    Program Assistant

    Job Description

    Through funding from ChildFund Korea (a member of ChildFund Alliance) ChildFund Kenya is implementing projects for poverty reduction and welfare improvement of communities in Turkana, Kajiado and Nairobi.  In order to effectively implement these projects, we are recruiting for the following positions:

    WASH and Nutrition Assistant (1 Position - Turkana)

    This project targets nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities within Turkana County with an overall aim of alleviating suffering and reduce water borne and diarrheal disease through WASH/Nutrition interventions.

    The successful candidate is expected to plan, develop, implement, monitor and evaluate the assigned WASH and Nutrition project, assess community WASH and nutrition needs, design interventions, initiate and effectively manage and report on the project in line with the project’s goals and objectives, timeframe and budget. Provide technical support and strategic direction; meet quality standards in WASH and Nutrition delivery, encourage beneficiary participation, liaise with other stakeholders and train Local Partner staff on WASH and Nutrition. This position reports to Program Manager –Turkana

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Participate in the WASH and Nutrition coordination mechanisms including, steering committees and working groups that coordinate and guide the nutrition sector response plans, operations and related activities at county level.
    • Manage the assigned WASH and Nutrition project to meet the project objectives within budget and allotted time frame.
    • Provide strong leadership of the assigned WASH and Nutrition project, working to ensure both short / long-term positive impacts and outcomes for the beneficiaries, local partners and local partner staff.
    • Ensure that the project adheres to set sector standards (donor, government, etc).
    • Support the application/ implementation and adherence to existing policies, strategies, standards and guidelines on WASH and Nutrition.
    • Implement participatory Behavior Change Communication methods targeting WASH and Nutrition behavior change.
    • Assist in documenting lessons learnt/good practices and other relevant reports for better WASH and Nutrition programming.
    • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of activities according to ChildFund Kenya, donor and other applicable timeframes and formats.

     Basic Requirements

    • A minimum BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics/Food Science and Nutrition/Technical qualification in Water and Sanitation
    • At least three (3) years continuous experience in WASH, Nutrition, Health and Community Development.
    • Proven experience of working with local partners in delivery of community based programs and good capacity building skills.
    • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and cross-cultural communications skills.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to prioritize, focus and deliver quality results within deadlines while meeting conflicting work demands and targets; working with or without teams with minimum supervision.
    • Experience in developing systems to capture and measure the impact of WASH and Nutrition activities.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with donor, project stakeholders, County collaborators and staff at all levels of the organization.

    Child Protection Assistant

    A Child Protection Officer supports field operations by providing technical assistance and guidance on child protection and enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of the formal Child protection systems service delivery through improved linkages to the community based child protection mechanisms (CBCPM).  He/She guides in the identification and screening of children with specific needs and makes sure that relevant child protection programmes are in place. Furthermore, he/she offers capacity building and evaluates child protection mechanisms. Child protection issues include, but are not limited to: birth registration, children with disabilities, unaccompanied and separated children, abused and neglected children etc. This position reports to respective Program Managers with day to day technical backstopping from the National Office Child Protection Specialist.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Mapping of child protection systems and development of a child protection strategy for the targeted area.
    • Ensure child protection risks and strategies are assessed on a regular basis.
    • Strengthening of child protection coordination mechanisms.
    • Identify protection issues and services that affect children at risk.
    • Design of child protection interventions.
    • Establish and support of monitoring and evaluate the child protection system in target areas.
    • Manage the project implementation plan and budget.
    • Coordinate community awareness creation activities 
    • Manage and supervise the Child protection officers  work to ensure efficient and quality service delivery
    • Regular field visits to monitor implementation of programs and to provide technical guidance.
    • Liaison with the Government, but specifically, the Children Department
    • Support of capacity building and training for Local Partner staff on child protection.
    • Coordinate with other agencies, governments and NGOs to implement and coordinate common standards.
    • Preparation of annual and donor reports as well as other documentation related to child protection programmes.

    Required qualifications and Experience

    • Professional technical experience matching the above-mentioned duties and responsibilities.
    • A minimum of 3 years working in projects that are donor funded with key Child Protection components
    • Demonstrated experience in report writing
    • Any documented evidence of community based child protection innovations and initiatives will be an added advantage.
    • A bachelor’s degree in social sciences, project planning and management, or equivalent
    • Proficiency in English
    • Excellent networking and people skills
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to prioritize, focus and deliver quality results within deadlines while meeting conflicting work demands and targets; working with or without teams with minimum supervision.

    Finance Assistant

     

    A Finance officer will supports field operations by providing technical assistance and guidance on financial management. He/She will be reporting to the Child Fund Kenya Finance manager. She/he will be based in National Office.

    Duties and  responsibilities

    • Ensure expenditures and supporting documents are in compliance with donor’s regulation/audit requirements and coded correctly.
    • Pro-actively rise issues and concerns with the Finance Manager to ensure Childfund remains in compliance with donor contract and regulations
    • Prepare financial reports in donor format which are timely and accurate.
    • Coordinating audits of recipients of grants
    • Making the necessary field visits to projects
    • Payment processing, matching requisition to LPO and invoices, ensuring they are duly approved subject to approval limits. Ensuring all appropriate documentation for any cheque payments are adequately filed.
    • All other duties assigned

     Minimum Qualifications:

    • CPA finalist
    • A Bachelor degree in accounting, commerce, finance or related discipline.
    • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in accounting,
    • Proficiency in Microsoft office & accounting packages

    Required Skills

    • Outstanding written and oral communication skills in English;  fluency in Swahili required
    • Good oral/written communication and organizational skills
    • Must be able to travel to program locations
    • Ability to work under pressure

    Required Experience

    • Specified years experience in working in the human service or social services and/or with a non profit agency, preferably community organization
    • Computer proficiency in general office software applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook)
    • Demonstrated experience with the design, implementation, management and evaluation of programs preferred
