QWETU Sacco was founded in 1968 by two hundred teachers who agreed to pool part of their Kshs.300/= salary to help each other to grow financially and socially. Now the Sacco has more than 28,000 members - not just teachers, but business people running successful businesses, civil servants, nurses and employees in major corporations all over Kenya. These members are benefitting from effective fixed savings accounts, loans that are multiple times their savings, holiday packages, school fees accounts and all this services have enabled them to improve their livelihoods.
Since inception, the society has undergone a series of transformational phases. First came the introduction of Front Office Service Activities (FOSA) in 2000. The opening of the Microcredit department in 2003 brought about the opening of the common bond. This meant that the Sacco became inclusive to members of the public who gained eligibility.
Additional branches were opened in Voi and Taveta the same year. QWETU identified the need to have another branch in Mwatate to efficiently serve their increasing clientele in that region. In 2013 the Sacco began operations there with the headquarters remaining in Wundanyi.
QWETU Sacco is governed by nine elected officials who are supervised by a supervisory committee made up of three members. The operations at the Sacco are run by an effective team of 63 able officials and 24 more as support staff.

Hospitability: This is best represented in their name Qwetu, which is a twist to the Swahili word Kwetu meaning home. A home where there is abundance of warmth, love and family.

Independent: Qwetu is free of political and partisan affiliations that would be used to influence how it is run from day to day.
