    Manager – M-PESA Global Payments

    DESCRIPTION

    We are pleased to announce the vacancy for Manager – M-PESA Global Payments within Financial Services. In keeping with our current business needs, we are looking for a person who meets the criteria indicated below.

    Detailed Description

    Reporting to Senior Manager – M-PESA Universal Payments, the position holder will responsible for driving M-PESA online penetration by executing partnerships with relevant payment service providers as well as implementing the global payments strategy. This involves direct merchant business development to enable acceptance of M-PESA by global merchants. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in enabling M-PESA customers to transact online having a great impact on millions of customers, entrepreneurs and businesses.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Develop and manage the M-PESA Global Payments strategy from strategic planning through to tactical execution
    • Guide the business in the growth of M-PESA Global Payments
    • Support the execution of M-PESA Africa online payments strategy at both Opco and group levels
    • Coordinate the management of ongoing relationships with existing partners and where relevant, leverage those relationships to greater collective impact
    • Actively seek-out PSPs and pitch on M-PESA as the preferred payment option
    • Negotiate agreements with PSPs, working together with the respective legal teams
    • Manage the relationship with the PSP throughout integration and post-launch
    • Target top-online merchants to pitch the M-PESA Global Payments proposition
    • Work together with M-PESA teams to create right incentives for merchant acceptance of M-PESA Global Payments services
    • Support & guide integration process of the merchant, and post-live activation
    • Collect feedback from key stakeholders including customers, PSPs, merchants, etc. to improve M-PESA Global Payments services
    • Keep up to the latest trends to ensure M-PESA’s solution is at the forefront of user experience, safety and technical capability
    • Work with the relevant teams to enhance / develop the required solutions
    • Support the local markets in acquiring local SMEs online and providing them M-PESA Acceptance
    • Activate the local start-up scene to boost M-Pesa Acceptance
    • Drive commercial rationalization of the service roadmaps
    • Lead on best practice sharing and provide leadership within the M-PESA Teams.
    • Monitor market insights (market intelligence) and competitor activity within the payments sector to support overall business strategy and support decision making.
    • Working closely with the corporate security teams ensure proper due diligence and compliance monitoring on existing and new partners and payment processes
    • Drive deeper relationships with the regulator to ensure approval of new products and services in the M-PESA Global payments vertical
    • Monitor market insights (market intelligence) and competitor activity within the payments sector to support overall business strategy and support decision making.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Job Requirements

    • Relevant University Degree. 
    • 3 years of professional experience with at least 2 years in online payments – either from Merchant or Payment Service Provider
    • Strong knowledge on the way PSPs and merchants operate in online payments
    • Bonus: strong personal network of payment managers at top global merchants
    • International experience and multicultural sensitivity
    • Analytical bent of mind, structured thinker with strong business acumen

    M-Pesa Africa – Senior Manager, Business Payments Unit

    DESCRIPTION

    We are pleased to announce the subject career opportunity within Commercial (M-Pesa Africa) reporting to the Head of Commercial Strategy and Products.

    Role Description

    M-Pesa, is a pioneer and global market leader in mobile money. From starting in 2007 as a convenient means by which the unbanked and underbanked can send money digitally, M-Pesa has now grown to offer millions of customers financial services, enterprise, merchant, and retail solutions. We are proud of our work in enabling the digital economy in our markets, and in driving financial inclusion.

    M-Pesa is now doubling down on becoming the leading digital payment method across its markets, for both in-store, remote and online payments. The aim is to build compelling value propositions for customers to choose to pay with M-Pesa, and for businesses to accept M-Pesa as a payment method and use it in their operations.

    As the leader of the Business Payments Unit (BPU), you will be driving the business payments and acquiring strategy of M-Pesa Africa. You will be responsible for the overall BPU product development roadmap and the roll-out of solutions across all 7 of the M-Pesa Africa markets.

    Your key targets will include:

    • Driving growth in enterprise account penetration and usage across collections and disbursements use cases
    • Expanding merchant acquisition, especially outside of Kenya, through the development of compelling value propositions such as mini-apps, financial services, and other VAS.
    • Growing the penetration of the “Lipa” use case within the customer base, focusing on in-store payment and online payments
    • Driving online acceptance of M-Pesa as a payment method, both with international global merchants as well with local online merchants
    • Rolling out digital products such as the merchant app, portal, OpenAPIs, and others across all our markets
    • Designing and implementing customer and business rewards schemes to achieve the above-mentioned targets

    Why this role is tailored for you

    You will be leading a team of 3 commercial managers, as well as the product development roadmap implemented through the BPU Agile Release Train (ART), which is made up of 6 product owners and 6 technology squads. You will need to work closely with senior management colleagues across technology, compliance, legal and other verticals.

    You are expected to work together with the heads of M-Pesa and commercial counterparts in each of the local M-Pesa markets. You are expected to lead the sharing of best practices, contribute significantly to their local strategies, and ensure their full buy-in of the M-Pesa Africa BPU strategy and product roadmap.

    As part of the M-Pesa Africa Commercial Department, you will work closely with colleagues that are heading the M-Pesa consumer digital strategy, financial services, and core offerings such as IMT.

    You will play a pivotal role in enabling over 45M M-Pesa customers to pay for goods & services with M-Pesa and growing our base of over 200k businesses that accept M-Pesa.

    Key Role Responsibilities

    Lead BPU strategy and team development

    • Develop & update the overall strategy in close collaboration with the markets and senior management
    • Ensure buy-in from senior management and market heads
    • Translate the strategy into key partnerships, products, and initiatives
    • Build and lead the team to successfully achieve the set-out targets

    Drive the product roadmap

    • Lead the BPU Agile Release Train (ART), including 3 product managers, a total of 6 product owners, and 6 development squads
    • Grow the teams & resources based on requirements
    • Ensure customer-centricity in all product development
    • Embrace agile ways of working and ensure the full commitment of teams
    • Proactively engage with local markets and technology colleagues to ensure on-time and high quality delivered products.

    Spearhead innovative partnerships

    • Identify key commercial partnerships within the strategy framework
    • Develop partnerships and sign-off contracts
    • Ensure successful implementation of partnership
    • Maintain excellent relationships with the current array of partners

    Support M-Pesa market teams

    • Work closely with market leads on local strategies for payments
    • Ensure knowledge and best practice sharing between the markets, including chairing the monthly BPU steerco.
    • Ensure the overall product roadmap is tailored / or takes in to account the needs of the markets

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Apply if you have:

    • Bachelor’s degree, an MBA is preferred
    • At least 10+ years of professional experience with at least 4 years in digital payments and acquiring

    Detailed Description

    Reporting to Head of Department – M-PESA New Business Ventures, the position holder will be responsible for the managing universal payments propositions as well as execution of the strategy. Universal Payments includes and is not limited to global payments propositions, remittances, interoperable payments with universal payments service providers and relevant payment services beyond the M-PESA ecosystem. The incumbent will interact with all stakeholders with respect to universal payments i.e. the regulator, various strategic partners, consumer and merchant facing teams to ensure sustained growth while managing the contractual obligations and commercials. The incumbent will also ensure additional and adequate ongoing strategic and tactical focus on the proper execution of the overall universal payment’s strategy.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Develop and manage the overall Universal Payments strategy from strategic planning through to tactical execution
    • Support the execution of M-PESA Africa Payments strategy at both Opco and group levels
    • Develop new Business Models around Universal Payments that will ensure that Safaricom keeps its strategic focus of financial inclusion by exploiting new business opportunities beyond traditional and existing payment services
    • Embrace new-to-world technology and disruptive business models to ensure Safaricom remains Africa market leader in payments. Leverage technology to widen the current scope of payments on M-PESA towards driving Financial Inclusion
    • Own the product roadmap of the organization platform thinking holistically across the entire value chain to further the organization’s position in the market
    • Guide the business in the growth of Universal Payments within the Payments Ecosystem
    • Develop a strategic partnership framework that defines the contractual engagement for onboarding new partners and managing existing partners in the payment’s ecosystem
    • Work closely with existing and new partners to identifying opportunities that will ensure growth on revenue. Target, prospect, develop and strengthen partnerships with other organizations that enable to scale the financial services payments business
    • Ensure partners are fulfilling their contractual obligations and that the company is providing the required support for them to do so.
    • Maintain consistent communication and builds positive brand partner rapport
    • Responsible for initiating, negotiating terms, and maintaining the comprehensive partnerships and contractual agreement process
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to structure and execute business initiatives, lead analysis and develop and communicate final recommendations for growing partner relationships
    • Conceptualize new strategic initiatives that could be built around or benefit from the other partnerships.
    • Suggest and develop processes and services to improve operational efficiency between the partners
    • Engage with key influencers and decision makers across different teams to accomplish the partnership goals in the payment’s ecosystem
    • Be an expert in customer trends, stay informed of data-driven marketing news, emerging technologies and competitor offerings.

    • Collaborate with the relevant teams to develop marketing strategy and plans to grow the Universal Payments business
    • In liaison with the regulatory team drive deeper relationships with the regulator to ensure approval of new products and services
    • Ensure compliance with the National Payments Systems (NPS) Act and Money Remitters adherence to FATF recommendations and POCAMLA Act.
    • Facilitate a strong and open relationship with the regulator to ensure continual improvement with a better understanding of the regulatory expectations and regulatory agenda.
    • Coordinate responses to regulatory requests including consultation papers providing key stakeholders with advice and guidance on regulatory expectations.
    • Ensure statutory reports are duly submitted to the Central Bank of Kenya in an accurate and timely manner

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Job Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from a recognized university
    • A Master’s degree will be an added advantage
    • At least 6-8 years’ experience in a large corporate or multinational company, demonstrated progression and at least 3 years’ experience in a Telecommunications company handling partnerships, business development and strategy formulation.
    • Must have a good understanding of the payment/financial services market.
    • Must have excellent financial and analytical skills.
    • Must demonstrates an awareness of current events and trends.
    • Experience in management of budgets and forecasts in a large company
    • Track record of innovation and development of new products and services
    • Must demonstrate strategy execution/delivery
    • Financial Responsibility:
    • Responsible for the Universal Payments Revenue
    • Responsible for projecting expenditure – OPEX for  research , development and day to day running of M-PESA Universal Payments
    • Responsible for expending OPEX within approved limits
