    Intern – Programme and Communication Support (2 Positions)

    • Programme and Partnerships support
    • Support in the establishment and management of partnerships for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (e.g. due diligence processes, developing tool kits and guidelines, partner communication channels).  
    • Assist with the organization of internal and external meetings and outreach events, developing necessary background materials, and report writing.
    • Support the day-to-day communication and official correspondence of the UN Decade core team.
    • Support the day-to-day management and regular quality control of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s official email restorationdecade@un.org
    • Support the Secretariat function for the Multi-Partner Trust Fund and related meetings.
    • Coordination support to flagship activities and Advisory Board.
    • Provide administrative, project management, and information management support.
    • Communication Support
    • Support the day-to-day communication and official correspondence of the UN Decade core team.
    • Support the day-to-day management and regular quality control of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration’s website: www.decadeonrestoration.org
    • Assist with compiling and distributing the UN Decade’s monthly newsletter.
    • Support the coordination of translation needs and translation capacity for UN Decade communication materials.
    • Carry out other duties on a needs basis as may be required.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) focused on Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, Communications and Public Relations, International Relations, Law, Development Studies or related fields.
    • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).
    • Have graduated with a university degree. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. Programme.

    Human Rights and Conservation Specialist

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Under the supervision of the Legal Officer of Law Division’s Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit, the consultant will:
    • Finalize the options paper for a potential forum on human rights and conservation, based on stakeholder consultations, to take place in the first half of 2025.
    • Develop a stakeholder survey for priority setting for the Core Human Rights Principles for Private Conservation Organizations and Funders.
    • Organize stakeholder meetings, including online meetings and one in-person meeting, by preparing background documents, identifying participants, and drafting recommendations based on the consultations.
    • Support the development of a joint work plan with the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and other conservation organizations.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • An advanced level law degree from a university or institution of equivalent status with specialization in environmental and human rights related field, including natural resources management, environmental assessment, environmental policy, or law.
    • A minimum of seven years of experience working on the intersection between human rights law and environmental law is required.
    • Prior experience working on conservation and human rights is required. Prior experience working with intergovernmental bodies and international organizations, including United Nations agencies is required. Prior experience in analyzing information and drafting recommendations is required.
    • Direct working experience in environmental law or environmental policy is required.
    • Excellent writing and communications skills; Excellent research and analytical skills,in particular in legal analysis, and expertise; in independent research and review; Results focused; Clear and concise communication are desirable. Demonstrated capacity to work in a consultative manner, good networking and good inter-personal skills; Excellent organization and partnership management skills are desirable.

    Human Rights in Conservation Specialist

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Under the supervision of the Legal Officer of Law Division’s Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit, the consultant will: Organize consultations for strategy development:
    • Coordinate the planning and logistics for consultations aimed at developing implementation strategies for UNEP's Core Human Rights Principles for Private Conservation Organizations and Actors.
    • Engage with key stakeholders, including representatives from private conservation organizations, human rights experts, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities to ensure an inclusive consultation process.
    • Document and synthesize feedback from consultations to inform strategy recommendations.
    • Support multistakeholder platform coordination: Facilitate and coordinate the multistakeholder platform dedicated to implementing the Core Human Rights Principles, fostering cross-sector engagement.
    • Develop and maintain engagement materials to keep stakeholders informed.
    • Assist in scheduling, organizing, and documenting platform meetings, preparing agendas, and tracking action points to ensure smooth coordination.
    • Stakeholder engagement and outreach: Conduct outreach and manage relationships with diverse stakeholders to strengthen buy-in for the Principles, focusing on the inclusion of rights holders, including Indigenous Peoples.
    • Collaborate with human rights experts and other stakeholders to gather insights and recommendations that will enhance the implementation strategies.
    • Reporting and documentation: Prepare a detailed final report summarizing activities, outcomes, and recommendations based on consultations and platform engagements.
    • Provide periodic updates to the Law Division’s Frontiers in Environmental Law Unit on progress, challenges, and key milestones.
    • Other relevant assignments: Undertake relevant additional tasks, as requested by the Legal Officer, including supporting fundraising efforts.

    Qualifications/special skills

    • An advanced level law degree from a university or institution of equivalent status with specialization in environmental law, or human rights law, including natural resources management, environmental assessment, environmental policy, or environmental justice.
    • A minimum of ten years of experience, including working on the intersection between human rights law and environmental law is required.
    • Prior experience working on conservation and human rights is required.
    • Prior experience working on procedural rights and with intergovernmental bodies is required.
    • Working experience in engaging and effective communications with diverse organizations and audiences interacting and coordinating large networks/groups is required. Excellent research, writing, analytical skills and communications skills are desirable. Results-focused, Clear and concise communication are desirable. Demonstrated capacity to work in a consultative manner, good networking and good interpersonal skills are desirable.

    Marine and Coastal Environmental Management Consultant

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Under the general supervision of the Head of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat, the consultant will be responsible for the following:
    • Project Inception and Situational Analysis The Consultant will assess the available datasets, data gaps, the format, and the countries’ readiness to implement the ArcGIS Online Atlas. This will entail starting with assessing the ICT infrastructure at the designate country focal point institution/department to include available baseline hardware and the baseline software.
    • Data Collation The Consultant will identify and collate existing national and regional data in the NMC region including spatial and attribute data layers and other thematic layers required for the development of the Online Atlas, specified in terms of the data fields gathered, the currency of the data, and the veracity of the data.
    • The collated data will include: Ecological and biological data: mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reef data, fish and invertebrate species data, flagship species, megafauna, habitat mapping, migratory species corridors, and satellite imagery data.
    • Physical and oceanographic data: data on ocean currents, temperature and salinity data, sea level and wave data, wind and atmospheric processes data, sea surface temperature data, salinity and ocean chemistry data, coastal and offshore upwelling data, and oceanographic modelling data.
    • Health status of natural capital: overfishing, climate change, pollution, habitat loss/ degradation, coastal development
    • Priority conservation areas: marine protected areas and locally managed marine areas
    • Coastal and offshore uses: fishing, shipping, oil and gas exploration, tourism, marine conservation
    • Socio-economic data: fishing, shipping, oil and gas exploration, tourism, population data, data on livelihoods and economic activities, infrastructure data 

    Qualifications/special skills

    • Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) is required in Geographic Information Systems, Information Systems and management, Marine Sciences, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources Management or similar disciplines.
    • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant progressive experience in the application of geographic information systems, and information management is required.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing GIS solutions for natural resource management applications and maintenance of existing geospatial databases and related metadata systems is required.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and experience on remote sensing, obtaining biological, geophysical and socioeconomic geospatial datasets and developing geospatial databases is desired. Experience performing quality control assessments for geospatial products is desired
    • Experience working in a multidisciplinary set up with government and non-government stakeholders including international organizations and local communities is desired.
