    Business Development Senior Manager

    Primary Purpose:

    The Business Development Manager (BDM) will actively seek to grow the Kenya Country office income and will lead on key multi-country funding opportunities and partnerships as required and will support in providing strategic leadership to Country’s institutional resource mobilization. As a result, he/she will act as the main focal point for Kenya Country Office for Business Development by establishing and maintaining close relationships with institutional donor technical and senior staff, including USAID, BHA, Feed the Future, WFP, ECHO and UK AID and others. The BD Manager, working under the supervision of the Kenya Program Coordinator, will coordinate with the CWS Africa Regional Deputy Representative for Programs and the CWS HQ Business Development Unit and the HQ Technical Unit to identify and track funding and partnership opportunities in a systematic manner in pursuit of CWS funding strategies. The BD Manager will lead project proposal development writing and work with relevant finance staff to develop and finalize project budgets for submission.  In the event of humanitarian emergency, the BD Manager will work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

    The BD Manager will provide guidance and capacity building on new business development, actively track, and analyze project pipeline and portfolios, on planning for key must win new opportunities, and for ensuring well-coordinated and competitive proposal management processes are used.

    The Kenya Country Office BD Manager will work collaboratively with counterparts in other CWS Africa Country Offices when called upon.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Duties:

    • Lead CWS Kenya resource mobilization initiative by writing winning project proposals for institutional funding in coordination with CWS Africa Regional Office and HQ BDU and HQ Technical Unit, and other stakeholders.
    • Develop and continuously review CWS Kenya fundraising and resource mobilization strategy in relation of to the strategic plan.
    • Familiarize with the CWS global fundraising and resource mobilization policies and guidelines.
    • Plan, execute, monitor, and evaluate fundraising activities leading to increased financial support for the CWS Kenya programs, and continuous learning to further develop and enhance these activities.
    • Track the periodic plan of action for fundraising and set annual fund-raising targets.
    • Collaborate with the Kenya Country Representative, program managers and other technical staff, to identify key funding gaps and potential funding sources the drafting of all proposal sections ensuring that all the pieces come together in a coherent, compliant with donor requirements, and in a winning manner.
    • Conduct research and identify new avenues for fundraising. This includes marketing CWS program methodologies to prospective donors and partner organizations.
    • Cultivate relationships with strategic partners, including technical advisors, researchers, and other professionals in support of CWS programming.
    • Continuously study market situation, carry out mapping of financial targets according to the CWS strategy and create opportunities for sustainability.
    • Establish a knowledge management system for fundraising in different levels of CWS.
    • Develop a database of current/previous donors and prospects and establish reporting system.
    • Contact and collaborate with individuals, humanitarian agencies, corporate sector, and financial institutions for fundraising collaboration.
    • Explore digital fundraising opportunities and collaborate with financial or technical institutions cooperation.
    • Work with the CWS Kenya program team on the development of guidance notes, standard operating procedures, tools, templates, best practices, lessons learned, and ensure consistent use of required tools by staff.
    • Work with the team on enhancing tools and processes that support “go/ no go” decisions and the monitoring of progress in relation to unsolicited fundraising.

    Proposal Management

    • Coordinate program teams in all stages of pre-award functions (concept note/proposal development, planning, drafting, editing, coordinating with potential proposal partners, internal clearances, and submission of high value solicitation documents) and efficient transfer of approved awards to CWS Africa SMT and HQ BDU.

    Capacity Strengthening & Knowledge Management

    • Developing a robust knowledge of ongoing trends and donor priorities
    • Compiling and Using Learning for Program Design & Resource Mobilization
    • Incorporating and institutionalizing learnings and best practices into program designs.
    • Leading and engaging in relevant key technical discussions within CWS Africa and with other partners.
    • Supporting program teams to develop presentations of their results and innovative strategies to position CWS Kenya in advance of upcoming proposals, including developing and updating capacity statements.
    • Representing CWS Africa programs in key forums.

    Qualifications

    Experience:

    • Minimum Eight (8) relevant experience in resource management, project proposal development with track record in winning competitive grants from governmental institutional donors such as USAID in sectors including WASH, Resilience, Disaster Risk Reduction, Agricultural Livelihoods, GBV and Community Mobilization. 
    • Minimum 3 years of direct supervisory experience is required
    • Experience and skills in networking and relations with institutional government donors, peer organizations, and civil society partners. Understanding of partnership principles.
    • Proficient in MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Web Conferencing Applications, information and budget management systems, knowledge-sharing networks.

     Knowledge/Skills

    • Familiarity with CWS, its activities and objectives.
    • Capacity to develop strong plans, Policies, Guidelines & SOPs related to fundraising.
    • Ability to analyze market situation & organization’s income-expenditure situation.
    • Capability to advocate & facilitate implementation of sustainable, long-term fundraising strategies.
    • Demonstrated Institutional Donor Relationship Management kills on and reporting systems.
    • Skills on asset management and business development
    • Communication and IT skills
    • Leadership communication and representation skill

    Abilities

    The Business Development Coordinator must have the ability to:

    • Ability to monitor, analyze, consult, and report on program services.
    • Ability to work with culturally diverse staff and populations and variety of stakeholders and audiences.
    • Develop funding proposals.
    • Ability to work independently as well as to function effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.
    • Ability to challenge, inspire, enable, model/mentor and encourage others.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict deadlines.
    • Take short- and long-term travel to program sites including difficult workstations.
    • Maintain high performance standards with attention to detail.
    • Conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner and represent a positive image of CWS.
    • Carry out all the duties of the position efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality with CWS Africa administrative and operational information.
    • Effectively manage CWS Africa’s resources.
