The college, initially named as Consolata Nursing School, was founded in 1945 by the Consolata Missionaries to offer Certificate in Nursing. It would later grow and attain its current stature as a full-fledged medical college. It was renamed in the year 2019 as Sister Leonella Consolata Medical College in memory of Sister Leonella Sgorbati, a Consolata missionary for her distinguished service as a nurse at the Consolata Hospital Mathari between the year 1970 and 1983 before she was brutality murdered in Mogadishu, Somalia on 17th September 2006 during her Missionary work. It is owned and managed by the Archdiocese of Nyeri.
