    Senior Advisor in Agriculture: Livestock Intensification Project

    The position will be based in Nairobi-Kenya; with intensive field engagement in the South-West Mau-Region

    Responsibilities

    To achieve this, the advisor will supervise and coordinate a team of advisors, consultants/LCBs and partners in the livestock component of the ISLA project. Below are indicative activities expected of this position:

    • Stakeholder Mapping and Selection; selection of model farmers, farmers, input suppliers, product up-takers and other service providers based agreed criteria
    • Designing livestock intensification models fitting to the ecosystem
    • Steering identification, selection and establishment of model farms;
    • Training of farmers on livestock intensification of models
    • Linking farmers to (new) markets
    • Support establishment/strengthening farmer aggregation and marketing enterprises
    • Support capacity development of training & extension staff of identified dairy groups/societies.
    • Develop market linkages in the livestock sector;considering farmer groups, cooperatives, up-takers and other players
    • Facilitating linkages with private input suppliers and service providers (including bio-digester providers);
    • Facilitating farmer learning and knowledge development through field days and exchange visits;
    • Offering support to farmers and dairy society’s with Feed & Fodder training programs and design and implementation of demonstrations for fodder establishment & preservation;
    • Developing a customized curriculum for the training of farmers based on the FFS approach to include good livestock production practices and environmental conservation.
    • Supporting KFS and CFA in planning forest grazing and fodder extraction
    • Engaging in policy dialogue on livestock in the forest in multi-stakeholder setting

    Qualifications

    Candidate Profile

    • Degree in agribusiness, agriculture economics or agriculture,
    • At least 8-10 years of practical experience in agriculture project management, with market facilitation and business development
    • At least 5 years of project implementation and oversight for dairy or livestock
    • Prior experience of climate smart agriculture approaches such as landscape approaches or conservation agriculture in crop and livestock production
    • Exposure to project development and management at sector/systemic level, including the management of projects
    • Governance know how and ability to manage multi-stakeholder engagement
    • Knowledge and experience on aspects of agricultural supply chains in the Kenya context
    • Excellent relationship management skills to manage the consortium
    • Proven ability in M&E and a knowledge development agenda
    • Good networks in the Kenya agriculture sector is an advantage

    Other Requirements

    • Management, training and coaching experience and skills
    • Extensive work experience in a multicultural environment
    • Good communication skills in English
    • Good computer skills
    • Willingness to travel to project regions in Kenya
