    Interpreter, Russian, P4

    The post is in the Russian Interpretation Unit, Interpretation Section, Division of Conference Services, UNON.

    Responsibilities

    Under the broad supervision of the Senior Interpreter, the Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties:

    • Services up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration.
    • Provides interpretation, as required, into Russian of speeches or statements given in English and French and/or Spanish.
    • Routinely covers sensitive meetings.
    • Routinely functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting.
    • May be called upon to serve as Chief Interpreter on missions.
    • May assist in the screening, training and examining of prospective Russian interpreters.
    • May provide guidance and coaching to junior interpreters.
    • May function as Programming Officer.
    • May perform other related duties, as required.

    Education

    • A first level degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status is required.
    • Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Russian interpreters.

    Work Experience

    • At least five (5) years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required.
    • Experience providing accurate interpretation of a broad range of UN subjects is desirable.

    Project Engineer, Mechanical (Project Post), P4

    This position is located at the Design and Construction Section in United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). The Project Engineer, Mechanical reports to the Chief, Design and Construction Section for the UNON Conference Upgrade project, Division of Administrative Services, UNON and will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

    Responsibilities

    • Analyzes and advises on the planning, design, construction and maintenance of major systems and facilities such as buildings, roads, waste disposal systems, flood control systems, water treatment facilities, and related structures and other engineering activities in the field needed for the projects.
    • Evaluates, reviews and revises project documents, and analyzes design specifications included in project proposals for accuracy, soundness, feasibility and cost.
    • Reviews and submits for approval of the Chief, Design and Construction Section technical design drawings and specifications, owner's reports, monthly design and construction invoices, master cost breakdowns, general conditions estimates, and labor cost reports.
    • Reviews and approves weekly and monthly project reports from project design consultants and contractors.
    • Recommends solutions to unusual engineering problems.
    • Conducts technical studies on engineering topics, developing guidelines for the general planning and maintenance of programs and facilities.
    • Provides technical inputs regarding engineering design issues affecting proposed structures, taking into account such factors as estimated load, water pressure, wind resistance, soil characteristics, temperature fluctuations and nature of building materials to be used.
    • Keeps abreast, through relevant engineering literature, of significant trends and the development of improved methods and equipment.
    • Leads efforts of team studying critical problems relating to design or construction of systems and facilities. Makes recommendations for resolution of problems in specialized areas.
    • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
    • Participates in planning missions, serving as technical adviser to committees or international meetings.
    • Performs other related duties as required.

    Education

    • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Building Engineering, architecture or other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
    • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

    Work Experience

    • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or related area related to large-scale construction or renovation projects is required.
    • Experience in working with executive governance boards, public sector and/or external
    • audiences is desirable.
    • Experience in working on projects related to conference services, assembly facilities, convention centres or similar facilities is desirable.
    • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable
