    Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) is a government parastatal under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives. The Institute was established on 2nd May 2002 upon the coming into force of the Industrial Property Act 2001. Previously the Institute existed as Kenya Industrial Property Office (KIPO), which was established in February 1990 after enactment of the Industrial Property Act, CAP 509 of the Laws of Kenya.

    Manager – Trade Marks

    GRADE KP ‘3’ (REF NO. KIPI/ADM/HR/TM/2021/3)

    Basic Salary Scale: Ksh. 133,500.00 p.m. – Ksh. 247,700 p.m.
    Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable
    House Allowance: Ksh. 60,000.00 p.m.
    Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 20,000.00 p.m.
    Medical cover: As per KIPI’s Medical Policy
    Leave Allowance: As per KIPI Human Resource Manual, 2016
    Annual Leave: 30 days per financial year
    The Manager – Trade Marks shall be responsible to the Deputy Managing Director, Technical Services.

    (a) Duties and responsibilities

    • Formulating and implementing Trade mark Division Operational policies, plans, procedures and rules;
    • Setting and ensuring achievement of performance targets in the Trade Marks Division;
    • Monitoring, evaluating and controlling performance of the Trade Marks Division;
    • Undertaking training needs assessment for staff in the Division and submitting to the Human Resource Advisory Committee for consideration;
    • Supervising, appraising and developing staff of the Division;
    • Overseeing compilation and dissemination of industrial property rights information;
    • Recommending amendments and reviews to the Trade Marks Act and Rules, Trade Mark Manual and Geographical Indication Act where appropriate in consultation with the Legal Services Division;
    • Supervising preparation of certificates;
    • Facilitating research in the field of industrial property in consultation with the Research, Innovation & Industrial Property Information Division;
    • Managing performance targets; and
    • Any other duty that may be assigned.

    Requirements for appointment

    For appointment to this grade, an Officer must have: -

    • A Master’s Degree in Science, Law, Economics, Commerce, Intellectual Property or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution;
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Law, Economics, Commerce, Intellectual Property or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution;
    • Satisfactorily served as an Assistant Manager, Trade Marks or a comparable position with similar responsibilities for a minimum period of three (3) years in the Public Service;
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of industrial property rights; and
    • Computer competency.

    Senior Trade Mark Examiner

    GRADE ‘5’ (REF.NO. KIPI/ADM/HR/TM/2021/5)

    TWO (2) POSITIONS

    Basic Salary Scale: Ksh. 84,500.00 p.m. – Ksh. 173,800.00 p.m.
    Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable
    House Allowance: Ksh. 45,000.00 p.m.
    Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 12,000.00 p.m.

    Leave Allowance: As per KIPI Human Resource Manual, 2016
    Annual Leave: 30 days per financial year
    The Senior Trade Mark Examiner shall be responsible to the Assistant Manager, Trade Mark

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Conducting searches on availability and registrability of trade marks and geographical indications;
    • iExamining applications for trade marks and geographical indications;
    • Review decisions made by Examiners under him/her;
    • Advising clients and responding to enquiries on trade mark and geographical indications matters; and
    • Any other duty that may be assigned.

    Requirements for appointment

    For appointment to this grade, an Officer must have: -

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Law Economics, Commerce or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution;
    • Satisfactorily served as Trade Mark Examiner or a comparable position with similar responsibilities for a minimum period of three (3) years in the Public Service;
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of Industrial Property Rights;
    • A management and leadership course lasting not less than four (4) weeks; and
    • Computer competency.

    Trade Mark Examiner

    GRADE ‘6’ (REF.NO. KIPI/ADM/HR/TM/2021/6)

    FOUR (4) POSITIONS

    Basic Salary Scale: Ksh. 71,500.00 – Ksh. 149,500.00 p.m.
    Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable
    House Allowance: Ksh. 35,000.00 p.m.
    Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 8,000.00 p.m.
    Medical cover: As per KIPI’s Medical Policy
    Leave Allowance: As per KIPI Human Resource Manual, 2016
    Annual Leave: 30 days per financial year
    The Trade Mark Examiner shall be responsible to the Senior Trade Mark Examiner.
    This is the entry and training grade for Trade Mark Examiners.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Advising clients and responding to enquiries on trade mark procedures;
    • Ascertaining classification and identification of goods and services;
    • Conducting trade mark searches;
    • Examining applications for registrations of trade marks;
    • Classifying trade marks according to Nice and Vienna Classification; and
    • Any other duty that may be assigned.

    Requirements for appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a person must have: -

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Law, Economics, Commerce or equivalent qualifications from a recognised institution; and
    • Computer competency.

    Patent Examiner

    GRADE ‘6’ (REF.NO. KIPI/ADM/HR/PA/2021/6)

    THREE (3) POSITIONS

    Basic Salary Scale: Ksh. 71,500.00 p.m. – Ksh. 149,500.00 p.m.
    Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable
    House Allowance: Ksh. 35,000.00 p.m.
    Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 8,000.00 p.m.
    Medical cover: As per KIPI’s Medical Policy
    Leave Allowance: As per KIPI Human Resource Manual, 2016
    Annual Leave: 30 days per financial year
    The Patent Examiner shall be responsible to the Senior Patent Examiner.
    This is the entry and training grade for Patent, Utility Models and Industrial Design Examiners.

    (a) Duties and responsibilities

    • Examination of patent, utility model and industrial design applications for compliance with formality requirements as provided under the Industrial Property Act;
    • Classification of applications according to International Patent Classification System (IPC) and Locarno Classification System;
    • Conducting patent, utility model and industrial design searches and provide technical advice to the public;
    • Substantive examination of patent and utility model or industrial design applications; and
    • Any other duty that may be assigned.

    Requirements for appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a person must have: -

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Information Communication or physics or equivalent qualifications from recognised institution; and
    • Computer competency.

    Patent Assistant I

    GRADE ‘8’ (REF.NO. KIPI/ADM/HR/PA/2021/8)

    TWO (2) POSITIONS

    Basic Salary Scale: Ksh. 49,000.00 p.m. – Ksh. 105,500.00 p.m.
    Terms of Service: Permanent and Pensionable
    House Allowance: Ksh. 16,500.00 p.m.
    Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 5,000.00 p.m.
    Medical cover: As per KIPI’s Medical Policy
    Leave Allowance: As per KIPI Human Resource Manual, 2016
    Annual Leave: 30 days per financial year
    The Patent Assistant I shall be responsible to the Senior Patent Assistant.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Maintaining records and ensuring proper maintenance of filing system;
    • Maintaining and updating registers;
    • Preparing certificates;
    • Preparing data for publication;
    • Verifying captured data and records for accuracy; and
    • Any other duty that maybe assigned.

     Requirements for appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a person must have:

    • SatiSfactorily served in the grade of Patent Assistant II for a minimum period of three (3) years;
    • A Certificate in Records Management from a recognised Institution; and
    • A Certificate in Intellectual Property.
