Technical Director at PowerGen Renewable Energy

Job Description

Reporting to the COO, the Technical Director will be responsible for overseeing all power-related technical elements of the company. Depending on fit and capacity, she or he will also lead the O&M and project management teams.

 The primary technical areas the Technical Director will lead & be responsible for include:

• Solar PV – design and engineering for solar PV projects up to the low MW scale
• Battery Storage – design and engineering for battery storage assets of various chemistries up to the low MWh scale
• AC Switchgear – design and engineering for low to high voltage AC switchgear and system integration 
• Micro-grid Controls and System Communication – design and engineering for micro-grid system integration and SCADA systems
• Transmission and Distribution networks – design and engineering for LV and MV distribution networks, including transformers and substations

Additional responsibilities of the Technical Director are summarized below:

• Develop the strategy of the PowerGen technical teams in line with the company’s vision and strategy
• Foster the professional development and training of a young, hungry technical team at PowerGen, spread across 4+ countries
• Engage closely with the business development teams to ensure that our technical work supports our customer and commercial goals (techno-economic analysis of projects and solutions) across 4+ countries
• Oversee the development and implementation of technical projects across 4+ countries
• Drive cost optimization of detailed engineering designs and bill of materials. In addition to strategic sourcing and vendor relationship management for key equipment.
• Identifying new market technical challenges and potential technology advancements to integrate in new projects and solutions across Africa
• Provide guidance on R&D efforts for various new technologies across the company
• Provide guidance on enhancements to existing grids to optimize performance
• Prepare and manage team budgets
• Champion health, safety, and environmental standards across the company
• Spearhead engagements with internal and external stakeholders 
• Prepare management and board reports as and when required
• Support in the development and management of project management standards, processes, and execution

Qualifications

You already have:

• Strong technical knowledge in solar PV, off-grid batteries, and distribution networks in Africa
• Ability to manage and grow a young, hungry team
• Ability to understand commercial considerations related to projects, interface with internal revenue teams, and build relationships with clients
• Experience utilizing engineering software tools like AutoCAD, Homer, PVsyst, Helioscope, ETAP or equivalent software required to professionally undertake MW scale PV/storage/distribution design work
• Comfort working with a small, growing company with aggressive growth targets
• Experience managing budgets
