    Internship Supporting ESAR Education Section

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    UNICEF is an organization that is committed to diversity and inclusion within its workforce, and encourages all candidates, irrespective of gender, nationality, religious and ethnic backgrounds, including persons living with disabilities, to become a part of the organization. UNICEF has made some strides in closing the gender gap in several areas of the organization and will be requiring all offices to develop diversity strategies to further improve other areas of diversity (geographic, disability, etc.). There are several offices with varying contexts which face challenges in improving their diversity due to a number of factors.

    UNICEF Eastern and Southern African Regional Office’s (ESARO) Education Section is guided by the UNICEF Strategic Plan 2018-2021 - Goal Area 2: “Every child learns.” The Education Section supports Country Offices to promote basic education including early childhood education (ECE), education quality, adolescent girls’ education and education in emergencies, as well as the inclusion of children with disabilities in education. The Regional Office supports country offices through direct technical support, quality assurance and oversight, data management and analysis, generation and dissemination of research and tools, as well as partnership building. The Education Team in the Regional Office is seeking an intern for six months to support its work. The specifics of the work are given below.

    Scope of work:

    • Provide overall support to the Section and Regional Education Advisor as necessary.
    • Support the Knowledge Management function of the office in close consultation with the Knowledge Management Specialist (e.g. support the development and dissemination of evidence of teaching and learning).
    • Support the with the coordination of meetings as needed.
    • Execute the creation and circulation minutes and/or reports for meetings as needed.
    • Support the monitoring, data collection and management work around the school reopening processes after COVID in collaboration with the Education Specialist (Equity and Access).
    • Support the drafting and editing of UNICEF ESAR grant and project proposals.
    • Supporting the Education Specialist (Quality) liaise with ESAR Country Offices to implement digital learning programmes in the region.
    • Support the Education Specialist (Quality) liaise with ESAR Country Offices to roll-out programmes related to the Global Foundational Literacy and Numeracy initiative.

    Training components and learning elements

    The intern would through practical application and coaching, develop skills in:

    • Knowledge management and use to impact practice
    • Networking and building partnerships
    • Research, data and analysis
    • Education technical areas
    • Communications and advocacy.

    Desired competencies, technical background and experience:

    1. Graduated within the past two years or currently enrolled in an advanced university degree in social science, education, economics, philosophy or another related field.
    2. Excellent written and oral English is required, and French of Portuguese is an added bonus for our region.
    3. Excellent day-to-day computer literacy, with knowledge of data analysis IT tools.
    4. Experience of working in complex bureaucracies and multicultural environments would be an advantage.
    5. Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to contribute to a team
    6. Excellent interpersonal and networking skills.
    7. Orientation to innovate and see impact in innovations.
    8. Ability to work independently and respond to feedback in a timely and professional manner.

    UNICEF has a zero-tolerance policy on conduct that is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the United Nations and UNICEF, including sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, abuse of authority and discrimination. UNICEF also adheres to strict child safeguarding principles. All selected candidates will be expected to adhere to these standards and principles and will therefore undergo rigorous reference and background checks. Background checks will include the verification of academic credential(s) and employment history. Selected candidates may be required to provide additional information to conduct a background check.

    Stipend:

    In accordance to UNICEF's guidelines, all interns must receive a stipend, and in this case the full stipend shall be covered by UNICEF. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

    Insurance:

    UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern's service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work. If accepted, the intern will be required to provide a copy of health insurance coverage and to fill out the relevant UNICEF forms on conditions regarding service as an intern.
