    Harvest Director

    About the Team
     
    Komaza partners with rural farmers to plant and grow thousands of hectares of new woodlots.  We sustainably manage the woodlots we’ve planted through efficient harvest operations. We lead research and innovation in technical forestry for smallholder farmers. The Harvest Department leverages data, mobile technology, training, and user-centered business systems to empower Komaza make better farmer related decisions to become the future of African forestry. We are equally comfortable whiteboarding new solutions to complex business problems, digging into excel and GIS, or getting our boots muddy talking to farmers in their fields.
     
    About This Role
     
    The Harvest department is one of the newest teams at Komaza and is expected to grow dramatically over the new few years - hiring dozens of staff, investing in mechanization, adding new teams in Kwale county, and providing some support to our pilot in central Kenya. In this role you will build, lead and grow our harvest planning and operations. You’ll work closely with company leadership to develop and refine the strategic vision for the Harvest department for the next 3-5 years and prioritize activities to achieve this vision. You’ll develop, implement and optimize the management systems, training materials, and SOPs to enable significant growth of Harvest operations. As Harvest Director, you will directly report to the VP Forestry Operations.

    What You Will Do

    • Harvest OMS: Build the harvest operations management system (OMS) which will allow the harvest operations coordinators to manage dozens of staff and thousands of farms remotely.
    • Team: Build the team needed to design our harvest systems and execute them at scale.
    • Harvest Systems: Build efficient, effective systems to ensure all farms are thinned/clearfelled/coppice clearfelled at the right time and at the right $/CBM.
    • Harvest Data: Work with our technology and growth modeling teams to collect, validate, store, analyze and report the huge volumes of data needed to managed thousands of wood lots across Kilifi and Kwale counties.
    • Harvest Innovation: After building the basic systems above, take the lead on designing step-change improvements or modifications to our harvest systems.
    • Harvest Execution: Manage, inspire, coach, and problem-solve with the team to hit forest management, CBM, and cost per CBM targets.

    Business Intelligence Associate

    Job Summary

    The Business Intelligence team has achieved a critical milestone this year. We are on the brink of transitioning to a new custom Komaza web application that will connect data across our farmer journey from enrollment to payment -- allowing us to track dynamic data and improve operational oversight. Our Business Intelligence Associates play a critical role in enriching Komaza’s business by collaborating with multiple departments to ensure we gather the right information with a high degree of data integrity in order to develop insights for our rapid expansion across East Africa.
     
    About The Team
     
    Data plays a critical role at Komaza - by putting a smartphone in the hand of every single Field Extension agent, we are able to collect and analyze real-time information on all aspects of our value chain from Planting to Sales. Working in close collaboration with the Technology Development team (who create custom software to collect and store this data) Business Intelligence is the central nervous system of information at Komaza, and is tasked with designing new visualization tools, dashboards and human systems for leveraging data in our day-to-day operations. A core focus of the department is defining and managing the seams between our diverse data systems. 
     
    About The Role

    What You Will Do
    • Work with our Technology Team to design the future of digital extension services for Agriculture
    • Identify and provide input to new technology opportunities that will have an impact on the Komaza-wide BI systems
    • Design, improve and implement data systems for our value chain operations, regional expansion sites, and shared service teams
    • Design and implement new data collection methods to keep our data complete, updated and useful 
    • Develop custom analytical tools for use across the company
    • Collaborate with value chain departments to extract meaningful insights for operational improvement
    • Serve as a data consultant to multiple departments, training others on best practices on research design methodology, as well as data collection tools and techniques
    • Develop data roadmaps, analysis, dashboards, process flows, survey forms and more 

    What You Should Have

    • Degree in Computer Science, MIS, Data Science or any other related field.
    • At least 3 years experience and knowledge with Business Analysis and/or related technical experience. 
    • Experience working in fast-paced, demanding environment of a fast-growth company
    • Experience working with data collection and management in remote/rural, challenging environments is a plus
    • Good command of google sheets, excel, any other software a plus (SQL, R, Python)
    • Knowledge of mapping tools (QGIS, Carto) and processes an added advantage

    About This Role
     
    This role supports and coordinates Komaza’s fleet of vehicles across the country. This includes motorcycles used by the Field and Harvest teams, and coordination of trucks used by the Nursery and Harvest teams.  Primary responsibilities will include maintaining vehicles for safe staff usage, coordinating delivery contractors, registering and licensing vehicles, ensuring on-time, safety-conscious, budget-friendly transportation of people, products, or materials.

    What You Will Do

    • Developing procedures to maximize productivity, cut expenses, and minimize mistakes and waste
    • Working with other managers to meet organizational and budgeting priorities.
    • Registering and licensing all Komaza-owned motorcycles.
    • Coordinate servicing of motorcycles at all locations as needed to ensure staff safety. This includes monitoring service delivery and pricing, and maintaining records of vehicle servicing.
    • Ensure strict servicing and maintenance times to minimize downtime and maintain schedules.
    • Utilizing GPS systems to monitor drivers and track both motorbikes and vehicles in case of theft.
    • Schedule, route, maintain, and track transport vehicles.
    • Negotiate with suppliers to ensure we receive the most competitive offer.
    • Develop efficient delivery schedules to minimize costs.
    • Analyze data on the effectiveness of delivery operations
    • Determine the scope of the repair or maintenance work needed to be done, prioritize the work repair orders and communicate the information to your supervisor

    What You Have

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Procurement or Logistics
    • At least 2+ years in a logistics role.
    • Added advantage if experienced in the transportation and or logistics industry.
