• The Urban Sanitation and BDS Manager will provide leadership for a team of BDS and market-based sanitation experts working in two clusters of counties in western Kenya and will be based in Siaya.
• The manager will be team lead and build strategies for a sustainable and robust market and ensure an effective intersection of product offering, sales and marketing approaches, and an efficient delivery system. In addition, they will provide mentoring and business advice, such as training, sales supervision, marketing assistance, introducing innovative technology, and facilitating access to financing options to help small businesses improve their performance.
• The manager is responsible for the overall quality of the urban WASH activites in Western Kenya and bring expertise in business model development and experience supporting FSM service delivery models to be sustainable.
• The Urban Sanitaiton and BDS manager will also support institutionalizing such mentoring and coaching services in the local consulting sector or vocational colleges.
• The Manager of BDS has deep experience developing small businesses and entrepreneurs in developing countries, a passion for and a deep understanding of sustainability, knowledge sharing, capacity building, and a positive and action-oriented attitude.
• The Urban Sanitaiton and BDS manager contributes to shaping monitoring and evaluation for sustainability and measuring progress towards results, learning, documentation and knowledge management.

What are we looking for?

1. Bachelor’s Degree in sales, marketing, business administration, or related field;
2. At least ten years experience, with seven years in a position with similar responsibilities in helping businesses become more viable;
3. Goal focused with experience in the development, implementation, and execution of plans to grow small and medium-sized businesses;
4. Experience with urban sanitation and improving FSM service delivery
5. Understanding of Kenyan sanitation sector desirable;
6. Strong negotiation skills with a demonstrated track record of working with businesses and entrepreneurs;
7. Sales and marketing support supervision experience;
8. Creative thinker to see new routes to market and unique ways to develop existing opportunities; Knowledge and understanding of USAID relevant policies, goals, and strategies;
9. Excellent diplomatic, oral/written skills and presentation abilities;
10. Fluent in English (spoken and written);
11. Citizen of Kenya;
12. References will be required.

We are looking for a technical person, ideally from the engineering sector, to help the leadership of Western Kenya WASH team adhere to high standards of technical competence and quality in designing, improving, and promoting WASH-related products, service, and innovations. The civil engineer has strong communication and project management skills, and the ability to create and review technical specifications that translate into workable implementation solutions for urban, rural and peri-urban communities in Western Kenya.

Your contribution

• Under the supervision of the Market Based Sanitation Director, you will:
• Design and implement new product concepts to the rural and urban WASH market
• Prototype product concepts on field with consumers and local producers
• Make recommendations on technical appropriateness of proposed design concept
• Provide specification, design, bill of quantity and quality standards for new and existing WASH product concepts
• Develop technical training manuals and guidelines for WASH products
• Support project management related to product design and business model development
• Support institutionalization of technical training and quality control within government and private sector insitutions
• Travel to the field and review technical aspects of new product installation within communities/consumers
• Serve us a technical liaison for communication on technical aspects of WASH products

Your deliverables

• Technical design bill of quantity standard and specification
• Review reports with recommendations
• Technical training manual tailored to TOT trainings
• Prototype new product designs and pilot within users
• Technical quality assessment tools
• Program briefs, learning notes (in English), and other communication products
• Program reports (or sections)

What are we looking for? The basics

• MSc in Civil/Water Engineering or related fields.
• Minimum 7 years of civil engineering experience in WASH, preferably with a development organization.
• Demonstrated experience in technical quality assurance and improvement, with ability to document processes and systems in a digestible way and present them to management and staff.
• Experience with urban sanitation and improving FSM service delivery preferred.
• Citizen of Kenya;
• References will be required.
• Ability to live and work in Kisumu and surrounding counties
