    Communications Officer

    What are we looking for?

    • The Greenbelt Movement is in an exciting growth phase, expanding its work in Kenya and increasing its influence across Africa. GBM is looking for a Communications Officer with experience in environment sustainability, human rights and/or other social justice work. Reporting to GBM’s Head of Advocacy and Communications and working in collaboration with GBM staff, the officer will develop and implement traditional and social media plans and content about GBM’s key priorities including: GBM’s forest restoration projects, national and global advocacy including public interest litigation; relevant national law and policy; and campaigns at regional and global multilateral process on climate change and biodiversity protection. The candidate will also coordinate immediate and ongoing communications needs related to GBM’s website, newsletters and maintain databases for GBM members, regional media, allies and donors.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Maintain GBM’s website, social media and fundraising sites through daily monitoring, posting and content development in collaboration with programme staff
    • Working closely with the GBM programme team to ensure relevant programme materials are developed and disseminated through social media channels and/or to partner organisations directly
    • Support the programme staff in development of blogs, reports, and other publications and manage regular internal and public newsletter
    • Stay up-to-date on relevant news on traditional and social media and distribute among relevant staff members
    • Archive all communication materials, including digital, such as publications, press releases and clippings, photographs, audio- visual materials, web resources etc
    • Develop a communications calendar and contribute to the development of a media and communications strategy
    • Support the Head of Advocacy and Communications to coordinate special events, media engagements and campaigns through relevant communications tools, and to manage relationships and develop a database of media contacts
    • Support the Head of Advocacy and Communications to produce timely and quality production of advocacy and branding materials such as newsletters for internal and external distribution, annual reports, picture stories, videos
    • Support the Executive Director during fundraising or project design phases to identify appropriate communication activities for respective projects

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field
    • At least three years post-qualification experience doing similar work is required.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills required, and experience with print, audio and film story telling for advocacy
    • Demonstrated social media experience (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok use and analytics)
    • Excellent skills in website and social media management and analytics, design and layout skills and experience (Adobe Photoshop, PageMaker, Canva etc) and newsletter distribution
    • Fluent in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
    • Be a team player, driven self-starter who is reliable with excellent time management skills, ability to prioritise, pay attention to detail, and shows initiative at work

    Advocacy and Communications Manager

    What are we looking for?

    • The Greenbelt Movement is in an exciting growth phase, expanding its work in Kenya and increasing its influence across Africa and therefore seeks a dynamic and experienced Advocacy and Communications Manager. Building on the foundation set by Prof Wangari Maathai, the successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of an ambitious, high-quality and impactful advocacy and communications agenda based on the organisation’s strategic plan and priorities.

    Working with staff across the organisation, the successful candidate will play a leading role in developing and implementing credible advocacy strategies that leverage the strength of Greenbelt Movement’s brand in the media, use cutting edge digital campaign tactics to build in support of GBM’s advocacy strategy, and provide opportunities for GBM staff and partners to take effective online and offline actions in support of the organisation’s mission and objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Strategic Planning and Project Development

    • Lead engagement in national, regional and international mechanisms
    • Deliver a range of influencing activities including organizing events, publishing op-eds, position papers and briefings, convening policy dialogues with policymakers, etc.
    • Follow key influencing processes and provide briefings and updates as required to relevant GBM staff and partners.
    • Map out key influencers that GBM should engage with, working closely with relevant partners and strategic allies.
    • Represent GBM and engage with a range of key external stakeholders, including government officials, regional and global institutions, think tanks, academics, private sector and other key advocacy audiences.
    • Draft and communicate analysis and insight of key policy and political trends and issues for internal and external audiences.
    • Support GBM staff capacity strengthening for increased engagement with national, regional and global mechanisms.
    • Work with the GBM programs team to deliver the overall advocacy strategy and organizational priorities.
    • Track, monitor and evaluate GBM’s influencing strategies and contribute to team planning, budgeting, and annual reporting.

    Project Management and Implementation

    • Build relationships with relevant ministries, government agencies and legislators in Kenya
    • Support partner efforts towards county- and national-level legislative and policy processes in the focal counties
    • Coordinate strategic advocacy partnerships for purposes of implementation
    • Undertake research to document and expose environmental violations to communicate impact of our work.
    • Develop project agreements, as needed, and monitor activities and expenses relating to them.

    Communications

    • Supervise the maintenance of GBM’s website, social media and fundraising sites through regular monitoring, posting and content development in collaboration with programme staff.
    • Supervise the development of videos, newsletters, blogs and op-eds, and annual reports, with the support of the programme staff.
    • Remain up to date and distribute relevant news items to the leadership team and programme staff
    • Supervise media engagements, manage relationships and develop and grow a database of media contacts
    • Supervise special events, meetings and campaigns through relevant communications tools, including publications, flyers, blogs, or online campaign strategies

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • Degree in communications, journalism, public relations, law, environmental science, international relations, or other relevant degree required with 6 – 8 years professional and/or relevant experience.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in implementation of advocacy projects
    • Knowledge of and experience in national, regional and global environmental law and policy, especially the climate change and biodiversity discourse in multi-stakeholder platforms
    • Excellent analytical and strategic skills to determine and respond to fast-moving organisational, political, policy and media agendas, including the proven ability to “think on your feet and outside the box” and present well under pressure.

    Demonstrable Experience in:

    • Successfully achieving advocacy objectives and achieving policy change, in the context of NGO influencing agenda.
    • Designing and delivering successful advocacy strategies, including digital campaigning
    • Strategic understanding of political trends, opportunities, and challenges in national and international landscapes
    • Stakeholder mapping and strategizing according to the policy objectives of different projects
    • Leading or coordinating national or international campaigns at a senior level.
    • Training staff and other stakeholders on emerging issues in communications and how to harness opportunities in digital narrative advocacy, strong presentation skills, branding, etc
    • Operational management, including experience in developing, monitoring and managing a large, complex budget and experience in reporting performance against plans to a range of audiences.
    • Ability to travel locally and internationally and, when required, to work outside normal office hours.

    Finance Manager

Based in Nairobi, he/she will report to the Executive Director. The Manager will work closely with the senior leadership team; will be responsible for delivering the finance strategy of the organization. He will be responsible for the finance strategy planning, development, tracking and reporting, provide financial advice and support to partners and colleagues to enable them to make sound business decisions, ensure Smooth running of finance function as well as sound finance operating procedures and processes. The manager will also be responsible for providing leadership to the Finance team. The Manager will uphold and exemplify The Greenbelt Movement, its vision, mission, values and objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Planning and Development

    • Take responsibility for overall management and delivery of the financial plan for GBM.
    • Providing and interpreting financial information;
    • Monitoring and interpreting cash flows and predicting future trends;
    • Formulating strategic and long-term business plans;
    • Developing financial management mechanisms that minimize financial risk;
    • Conducting reviews and evaluations for cost-reduction opportunities;
    • Managing GBM’s financial accounting, monitoring and reporting systems;
    • Liaising with auditors to ensure annual monitoring is carried out and audits are done in a timely manner;
    • Developing external relationships with appropriate contacts, e.g. auditors, solicitors, bankers and statutory organizations.
    • Producing accurate financial reports to specific deadlines;
    • Coordinate the preparation budgets based on GBM’s strategic work plans and continuous monitoring and management of these budgets in liaison with Program team
    • Maintain appropriate relations with donors and all stakeholders by preparing reports as necessary, ensuring compliance with any contracts.

    Financial management

    • Maintain day-to-day financial control within budgets.
    • Ensure that all finances are properly administered and monitored, including credit control.
    • Ensure that appropriate financial regulations and controls are in place and in use at all times.
    • Prepare and review detailed budgets for approval by the Board in conjunction with the Executive Director and Finance Committee.
    • Ensure Monthly Reconciliation of bank statements by comparing statements with cash and bank register for all GBM bank accounts. This also includes reconciliations and reporting on Mpesa account.
    • Maintain up to date vote book for every project budget line
    • Submit monthly, quarterly project financial reports. Ensure that all financial reporting obligations are met in relation to submissions for funding, for grant aid, for contracts and any other initiatives.
    • Support the Executive Director in the provision of information for the estimates.
    • Advise on the proper allocation of resources.
    • Plan and direct short-term and long-term financial goals of the organization. Provide financial direction, planning and accounting to the Organisation.
    • Oversee that all finance and accounting functions including budgeting, asset management, cashflow management, management reporting, payroll administration, in accordance with the accepted accounting principles, policies & procedures of GBM and all other applicable laws and guidelines.
    • Ensure all Accounting, Reporting and Tax areas of the organization comply with regulatory environments and that reports are prepared in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles, and accurately present the financial condition and results of operations of the organization
    • Ensure that appropriate financial infrastructure is in place to support the provision of GBM’s services to its staff and partners in line with the organizations requirements.
    • Monitor and ensure that the organization and other resources are safeguarded and it does not suffer financial loss through theft, fraud or error by maintaining strong internal systems and controls
    • Identify and formulate strategies to effectively and efficiently manage the cash and liquid assets of the Company.
    • Forecast cash flow requirements in consultation with the Executive Director.
    • Maintain & operate bank accounts of the organization to ensure efficient management of financial resources
    • Plan and establish the organizations budget and take charge of management reporting.
    • Establish and prepare accurate and timely information for budget monitoring and progress reporting for program funds & grants
    • Maintain accurate accounting databases
    • Manage and direct the Finance team including: hiring, setting performance standards, coaching, appraising and motivating.
    • Protect organization's value by keeping information confidential

    Requirements:

    • A minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, economics, accounting, finance or related field and a CPA (K) or ACCA finalist qualification is required. A Masters’ degree in finance is an added advantage.
    • At least 10 years’ experience in a financial monitoring role with at least 5 years in a Finance Leadership role or similar position in the NGO environment.
    • Knowledge of leadership and management principles as they relate to non-profit/ voluntary organizations
    • People Management, Financial and Project management skills
    • A comprehensive knowledge of rules, regulations and policies that govern management of grants and cooperative agreements a must.
    • Working knowledge of computerized accounting and other computer application packages is mandatory.

    Human Resources and Administration Manager

    What are we looking for?

    • The Greenbelt Movement is in an exciting growth phase, expanding its work in Kenya and increasing its influence across Africa. GBM seeks a full-time Human Resources and Administration Manager. Based in Nairobi, he/she will report to the Executive Director. The Manager will be a human resources generalist who, working with the senior leadership team, will be responsible for delivering innovative and strategic people solutions. He/she will act as an employee champion and change agent through anticipation of human resources-related needs and formulating strategies to deliver value added services to management and employees that reflect the objectives of the organization. The manager will also be responsible for the administrative functions of the organization, including supervising procurement and other general support staff. The manager will uphold and exemplify The Greenbelt Movement, its vision, mission, values and objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    Recruitment:

    • Initiate transparent and competitive recruitment and selection processes (from the review of job descriptions to the screening of candidates) as well as ensuring the timely management of the process.
    • Provide advice on recruitment and selection processes in line with corporate guidelines and policies, leading to the timely sourcing, selection and placement of the required talent.
    • Provide advice on effective succession management and workforce planning through timely and accurate projection of vacancies and staffing requirements

    Performance Management

    • Provide advice on the performance management and development process and regularly monitor completion rates, providing updates to senior management.
    • Work with head of departments to develop and or update key performance indicators and ensure timely appraisals are done
    • Facilitating trainings to embrace a performance management culture in the organization.

    HR Advisory

    Strategy

    • Support the organization with organizational design processes.
    • Assist with planning, formulation and implementation of an effective HR strategy aligned to overall GBM strategy
    • Provide strategic guidance and coaching to guide senior management on varied HR matters

    Requirements:

    • Degree in human resources management, business administration or higher diploma in similar field
      Membership with IHRM or relevant professional body preferred.
    • At least five years’ working experience in a similar role, preferably with an international or local NGO and good knowledge of HR best practices and standards.
    • Excellent experience in and knowledge of labour laws, regulations, policies, principles, concepts, and best practices.

    Program Manager

    • Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Manager works closely with and provides guidance to the program team. The key components of the role include supporting effective implementation of current programs, providing technical guidance to the programs team, contributing to strategy implementation and its further development; leading program development in new areas of work, and supporting fundraising. The successful candidate will be based in Nairobi, with frequent local and occasional international travel.

    Key roles and responsibilities:
    Program Strategy

    • Contribute to the development of GBM’s strategy and operationalized through a relevant and coherent body of work with due emphasis on feasibility, sustainability, and financial viability.
    • Provide input, guidance and thought leadership on program implementation, develop new areas of programming, and ensure the programs continue to be responsive to the broader current and evolving contexts while remaining true to GBM’s overall mission and vision.
    • Work with the programs teams, other colleagues at GBM as appropriate to ensure the ongoing delivery of robust programs strategy which is rooted in the needs and priorities of communities and the best practice and in line with GBM vision and mission.

    Technical Oversight to Programme Delivery

    • Work with ED to provide thought leadership and oversight of all programmatic work in accordance with GBM’s vision/mission with an eye towards long term effective implementation and sustainability.
    • Ensure GBM is providing thought leadership in the land restoration, reforestation and sustainable development sectors nationally, regionally and globally.
    • Lead and deliver quality project cycle management, including situation analyses; project and partner identification; project design, budgeting and resource mobilization, negotiation and contracting; baseline and planning; monitoring; timely and accurate financial and narrative donor reporting; evaluation and audit; and dissemination of lessons learned.
    • Provide sound technical advice is offered to local tree nursery groups and relevant stakeholders in alignment with program-specific documents.
    • Keep track of the financial status of the Programme and overall tracking of the performance of grants in your program
    • Regular monitoring and evaluation of the programs performance to identify any gap and take the appropriate measures timely
    • Provide timely submission of program reports to the ED.
    • Support the development of the partnership network of civil society organizations, governments, research institutions, technical experts, and donors; support maintenance and Develop and nurture beneficial partnerships, alliances and policy /technical resources
    • Remain informed on current policy debates and engage in relevant fora to ensure GBM’s strategy remains innovative and GBM’s work is distributed in relevant policy circles.
    • Work with the GIS and M&E teams to ensure effective monitoring, evaluation and learning.
    • Communications and Advocacy
    • Work closely with the communications and advocacy team to ensure effective communications about the programs.
    • Work with communications team to ensure GBM is effectively represented in national, regional and global forums and remains relevant to policy debates and processes
    • Work closely with the communications and advocacy team to ensure the development and dissemination of strong content in all GBM platforms.
    • Create and participate in networks with relevant stakeholders in Kenya and the region.
    • Resource Mobilization & Donor relations
    • Support the ED in identifying fundraising needs and developing the annual budget. Develop quality funding proposals and bids and their negotiation.
    • Work to heighten GBM profile and its credibility in the environmental conservation sector and forums
    • Support in attracting support to the program's portfolio through liaison with existing and potential implementation partners and peers, technical support and research agencies and institutions, donors and policymakers. Provide regular updates to relevant stakeholders and donors on work progress and involve them in ongoing work.
    • Maintain awareness of key donors and other important stakeholders policy priorities, procedures and preferred technical approaches as well as funding or other business opportunities which they may afford
    • Support the ED to donors, partners, governments, peers, and experts at all levels and support beneficial institutional linkages.

    People Leadership

    • Contribute to the overall management and direction of the organization in support of the executive director and as a part of the senior management team
    • Provide technical leadership to program team resource ensuring high quality performance of the staff nurturing engaged workforce and ensuring effective coordination and collaboration between the various project components.
    • Manage, motivate, facilitate and support the personal development and performance of programs team members, including through appraisal, coaching, individual and team training, exchange of experience, and facilitating participation in appropriate meetings and seminars
    • Ensure that the work environment is healthy, motivating, empowering and synergistic

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, forestry, law, public policy or other relevant science or social science field. Advanced degree an advantage.
    • At least 10 years of demonstrated work experience, at least 5 of which should be in program leadership level experience in similar nongovernmental organization
    • Excellent track record in program management, including project planning, budgeting, implementation and monitoring and evaluation.

    Executive Director

    What are we looking for?

    • The Greenbelt Movement is in an exciting growth phase, expanding its work in Kenya and increasing its influence across Africa. We now seek to hire an Executive Director who has the capacity, vision and dedication to lead a passionate workforce in various counties in Kenya and guide the development and implementation of a new, innovative 3-5 year strategic plan.
    • The successful candidate will have extensive experience in economic, environment, social development and or human rights and is passionate about supporting local communities develop solutions to address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. They will have leadership experience with a non-profit organization in Africa and proven experience in administration, finance, operations, and fundraising. Based in Nairobi with frequent local and international travel, the successful candidate will provide leadership and oversight on all Greenbelt Movement key functions (programmatic, financial and operations) to both scale its impact and ensure the organization’s sustainability.

    Key Responsibilities

    In close collaboration with the Board of Directors and the Senior Leadership Team, the successful candidate will:

    • Develop and implement short and long-term strategic plans for The Greenbelt Movement in accordance with the organization’s systems, policies, and governance framework.
    • Lead fundraising efforts through engaging with current and prospective donors and supporting the board of directors to raise funds for organisation through presentations, roadshows and other events
    • Provide leadership to the achievement, evolution and implementation of the Greenbelt Movement’s mission-aligned growth strategies. As the head of the leadership team, drive organisational success through exceptional leadership and alignment with GBM’s mission, vision and values to foster the work culture, creating a positive and constructive environment for all employees.
    • Take charge the development of teams to successfully execute GBM’s program and operational strategies
    • Develop and maintain positive, trust-based relations with key internal and external stakeholders, including the board of directors, the senior leadership team, NGO peers, existing and prospective donors and other third parties.
    • Guide and strengthen GBM accountability mechanisms and ensure policies and guidelines are aligned to best practices. Assure continuous monitoring, review, reflection and impact assessment.

    Reporting to The Greenbelt Movement board as required, providing insights and strategic advice

    Qualifications and Experience

    • A Postgraduate degree in Environmental Science, Law, International Relations, International Development or other relevant science or social science discipline.
    • At least 10 years of management level experience with at least 5 years in a senior leadership position with a non-profit organization; experience in managing organisations through a change process is beneficial.
    • Experience in locally-led land restoration, reforestation and livelihoods development and or the broader social justice sector e.g. food security, conservation, human rights, women rights etc is required. Knowledge of local and global carbon markets and the related opportunities to create value for local communities in the forestry and land sector is an added advantage.
    • Proven success in developing and executing strategies to achieve short and long-term goals
    • Experience in fundraising is required, with the ability to demonstrate fundraising success in previous professional setting
    • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to adapt, inspire and engage a group of skilled professionals and help build a collaborative team culture;
    • Proven ability to align organisational vision, values and strategy with team goals, actions, and performance
    • Capacity to work transparently and cooperatively with county and national governments
