    Legal Associate

    Supervisor Title : Legal Services Manager

    Division: Board Secretarial and Legal Services

    Job Summary

    The Job Holder offers support to the Board Secretarial and Legal Services department and ensures that its activities, policies and procedures are compliant and in line with  statutory regulations and corporate governance

    Key Responsibilites

    • Drafting and review of legal documents including Contracts, Leases, letters of offer, Sale Agreement and Licences within the timelines set in the Company’s Standard Operating Procedure Manual
    • Assist the Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary in managing the Litigation portfolio of the CPF Group
    • Review and analyze the current cases and recommend appropriate measures for closure
    • Follow up on litigious cases for either an out of court settlement and/or ensure that all matters in court are handled efficiently.
    • Ensure that all documents required by the lawyers to effectively defend the Company’s interests are sent to the lawyers within 5 business days from the time they are required.
    • Respond to any correspondence from the External Counsel or from lawyers acting for a third party suing the Company within five business days from the time of receipt of the correspondence.
    • Ensure that all Company witnesses (in civil proceedings) are well briefed and prepared for hearing at least two days before the hearing date and attend Court;
    • Ensure that the Company receives comprehensive status reports within two business days after a hearing or mention of a case, advising the Company on the progress of the matter in question and the next steps to be taken with a view to expeditiously concluding the case.
    • Ensuring compliance with the policy, legal requirements and provisions in all the undertakings of the CPF Group.
    • Assist the Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary in filling the statutory annual returns with the relevant authorities.
    • Assist in the maintenance of a register of legal work done.
    • Assisting the Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary in advising the CPF Group on all legal matters
    • Research on various legal issues and provide timely legal advice on varying issues as requested by the Branches/ Company units (to respond to queries in at least one business day, unless the matter requires extensive research in which case this feedback should be given within three business days
    • Drafting and research of legal opinions as required by the Group Head of Legal and Company Secretary.
    • Respond to adhoc requests for legal advice within one business day.
    • Provide weekly updates on any Bills, Acts of Parliament or case law that will affect the CPF Group’s operations in any way (directly or indirectly).
    • Such other duties as may be assigned.

    Qualification and Experience Requirements

    • Bachelors of Law degree
    • Post graduate diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law
    • 1-2 years post admission working experience within commercial and conveyancing practise in a busy law firm or in-house counsel
    • Possess a valid practising licence
    • Computer Proficiency Proficiency
    • Developed commercial awareness with an outcome orientated approach and the ability to apply legal principles pragmatically

    Competence Requirements

    • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to work on own initiative
    • Possess the capacity to prioritize tasks and work under pressure
    • Motivated, dynamic and dedicated team player
