    Urban Biodiversity Expert

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties:
    • The overall role of this Consultant is to provide technical support to the Global Public Space Programme, particularly in the implementation of the green public space biodiversity assessment in San Jose, Costa Rica. This includes coordination (with the local and national government representatives, UN Resident Coordinator, and local partners), desk research, organizing and facilitation of workshops, and report writing. The detailed duties will be the following:
    • Support the geo-analysis work under the Green Public Space Biodiversity Assessment in San Jose project.
    • Coordinate and conduct Trainings to implementing partners and local teams liaising with academia, local governments and relevant stakeholders.
    • Participate in and engage in workshops and meetings related to the project.
    • Produce technical and normative reports, including spatial strategy, situational analysis, and guidelines for green areas and associated public spaces.
    • Support preparation of maps, graphics and statistics through collection, compilation, spatialization, analysis and interpretation of spatial data.
    • Attend meetings and events promoted by UN-Habitat and partners to strengthen the Programme’s presence.
    • Be responsible for maintaining an organized and accessible information database related to the project.
    • Provide recommendations for improvement/scaling up of the tool at the global level and integration with Hotspot Stoplight Methodology.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • A university degree in Geography, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies or related subjects is required.
    • At least two (2) years of experience working in urban planning and design with knowledge in geospatial analysis, mapping and cartography using GIS and CAD tools is required.
    • Experience and knowledge of data gathering, digitizing, cleaning, visualisation, analysis, management and report production is required.
    • Knowledge in urban biodiversity is desirable.
    • Experience in organizing and facilitating workshops is desirable.

    Intern - Data Analyst and Information Management

    • Regularly update database supporting the Donor Information Platform (DIP), ensuring data accuracy and integrating new information from various platforms. Provide support in cleaning and structuring organizational data related to grants and projects to ensure seamless integration into tools.
    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of existing DIP tools by identifying additional user needs and proposing tailored solutions.
    • Automate manual processes for the team and the organization using Power Automate or Python scripting, as needed. This includes developing workflows for repetitive tasks and creating tools to streamline data extraction, analysis and document generation processes.
    • Design and develop Power BI dashboards that integrate advanced data analysis, actionable insights, and impactful visualizations to meet analytical requirements and support organizational decision-making needs.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent),
    • Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
    • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    • Preferred areas of study: Computer science, data analytics, software development, information management, data science, or statistics, or other related fields. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.
    • However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

    Digital Participation Expert

    The detailed duties will be the following:

    • Facilitate training of trainings and community participation workshops using digital tools including Minecraft.
    • Produce high-quality digital models using Minecraft for community workshops.
    • Train UN-Habitat staff, implementing partners, community groups and target community members on the use of digital engagement tools.
    • Produce information and communications materials, including images and videos from each workshop.
    • Prepare a final report of each participatory design workshop.
    • Provide inputs into PFES publications and documents focusing on digital engagement and community participation.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Academic Qualification: A first-level university degree in information technology, gaming and animation technology, games programming, game design and development, multimedia design or related field that is relevant to urban planning, urban design, architecture, and sustainable urban development is required.
    • Work Experience: At least 2 years of relevant work experience using digital participation using Minecraft (including the production of models, server administration and community management) is required. Experience of producing advocacy and communications materials and facilitating workshops or teaching are desirable.
