    Senior Legal Counsel East Africa

    The main purpose of the role is to provide legal services to all DHL entities throughout Eastern Anglophone Africa in order to minimise the risk of legal exposure in key activities relating to commercial and operating practices. You will support the Head of Legal for the region and representing the company in all aspects of legal requirements to ensure that company processes & procedures comply with local & international legislation & standard corporate practices, in particular competition compliance and data protection. 

    Main Responsibilities:

    • Provide risk analysis with respect to legal and commercial matters to ensure preventative measures are taken so as to protect the legal and commercial interests of the company.
    • Liaise with external legal counsel across region to handle legal matters in various areas of the law including finance, insurance, general corporate, litigation, regulatory matters, human resources and commercial/corporate.
    • Ensure departmental visibility and control of various legal matters across region. 
    • Draft & review contracts & other legal documents, providing professional guidance and training to minimise legal exposure to the company.
    • Provide professional advice & guidance to involved parties in order to maximise the legal operating practices of the company. 
    • Ensure company is kept informed of any substantial legal changes that may have an impact on the commercial performance of the company.
    • Produce regular & ad-hoc reports & other administrative assistance within the Legal department.  
    • Manage enquiries & provide data to international departmental functions as required.
    • Carry out tasks as required in order to support legal department team members and business units

    Dimensions:

    • 13 countries
    • 10-30% travel post Covid
    • No direct reports
    • No budgetary responsibility 

    Required Experience:

    • Bachelor Degree in Law; 8 years PQE from a reputable university; or Juris Doctor with at least 10 years experience.
    • High degree of personal integrity; 
    • Essential to have good commercial/corporate awareness;
    • Fluency in English: Written and Spoken; fluency in French desirable;
    • Interpersonal skills; 
    • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the business;
    • Attention to detail;
    • Able to act within several legal facets.
