Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Renal Nurse / Dialysis Nurse to join our specialized Renal Unit. The ideal candidate will have experience in providing direct care to patients with kidney disease, specifically those undergoing dialysis treatments. This role requires expertise in operating dialysis equipment, monitoring patient conditions, and providing both physical and emotional support to patients during treatment. The Renal Nurse will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring the highest quality of care for patients with renal conditions.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Preparation

• Assess patients’ physical and emotional needs before each dialysis session.
• Prepare patients for dialysis by assessing vital signs, obtaining necessary lab results, and ensuring appropriate access for treatment.
• Educate patients on the dialysis process, potential side effects, and post-treatment care.

Dialysis Treatment Management

• Set up, operate, and monitor dialysis machines to administer hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis as prescribed.
• Carefully monitor patients throughout the dialysis treatment, adjusting machine settings and treatments as necessary.
• Respond promptly to any adverse reactions or complications during dialysis, ensuring patient safety.

Patient Monitoring & Documentation

• Regularly monitor and document patients’ vital signs, fluid intake and output, and overall condition during and after dialysis.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of patient treatment, progress, and any changes in condition.
• Report and escalate any significant changes or concerns to the medical team.

Patient Education & Support

• Educate patients and their families on kidney disease, dialysis treatments, dietary restrictions, and medication adherence.
• Provide compassionate emotional support, helping patients and families cope with the lifestyle changes associated with dialysis and renal disease.
• Facilitate communication between patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care.

Equipment & Safety Management

• Regularly inspect, sanitize, and maintain dialysis machines and other medical equipment to ensure functionality and patient safety.
• Adhere to hospital protocols and renal unit guidelines for infection control, waste management, and patient safety.
• Ensure the Renal Unit is stocked with necessary medical supplies and inform the supervisor of any equipment maintenance needs.

Team Collaboration & Professional Development

• Collaborate with nephrologists, dietitians, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop individualized care plans.
• Participate in ongoing training, certification programs, and seminars to stay updated with advancements in nephrology nursing and dialysis care.
• Engage in quality improvement initiatives within the renal unit to enhance patient care outcomes.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Diploma or Degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
• Current and valid nursing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
• Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year in dialysis or renal nursing.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
• Strong understanding of kidney disease, dialysis procedures, and renal health management.
• Proficiency in operating dialysis machines and monitoring patients undergoing dialysis.
• Excellent patient communication and counseling skills.
• Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
