    Physiotherapist, Physiotherapy Department

    Reporting to the Manager – Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, the Physiotherapist will independently conduct in-depth evaluation of patients referred for therapy, develop individual programs and carry out treatment.

    Responsibilities:

    • Select and administer appropriate tests to evaluate range of motion, neuromuscular status, pain and physical functional ability
    • Review medical file of patient for information pertinent in aiding evaluation
    • Identify treatment goals and appropriate therapy techniques and equipment to achieve goals
    • Advise and educate clients on their ailment and treatment
    • Conduct regular evaluation of patients to assess progress and response to therapy, revise treatment program as necessary to achieve goals
    • Advise and recommend to referring doctors on necessary interventions and or change of management
    • Document initial reports of results on evaluation of patients’ physical condition
    • Maintain daily treatment notes evaluation of patients’ progress and discharge planning notes and summaries
    • Administer physical therapy treatment using full range of treatment techniques
    • Instruct patients in the use and care of wheelchairs, braces, crutches and other adaptive equipment
    • Develop treatment plan to be followed by patient after discharge and advice the importance of continuing physiotherapy after discharge and to organize their physiotherapy appointments
    • Observe and comply with environment health and occupational safety
    • Participate in the implementation of quality initiative and patient safety programs
    • Conduct in house Continued Medical Education(CME), monitor and review progress
    • Training support staff and assessing their performance to as to maintain optimum performance level

    Requirements:

    • Diploma in Physiotherapy from a recognized Institution
    • Preferred one (1) years’ experience in physiotherapy with training in first Aid
    • Registered with the Physiotherapy Council of Kenya
    • Possess knowledge of assessment/evaluation techniques in regards to patients,
    • Proactive and have excellent customer service skills
    • Valid certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)

    Neuro- rehabilitation Therapist, Physiotherapy Department

    Reporting to the Manager – Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, the Neuro-rehabilitation Therapist will provide quality neuro-rehabilitation as well as general physiotherapy services by assessing, monitoring and reviewing client’s’ needs as well as implementing departmental policies and procedures.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assess the status of patients before providing neuro-rehab/general physiotherapy services
    • Ensure stroke pathway, policies and procedures are observed
    • Treat patients by means of manual techniques, exercise and electrotherapy
    • Teach patients and family about treatment, lifestyle, interventions, care and discharge plan
    • Provide educational information regarding exercise programmes, risk factor modification and home programmes
    • Ensure functionality of equipment
    • Ensure all patients’ documentation is done on time
    • Evaluate and monitor documentation of patients’ notes in the file
    • Monitor and ensure compliance with environment health & occupational safety
    • Participate in the implementation of quality control/staff development

    Requirements:

    • Higher National Diploma in Neuro-rehab from a recognized Institution
    • Certificate of in-house training and observership in a busy neuro-rehabilitation unit
    • Two (2) years’ working experience as a physiotherapist
    • Registered with the Physiotherapy Council of Kenya
    • Possess knowledge of assessment/evaluation techniques in regards to patients
    • Proactive and have excellent customer service skills
    • Valid certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)

    Pharmaceutical Technologist, Main Pharmacy

    Responsibilities

    • Receive, verify prescriptions and dispense drugs in a timely manner within approved standards and procedures.
    • Contact the physician immediately for inaccuracy and illegibility in a prescription order, document errors and communicate them to the nursing and pharmacy staff
    • Verify expiry dates of drugs prior to dispensing medication to patients/customers.
    • Check that every label placed on the medications contains the correct patient name, drug, quantity and directions.
    • Compound extemporaneous preparations and mix certain intravenous medications as per laid down procedures.
    • Counsel patients on drug administration and use of devices for optimum wellness and recovery.
    • Receive, return and update drug credits on the system in a timely manner.
    • Deliver drug discharges to patients in the ward where applicable
    • Communicate out of stock and non-stock effectively and timely to prescriber and nurse and provide alternative choice or make arrangements to order promptly.
    • Comply and observe the environmental health and safety measures and regulations by proper handling, storage and dispensation of medications
    • Record, monitor and update the expiry list of medications in timely manner.
    • Conduct nursing floor inspections once a month for all ward stock, solutions and patient medication left behind
    • Complete documentation of Interventions, Medication errors and Near Miss, Adverse events, Medication queries, Patient complaints or any other incidents and forward to relevant office
    • Perform random medication checks daily and Monitor variance levels in your respective satellites.
    • Compile daily satellite reports.
    • Carry out regular satellite stock-take exercise.
    • Report any special indicators allocated.
    • Maintain and update personal drug knowledge data base to ensure accurate provision of pharmaceutical care of general disease states as well as specialized knowledge in the assigned area of expertise

    Requirements

    • Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution
    • Registered with The Kenya Pharmaceutical Association
    • Practicing License from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
    • 1 year working experience in a busy faciliy, preferably a hospital
    • Heart Saver Certification.
    • Computer literate
    • Able to communicate with medical professionals
    • Able to work with a team of people from various backgrounds and training
    • Excellent customer service skills and empathetic to patients of all ages
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Culturally sensitive

    Operating Theatre & Recovery Nurse

    Responsibilities:

    • Ensure complete pre-op assessment including the surgical checklist, nursing documentation and physician’s assessment
    • Receive the patient prior to surgery, gets report from the accompanying nurse and performs pre-op checklist.
    • Circulate and assist as needed for minor surgeries under supervision
    • Ensure effective recovery of stable patients post any form of anaesthesia.
    • Assists with intubation and extubation of patient in the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and if required in the Operating Room (OR)
    • Communicate with anaesthetist and primary teams regarding patient issues and shifting plans.
    •  Promptly report both clinical and non-clinical unusual findings to the nurse manager or designee
    • Identify patient and family learning needs and initiate appropriate teaching
    • Perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia as required
    • Ensure that nursing documentation is timely, comprehensive and complete
    • Ensure all specimens are properly labelled and delivered to the lab in a timely manner
    • Provide safe environment for patients through adherence to infection control practices and other safety policies
    • Be able to recognize a patient in a pre-arrest or arrest states and initiate Basic Life Support
    • Dispose of clinical and non-clinical waste safely in accordance with Aga Khan University Hospital guidelines on waste management
    • Administer medication safely, monitor patient responses to medication and promptly report adverse reactions
    • Care of equipment through cleaning, storage, per shift check of the inventory and timely reporting and follow up on non-functional equipment to the nurse manger designee.
    • Participate in unit based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, audits, spot checks and skill checks

    Requirements:

    • RN from a recognized school of nursing or university
    • Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • Demonstrate evidence based knowledge of current practices in theater nursing

    Administrative Assistant, Population Health

    Job Summary

    The Population Health Department at Aga Khan University is looking to hire an Administrative Assistant who will be the first point of contact for the Chair of the Department of Population Health and department for internal and external enquires.

    The main role of this position will be to provide effective and high-quality administrative, organizational and content support to the Chair of the Department of Population Health and to ensure a smooth, efficient and effectively run department by demonstrating initiative in planning, organizing, management and operations, in liaison with the other AKU entities.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide support for the day-to-day activities of the Chair of the department and the running of the department and serve as the main point of contact as well as manage the Chairs daily schedule
    • Support the smooth running of all academic programs and operations in the department, including students’ selection process and administering Continuous Assessment Tests in liaison with Faculty.
    • Liaise with the Human Resources Department to ensure the recruitment, hiring, leave scheduling, training and performance reviews and staff files are up to date.   
    • Manage communication both written and verbal appropriately, by keenly taking meetings notes and prioritizing enquiries and correspondence.
    • Manage and schedule appointments, meetings and workshops by maintaining an electronic calendar, organising seminars workshops and training sessions
    • Ensure proper data management & general office administration by managing the departments shared drive and routinely restocking office supplies.

    Requirements

    • Must have at least 3 years of relevant post-qualification experience in a busy office environment, preferably in a University, an International Health NGO, health research organization or large health research program
    • Must possess a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts with preferred a Diploma in Business Management/Project Management/Office Administration or in closely related fields
    • Should have experience in coordinating or supporting a busy office
    • Should have strong interpersonal skills
    • Should have strong: oral and written communication skills, organizational and time management skills
    • Should demonstrate the ability to take initiative and set goals while working under minimal supervision.
