    Community Based Counsellor

    REPORTING LINES:

    Post holder reports to: Assistant Programme Officer

    Staff reporting to this post: None

    RCK PURPOSE: To safeguard and protect the rights and dignity of forced migrants and host communities through provision of legal aid, psychosocial support, advocacy, capacity building and promotion of inclusive governance. We envision an environment where forced migrants and host communities access rights, justice, protection, and durable solutions.

    JOB PURPOSE: To provide psychological first aid to the persons of concern including refugee/asylum seekers and host communities, particularly survivors of sexual and gender based violence, and other clients in the locality and at police stations per the terms of reference and guidelines.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To provide counselling and carry out other immediate interventions on cases and/or gathering the necessary information and referring the matter to RCK.
    • •Submitting weekly counselling reports.
    • Conducting case interviews and obtaining biographical and demographical information on refugees and asylum seekers as instructed by the Assistant Programme Officer.
    • Identifying vulnerable clients and referring the cases falling within RCK’s legal and psycho-social mandate.
    • Accompanying vulnerable clients to different areas such as the police station or court where there is need.
    • Participating in ongoing projects in the other programmes, such as the advocacy capacity building workshops.
    • Doing home visits from time to time as instructed.
    • Mobilizing the community for mobile legal aid clinics and other community activities.
    • Participating in RCK’s legal and awareness forums and disseminate information to other refugees and asylum seekers in the community.
    • Carrying out any other duty as may be advised from time to time.

    QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • A high school certificate. Knowledge of English and Kiswahili is an added advantage.
    • Must be a resident of Eastleigh, Kitengela, Mihang’o/Njiru
    • MUST BE A REGISTERED REFUGEE WITH A REFUGEE ID CARD
    • Must have community leadership and mobilization skills.
    • Added advantages include a certificate or diploma in social work or counselling.

    Programme Officer – Research And Knowledge Management

    REPORTING LINES:

    Post holder reports to:        Executive Director with technical guidance from the Senior Programmes Officer

    RCK MISSION:  To safeguard and protect the rights and dignity of forced migrants and host-communities through provision of legal aid, psychosocial support, advocacy, capacity building and promotion of inclusive governance.

    JOB PURPOSE: Contribute to the achievement of RCK mission and vision through designing and delivering knowledge and research infrastructure for RCK that will allow the organization to gather, develop and share knowledge, evidence and good practices from RCK’s strategic interventions and priorities.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Manage and coordinate the Research and Knowledge Management Program as well as lead and represent the Programme in all RCK activities.
    • In charge of developing and managing RCK’s research efforts by conducting research, situational analysis and compiling evidence from existing national, regional and global resources to guide RCK in its programmatic and policy work.
    • Identify key knowledge gaps in RCK’s key focus areas and advise the management on key interventions to address the gaps.
    • Work proactively with RCK programme teams to identify opportunities for documenting and sharing good practices, success stories, lessons learnt, milestones and results, internally and to RCK’s external stakeholders
    • Produce analytical and policy papers including the Refugee Insights magazine in order to share knowledge
    • Engage and create collaboration with policy research oriented networks and academia for data analysis, advice and peer review.
    • Collaborate with management to develop and implement an effective communications strategy based on the RCK target audience.
    • Write, edit and distribute content including daily media monitoring, publications, annual reports, speeches, website content and other materials communicating the organization’s activities and services to forced migrants and host communities.
    • Develop a draft of standards of performance for any RCK research.
    • Provide technical guidance to RCK programme teams on how to collect practical and action oriented data and knowledge in relation to RCK’s work and changing context
    • Ensure validation of knowledge by partners and key stakeholders so as to strengthen RCK’s knowledge products, policy papers and programmatic interventions.
    • Draft and provide technical input to project progress reports, annual reports and work plans
    • Work closely with the Executive Director in responding to media inquiries, external communication and arranging for media interviews.
    • Establish and maintain RCK media contacts.
    • Manage RCKs social media accounts and ensure that they are vibrant and active.
    • Conduct media sensitization on refugees through open days and media encounters
    • Assist the Executive Director to build RCK corporate identity through ‘standardization’ of all RCK information and publicity materials
    • Management and continuous building / expansion of the RCK resource materials.
    • Coordination of production of RCK publications, this included liaising with printers ensuring quality control and timely deliver to RCK offices.
    • Identifying potential local funds and participate in development of proposals
    • Attend workshops, conferences and meeting in this field and ensure the report from these activities are disseminated to other programmes.
    • Support in building/re-designing an M&E system in close cooperation with M&E Officer
    • Oversee the co-ordination of internal demonstration of implementation of the M&E system
    • Support the IT officer in implementation of daily duties
    • Participating in RCK’s Senior Management meetings
    • Supervision of RKM programme staff.
    • Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required, commensurate with your grade.

    QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    1.   Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Information Science, Human Rights, Development Studies, public administration, humanities and social sciences or related field.
    2. At least two (2) years’ experience in knowledge development and research, information, high level editorial work, management of social media in a similar role in an NGO or large organization.
    3. Experience in proposal and report writing.
    4. Excellent project management skills including demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities and multiple tasks.
    5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    6. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, content management systems and social media platforms.
    7. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Swahili.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Working conditions are normal for an office environment. Work requires flexibility in schedule and travel within the country and in the region. The job requires long hours and can be complex and stressful.

    Legal Intern

    RCK PURPOSE: RCK is a national NGO that was established in 1998 in response to the increasingly complex refugee situation in Kenya. RCK’s mission is to protect and promote the rights and dignity of refugees, IDPs and other forced migrants through enabling programs of legal aid, awareness creation and advocacy

    JOB PURPOSE: To provide legal advice and procedural support to the organization  on issues relating to and affecting the refugee community.

    REPORTING LINES: Post holder reports to: Assistant Program Officer –Legal and Psychosocial Support

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To offer legal services to asylum seekers, refugees, and members of the host community at RCK’s legal clinic, Kenya Prisons and Police Stations upon instructions by the Supervisor;
    • Conduct case interviews and obtain biographical and demographical information on refugees and asylum seekers and members of the host community while making relevant consultations with the programme;
    • Offer relevant legal and social advice to refugees and asylum seekers;
    • Identify needs and provide requisite support to refugees, asylum seekers, and members of the host community who visit RCK Legal clinic in consultation with programme staff;
    • Assist in the day to day running of the Legal Clinic by helping in registration of clients, filing and keying in client information in the data base and any other duties that might be delegated; and
    • Participate in RCK’s ongoing projects in other programmes, such as the advocacy campaigns, capacity Building workshops, and research projects when called upon.

    QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelors degree in Law
    • Experience in civil and criminal litigation is an added advantage.
    • Experience working with an NGO/Humanitarian field is an added advantage.
    • Fluency in English and Kiswahili.
    • Knowledge of the Kenyan legal system and of regional & international instruments on refugees and human rights.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Normal working hours are eight hours from 8am to 5 pm from Monday to Friday. This is an internship program that runs for 6 months.

    • Professionalism: In-depth theoretical knowledge of and significant experience in relevant fields of refugee law, Strong analytical, problem solving and drafting skills. Discretion and sound judgment in applying legal expertise to sensitive, complex legal issues.
    • Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication (written, spoken and presentational) skills. Proficiency in English and Kiswahili..
    • Technology Awareness: Fully proficient computer skills and ability to use relevant software applications, in particular information databases, internet/intranet services, library sources, etc.
    • Teamwork: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds with respect for diversity.
