    Agricultural Trials And Research Specialist

    Job Description

    Agricultural research and development is a critical component of our agricultural trial pipeline. Each season, we have about 4,000 farmers involved in trials on a variety of topics, including fertilizer use, seed varieties, growing methods, long-term soil health, and new crops. These trials are our first opportunity to test new agricultural technologies and methods with clients, and these are the gateway to scaling up innovations to more than 200,000 smallholder farmers in Kenya.

    Agricultural Research: You will conduct and synthesize research on a wide range of agricultural innovations and provide input into the design of our agricultural trials and overall strategy. This will include literature research, synthesizing data from internal and external sources, and consulting with experts and other institutions to prepare research summaries.

    Technical Input & Field Team Support: You will support the team of field leaders, managers, and officers that are executing our on-farm trials on the ground during the design, implementation, analysis, and reporting of trial activities. This will include providing advice and guidance, training and capacity building on agricultural topics, and supporting with mentorship and management of on-farm trial staff.

    Trials Coordination: You will assist in coordinating the implementation of all on-farm trial activities in Kenya, including procurement of inputs and materials; managing and scheduling of trial input deliveries and field activities; communication and systems coordination across departments; writing farmer trainings, surveys and materials; and tool creation.

    Qualifications

    We are seeking an exceptional professional with experience running agricultural trials in Kenya. Specific qualifications include, but are not limited to:

    • Master’s degree or above in agriculture, PhD preferred and a strong advantage. Strong connections to universities and other institutions doing agricultural research in the region.
    • Deep familiarity with the current state of agricultural research and context in Kenya, including knowledge on a wide range of agricultural topics and experience with agricultural context.
    • Project planning, management, and execution experience, including work with systems thinking and coordination; some logistics experience preferred. Ability to implement multiple projects simultaneously, while tracking and reporting on many activities within each project.
    • Leadership and mentorship experience, including a clear record of leading teams and providing professional development support for others.
    • Strong writing analytical and English writing skill, including the ability to concisely synthesize scientific and technical information from a variety of sources. Strong Excel and computer skills.
    • Good teamwork, humility, willingness to do work focused on execution.
    • Proficient in both Kiswahili and English.
    • Strong work experiences. Examples include a demanding professional work experience, or successful entrepreneurial experience (e.g. leading a conference, starting a business, solid Peace Corps accomplishments).

    Financial Advisory Services Analyst

    Job Description

    The Finance Advisory Services (FAS) team is made up of in-country analysts that are the trusted advisors to country leadership teams in the area of financial sustainability. Taking vast amounts of financial intelligence from budgets, spending patterns and projected work plans, FAS provides concise, actionable advice around how to allocate resources to best achieve the country’s scale and impact goals. The goal of our small group of financial consultants is complete financial sustainability to efficiently scale impact.

    To help achieve this, the Financial Analyst will work across functions on budgeting and quantitative analysis to give strategic advice. We are looking for someone with high leadership potential. This a career track role where you will learn valuable skills in finance and accounting as well develop a management consulting toolkit.

    There are 3 main areas of responsibility for the role:

    1. Budget (50%): You will work with departments in developing, updating, and tracking budgets. You will update monthly BVAs (Budget vs. Actuals) and associated financial reports for the sections of the entire program, working closely with our Accounting team. This requires excel skills and financial acumen, as well as the ability to maintain professional relationships and explain complex terms in simple language. Longer-term, you will own the entire budget process
    2. Analysis (30%): Building on your budget work, you will analyze financial data for trends and give advice to departments, particularly to improve efficiency. For example, you may develop a business case around developing internal capabilities for print or construction. Or you might support HR in designing a new policy to improve our transport policy. Again, this will require a mix of modeling and synthesizing complex information into actionable recommendations.
    3. Cash Forecast (10%): You will have to estimate Kenya’s Cash-flow every month. This will require constant communication with departments to forecast any unbudgeted expenses.
    4. Strategic projects (10%): In some cases, you will also implement your recommendations, such as piloting an efficiency play in a district or improving our KPI tracking. These kind of projects require getting into the field to understand our program and financials.

    Over time, you will take on larger and larger strategic questions, eventually driving large of financial strategy.

    Strategy And Research Specialist

    Job Description

Strategy & Research Specialists in the Internal Consulting Team will support managing projects to pursue these growth opportunities and operational improvements. As a Strategy & Research Specialist, you will gain exposure to many parts of One Acre Fund, as projects span across departments, such as Finance, Business Development, Product Innovations, Field Operations, Human Resources, M&E, and New Country Expansion.

    Strategy & Research Specialists will own portions of projects, focusing on primary and secondary research, and quantitative analysis. This role is part of a long-term career-track at One Acre Fund, and with strong performance, the Strategy & Research Specialist will have the opportunity to grow into the Strategy & Research Analyst position.

    Examples of the types of projects that the Strategy & Research Specialist could work on include:

    • Operational Improvement projects designed to make us more efficient and effective. For instance, analyzing farmer repayment data then devising novel strategies to increase repayment. Such work involves quantitate analysis in software like MS Excel.

    Global Logistics Deputy Director

    Job Description

    Distribution is fundamental to the core model of One Acre Fund.  In order to serve more than a million farm families by 2020, we must work to enable a cutting-edge, cost-efficient, and professional rural delivery system.  The Logistics team works in tight concert with our field teams to deliver millions of kilograms of inputs to thousands of market points and hundreds of thousands of individual farm families across Eastern and Southern Africa.  Our opportunity as a department is to build upon a strong operational foundation in order to extend our geographic reach, develop new distribution channels, and execute distributions with increasing complexity in an otherwise infrastructure starved environment.  The Logistics Deputy Director will be an integral part of this team in terms of setting vision and strategy, providing management support to our far-flung team of logistics professionals, and contributing to projects of strategic importance to our department.  Your work will have a tremendous impact on the organization’s key mission of serving the small-holding farmer.  Responsibilities will include:

    • Set Strategy and Vision
      • Work closely with the Global Logistics Director to set the vision and direction for the department
      • Drive the strategic agenda forward providing leadership on key projects and implementing them in conjunction with our country team leads.
    • Provide Individual and Team Management
      • Provide individual management support to country logistics leads in core countries as well as in pilot and growth stage country operations. This includes:
        • Leading weekly “check-in” sessions with direct reports
        • Developing hard and soft skills and providing career mentorship to country logistics leads
        • Supporting calendaring and implementation of key policies and procedures in new markets
      • Provide team management by coordinating and executing monthly team calls as well as setting agendas and leading sessions in semi-annual logistics retreats.
      • Support the Logistics Director in department recruitment activities
    • Contribute to Policy Development, Management and Oversight
      • Work closely with the Logistics Director to develop and codify policies
      • Oversee the implementation of key policy projects
    • Lead projects of strategic importance to the department. This could include projects like:
      • Overseeing monthly reconciliations and the application of shrink policies
      • Investigating and evaluating software applications to support department functions
      • Designing a standard budgeting process for new ventures
    • While the majority of this role will focus the points above, the Deputy Director may also support country operations at peak activity time. This could include short-term secondment to a country team to:
      • Support input distribution where we coordinate last-mile delivery to over 2,500 unique delivery points across our core countries.
      • Building and managing a team of warehouse and logistics professionals.  Average team size is about 10 full time employees and up to 100 seasonal employees.
      • Researching a network of 3rd party service providers including transportation, warehousing, and input suppliers.
      • Managing logistics data and inventory flows.

    • Experience in supply chain, logistics, or other operational management is beneficial, but not strictly required. Development sector experience is an asset but not required.
    • Strong analytical skills – ability to quickly review, synthesize, analyze, and communicate data.
    • Creativity and strong problem solving skills.
    • Top-performing educational background (include GPA/class marks); related Master’s Degree is an asset, but not strictly required.
    • We are looking for passionate professionals who combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service.
    • A willingness to commit to living in East Africa for at least two years – this is a long-term, career-track role.
    • Language: Fluent English required and a working knowledge of French desired. Regional languages (e.g. Kiswahili, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda) are an asset but not required.
