    Biostatistician, Population Health

    Currently the University offers fellowship programmes in the following specialties: Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Neonatology and Paediatric Neurology.

    Job Summary

    The Department of Population Health (DPH) Senior Statistician will support research projects/studies conducted by Faculty, students and Residents in the Faculty of Health Sciences, using various research designs including cohort, cross-sectional, randomized controlled, quasi-experimental, and diagnostic accuracy studies. S/he will teach Biostatistics courses (basic and advanced levels) in the under-graduate and post-graduate programmes in the Medical College, and will lead writing research proposals and grant applications for submission to external bodies. S/he will also provide advice on statistical methodology, and oversee quality control during data collection for ongoing projects, analysis of data and preparing articles for publication.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist in calculating sample size and analysis plans for research.
    • Assist faculty, students and staff in planning and developing the statistical aspects of their research manuscripts, including data analysis and interpretation of data collected.
    • Guide students on thesis research writing.
    • Supervise Masters (including MSc in Population Health Science and MMEd) and PhD students.
    • Design, plan, implement, assess and report the Biostatistics and Advanced Biostatistics courses according to the MSc Population Health Sciences curriculum.
    • Develop biostatistics courses for the MMed programme.
    • Design biostatistics course content for the PhD in Health Science programme.
    • Develop internal AKU capacity in biostatistics via short courses and seminars.
    • Assist faculty and staff in research grant applications, especially on the statistical and research design aspects.
    • Lead the writing of research proposals and grant applications for submission to donors.
    • Design and develop research studies in the department.
    • Prepare and analyse data and develop figures/tables for interim and final reports and manuscripts.
    • Write papers and submit to international peer-reviewed journals for publication.
    • Participate in team meetings and activities, objective setting and performance management.
    • Participate in improving processes, tools, systems and organization.
    • Participate in academic presentations regularly.
    • Contribute to the development and functioning of the faculty of health sciences as needed.

     Requirements

    • Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics and/or Epidemiology or similar);
    • Minimum 10 (ten) years of experience as statistician in health research;
    • Have teaching experience/activities and reflect a strong interest in teaching.
    • Highly advanced analysis skills using multiple statistical software, including STATA, R and SPSS.
    • Understanding of data management principles for clinical trials and health research
    • Applied knowledge of advanced statistical models, such as generalized linear models, survival analyses and mixed models in health research.
    • Good grasp of geospatial statistical and data science tools and methods will be a distinct advantage.
    • Advanced knowledge and experience of scientific reporting and manuscript preparation.
    • Demonstrated team leadership skills in diverse settings.
    • Self-driven and able to work independently.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Seeks and accepts advice and adheres to deadlines.
    • Punctual and respects commitments made.
    • Responsible team player.
