    Technologist

    JOB PURPOSE

    Working as part of the Amnesty Tech's Security Lab, the Technologists will conduct research on surveillance technologies and help develop tools and technologies to protect human rights defenders from unlawful surveillance. 

    The technologists will join at a time of expansion for the Security Lab as it grows to face the increased challenges presented by surveillance technologies to the work of human rights defenders around the world. This is an exciting time to be joining a growing team that has a track record of high impact research and campaigning.  

    ABOUT YOU

    You will have experience conducting research and investigations into surveillance technologies, with the ability to deal in a sensitive and understanding manner with a variety of people, as well as familiarity with risk assessment methodologies and the ability to conduct them during investigations and research projects. You will use sound judgement and initiative to solve problems and provide constructive inputs. Development knowledge (preferably in python or go) would be beneficial. 

    MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Lead research on unlawful targeted surveillance against civil society and research into the surveillance industry.  
    • Track surveillance companies and technical infrastructure of spyware and phishing attacks against civil society.  
    • Assist Human Rights Defenders with digital security and forensics analysis of their devices
    • Collaborate with colleagues in the Disrupting Surveillance Team and other parts of the Amnesty movement to ensure that research supports the broader campaigning activities.  

    SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

    • Experience in technical investigations to track spyware or phishing campaigns, in threat intelligence and malware analysis  
    • Proven ability to investigate cyber-surveillance from state actors and the surveillance industry 
    • Solid knowledge in digital security and surveillance against civil society 
    • Existing record of publications on digital security or surveillance issues 
    • Ability to conduct research and investigations with emphasis on confidentiality and operational security
