Job Description
Based in SNV’s Nanyuki field office in Laikipia county, the Junior Consultant will support implementation of the LISTEN project activities and work with the Project Manager on water and livelihood resource management component and business cases development. She may be assigned other duties beyond the said project component as may be found necessary from time to time.
Scope of Work:
The Junior Consultant will work with the supervisor assigned to them on the following areas:
- Support project implementation activities working in partnership with the relevant county departments and focal stakeholders and partners in the project focus counties.
- Support relevant data collection, analysis and report development e.g. livestock value chain analysis and reporting.
- Support implementation of training of livestock community groups at the ward level and business cases that have a livestock management component.
- Support documentation the facilitation of workshops and exchange visits of the LISTEN project
- Support the review and establishment of livestock multistakeholder platforms (involving pastoralists & agro-pastoralists, conservancies, private sector, and government) to enhance coordination.
- Ensure close monitoring and follow up with the established livestock groups in the selected counties ensuring group progress, timely reporting and continued good rapport with county staff at the ward level.
- Support mapping of rangeland and grazing plans in the project’s target locations.
- Capturing and reporting on lessons learnt that contribute to knowledge development.
- Any other activity that may be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Degree in Livestock production, Rangeland Management or any other related field.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in livestock production, rangeland management or any other related fields.
- Experience working in Arid and semi-Arid areas in assignments related to livestock production and integrated Landscape Management.
- Good understanding of and experience with the participatory approaches in landscape & grazing management and drought resilient strategies in the context of pastoralist societies, herd mobility, resilience building, and sustainable utilization of natural resource.
- Demonstrated knowledge on value chain development strategies that reaches the women, youth and the poor
- Excellent research, report writing and presentation skills
- Experience working with local partners, government agencies and Community Based Organizations
- Previous work experience in the Ewaso Ngíro basin especially in Isiolo, Samburu and Laikipia counties is an added advantage.

Job Description
SNV is seeking a consultant for CRAFT-project. Overall, the consultant will conduct a gender-based value chain analysis on the gender-responsive climate smart agriculture practices and technologies in the four selected value chains (green grams, potato, sorghum and common beans) to aid in the development of an inventory of the practices and technologies. The consultant will Identify CSA practices and technology practised describing their application including costs incurred and benefits realized, identify the main barriers for adoption of climate smart technologies and approaches by smallholders and SME’s, and propose recommendations and approaches toward overcoming these barriers and most economically viable gender responsive CSA practices and technologies. The intervention should take into account the men, women and youths concerns, interests and context.
Objectives of the Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to identify a consultant who will support the project’s interventions and work together with the project team to implement the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion Strategy within the CRAFT project.
The specific objectives of the assignment are:
- To develop and implement gender strategies in businesses supported by the CRAFT project in Kenya based on the gender mapping and WEIA Survey results and the CRAFT GESI Strategy
- Conduct training for women and youth on opportunities in the provision CS technology and services
- Mentor and coach BCs on GESI mainstreaming - Undertake GESI training for BC
- Organize and facilitate Youth kick-off and women in leadership workshops for cooperatives and follow up on the youth kick-off workshop and formation of youth council including youth in climate action workshop.
Duration and Deliverables
The duration of the assignment is 6 months with the key deliverables as indicated below.
- An inception report demonstrating understanding of the tasks in the ToR and how they propose to accomplish the required tasks.
- Gender strategies for in businesses supported by the CRAFT project in Kenya developed.
- Training report of women and youth on opportunities in the provision CS technology and services
- Report on Youth kick-off and women in leadership workshops
Qualifications
- Master’s degree especially in Agriculture or related humanities with a bias in gender issues.
- Experience in gender mainstreaming in agricultural projects
- Experience preparing technical reports
