    Job Description

    The clerk (Labor monitor) will be responsible for monitoring study participants through labor process and document study data using appropriate study tools. They will also support Screening, consenting and enrolment of study participants as well as collection of relevant information to facilitate follow up and retention and ensure that these tasks conducted in the highest standards possible as per the FHU study protocols and GCP. S/he must be flexible and work within the existing structure, in a professional and ethical manner with competence, accountability and integrity.

    Specific Tasks and Responsibilities

    1. Follow up and track study participants due for delivery then plan for deliveries and data collection.
    2. Support monitoring study participants during labor in the respective facilities and record study labor and pregnancy outcome data.
    3. Collection of accurate intrapartum data from the study participants in line with the standards and guidelines set in the study protocol
    4. In coordination with community team and MOH team, schedule and prepare a work plan for phone calls, home follow up visits and reminders for scheduled intrapartum and related follow–up visits for participants
    5. Checking ANC/PNC registers to verify if all pregnant mothers can be approached and enrolled if eligible
    6. Administer the consenting process and enroll participants in the study.
    7. Taking a detailed locator for all the enrolled participants
    8. Ensure that all the relevant case reports and appointment cards are administered appropriately, and all research questions are asked when interviewing each participant
    9. Check questionnaires for accuracy and completeness at the end of interview sessions
    10. Keep clean and comprehensive records of study visits and their outcomes
    11. Conduct debriefing with each study participant at the conclusion of interviews
    12. Ensure that one has requisite supplies in time
    13. Adhere strictly to the project deadlines for completion of duties assigned
    14. Attend all the routine study meetings in time and with progress reports as appropriate

    Assistant Laboratory Technician

    Essential Requirements

    Senior Clinical Research Scientist (Pharmacist)

    Program description: This program is collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It involves conducting research and program support for activities related to malaria, HIV, Tuberculosis and other diseases. Due to its continued growth, the HIV Research Division has the following vacancy in the pharmacy unit.

    Essential requirements:

    1. Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy
    2. Master’s Degree in Pharmacy related field or Master’s Degree in Public Health.
    3. Licensed by the Pharmacy and poisons Board of Kenya.
    4. At least two years Clinical Research experience.

    Desired requirements:

    1. Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Human Subject Protection (HSP) in research.

    3. Position description: The Pharmacist will report to the division lead and will be responsible for investigational products management and accountability for the clinical research site.     1. Coordinate all issues related to investigational products importations, supply and preparation of all doses for administration/use to/by the study participants.
    2. Maintaining appropriate records of the receipt and disposition of investigational products and Inventory of all medicines.
    3. Maintain a system to monitor and document storage conditions for investigational products to ensure quality of the products is not compromised.
    4. Manage study participant randomization process where applicable and ensure compliance to assigned treatment groups.
    5. Maintains the blinding of the participant’s treatment assignment to investigators, study nurses, clinic staff and participant, where required.
    6. Maintains the confidentiality of the participant, participant’s pharmacy file and the study drug/placebo accountability record.
    7. Establishes a system to ensure that the participants sign an informed consent before dispensing the drugs and the current IRB approved version of the protocol is being followed when dispensing the investigational products.
    8. Prepares pharmacy related standard operating procedures ensuring they meet GCP, NIH and other regulatory requirements.
    9. Follows established departmental policies, procedures and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives and safety, environmental and/or infection control standards. Ensure compliance to established local and international pharmacy research standards and delivering acceptable monitoring reviews.
    10. Lead and/or support in the conduct of clinical, pharmaceutical or epidemiological research.
    11. Perform any other duty as assigned by the division lead.

    Project Description

    The Family Health Unit (FHU) is a section in the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR). FHU conducts Clinical and Epidemiological Research focusing on maternal and child health. Ongoing research conducted within FHU include the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) and Antenatal and Postnatal Care Research Collective
    (ARC) platform studies that seek to collect high quality and accurate information on pregnancy,
    COVID–19 prevalence in pregnancy and mitigating the impact of COVID–19 on maternal and new–born care.

    Reporting to: Study Coordinator

    Position Summary:

    The incumbent, working with study and MOH teams, will be responsible for performing ultrasound scans, training and mentoring frontline health providers to perform obstetric ultrasound for the FAMLI study and other studies in the ARC platform. This will entail performing scans and archiving images for the ARC studies and assisting the ministry of health staff to perform routine scans.

    Requirements:

    1. Diploma in Radiography with two years’ experience in Obstetric Sonography.
    2. A Higher National Diploma in Sonography will be an added advantage.
    3. Ability to work with multiple stakeholders including ministry of health staff.
    4. Licensed by the Kenya Radiation Protection Board.
    5. Strong technical, communication, interpersonal, and patient service skills.
    6. The ability to explain technical terms in a clear and understandable way.

    4. Training and mentoring health care providers (nurses, clinical officers) on obstetric ultrasound.
    5. Explaining sonographic procedures to patients, answering questions, preparing patients by applying the gel to the skin, and positioning the patients on the table.
    6. Selecting and examining images, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas, and determining if the scope of the exam should be extended, based on preliminary findings
    7. Presenting the sonograms and preliminary findings to the Physicians
    8. Completing the appropriate documentation and maintaining patients’ histories and medical records

    Background Information:

    The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), in collaboration with the University of Washington is currently conducting a research piloting HIV pre–exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) Integration into Services for Early Pregnancy Loss among Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in 4 health facilities (public and private) within Kisumu County. The PrEDIRA 2 Study is currently looking for a mature, motivated individual to fill in the following position:

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Register and consent study participants and assist with eligibility determination, screening and enrolment of study participants.
    2. Informed Consent administration per study protocol and collection of participant medical, surgical and reproductive history.
    3. Work in consultation with the study TAs in all steps above.
    4. Provide contraceptive counselling, HIV/AIDS counselling and testing and STI risk reduction assessment counselling and support.
    5. Pre–screening and screening of participants.
    6. Support in health talks to participants at the clinic and mobilization sources.
    7. Perform pelvic exams, cervical cancer screening, contraceptive counselling administration and removals.
    8. Respond to questions about the study posed by participants and the community in consultation with the study doctor.

    Qualifications

    1. Diploma in Nursing – Registered Community Health Nurse (KRCHN) with extensive and recent hands–on clinical experience.
    2. MUST be registered with the Nursing officer’s Council of Kenya.

    Required Experience

    1. More than two (2) years Clinical research experience.
    2. Knowledge of HIV prevention and treatment services.
    3. Good Clinical Practice training/Human Subjects Protection training in mental Health/Psychiatry Nursing, is an added advantage.
