist procedures
• Clean teeth using brushes and polishers to remove plaque and stains, ensuring that sterile conditions are maintained
• Fill cavities, rebuild broken teeth, replace missing teeth, and remove unnecessary or severely damaged teeth
• Treat and help to prevent gum disease
• Provide instruction on dental care and write prescriptions for patients
• Make impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts
• Document patient dental history, chief complaints and observations
• Document lab procedures and ensure follow up on results
• Supervise staff and clinic processes
• Recommend and ensure cost-effective buying of equipment and supplies, and maintain proper bookkeeping of the same
• Keep up to date with new developments within the profession, maintaining patient dental records

Qualifications & Other Requirements

• Diploma in Community Oral Health
• Membership with a recognised professional body
• At least 1 year’s work experience in a busy dental clinic

Key Performance Indicators

• Seeing patients at a turnaround of 30 minutes
• Extended knowledge of crown and bridge cutting
• Efficient patient management skills

Job Purpose
To assist the Dentist in performing treatment for patients in restorative dentistry or oral surgery.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

• Dental Administration – Assist the dentist in the administration of treatment at the dental chairside as required by the dentist.
• Infection Control – Maintain a sterile and neat working environment according to current infection control procedures.
• Documentation – Document dental care services by maintaining patients’ records.
• Materials – Provide materials by selecting, mixing and placing materials on instruments and in the patient’s mouth.
• Emergencies – Help the dentist manage dental and medical emergencies by maintaining CPR certification, emergency drug and oxygen supply.
• Patient Instruction – Provide postoperative instructions as directed by the dentist, together with dental hygiene, oral health care and plaque control programmes for patients.
• Laboratory Records – Document lab procedures, ensure follow up on results, and record treatment information in patient records.
