    Assistant Director, Foreign Service/ Counsellor 1 - 5 Positions

    Duties and Responsibilities
    Headquarters

    • An officer at this level may be deployed as a section head.

    Specific duties and responsibilities include:

    • Undertaking research on emerging international events and recommending appropriate policy interventions;
    • Tracking vacancies in the international and intergovernmental organizations;
    • Maintaining an appropriate database and facilitating employment of Kenya nationals;
    • Participating in bilateral and international conference and meeting;
    • Drafting report and identifying areas of implementation;
    • Networking with Ministries/State Departments, Intergovernmental organizations and diplomatic missions accredited to Kenya;
    • Coordinating provision of consular and protocol services.
    • Analyzing and initiating implementation of recommendations contained in reports from bilateral and international conferences and meetings as well as those from Kenyan Missions and supervising; and
    • Coordinating and supervising staff in the Section.

    Missions

    An officer at this level may be deployed as the Head of chancery in a mission. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

    • Providing administrative support at the mission;
    • Monitoring and analyzing political and economic developments in the host country and drafting appropriate reports;
    • Coordinating trade cultural and other events to promote Kenya;
    • Networking with members of the diplomatic corps, officials of the host government and media representative;
    • Drafting appropriate responses to media reports on Kenya; 
    • Coordinating official functions and programmes for Kenyan dignitaries;
    • Preparing briefs, statements and diplomatic notes and messages;
    • Coordinating preparation of performance targets development of annual work plans;
    • Prioritizing acquisition of assets and properties for the mission and developing an appropriate database; and
    • Preparation of annual budget for the mission and performance reporting and appraisal.

    For appointment to this grade, an officer must have: -

    • Served for a minimum period of three (3) years in the grade of Senior Foreign services/Counsellor II, CSG  8  or in a comparable and relevant position in the wider public service;
    • A Bachelors degree in  any of the following fields: International Studies, International Relations, Economics, Law or any other relevant discipline from a University recognized in Kenya; and
    • Demonstrated, effective leadership and managerial and administrative skills.
