    Deputy Executive Director

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Initiate and implement elements of the Core platform, including responsibility for the funding application and for representing KWTRP to the funder.
    • Manage substantial research resources and budgets
    • Develop new avenues of research, concepts and ideas to extend scientific strategy.
    • Generate research income and actively promote specific research areas. Write funding applications for new projects and play a key role in establishing overall research strategy, including developingcross-disciplinary research and opportunities for other Principle Investigators and for the training of early-career scientists.
    • Regularly write research articles for prestigious international journals, book chapters, and reviews. Present papers at international conferences, and lead seminars to disseminate research findings and enhance the reputation of the Programme.
    • Promote the research group locally and nationally, disseminate research outcomes to advance knowledge in the specialist area; represent the research group at external meetings/seminars and represent the Programme to sponsors and stakeholders.
    • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups.
    • Chair committees and/or working groups.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Hold a relevant Ph.D/D.Phil with significant post-qualification research experience
    • Minimum 10 years overall experience with at least 5 years senior management.
    • Recognised international authority on a specific research area.
    • Proven ability to attract independent funding
    • Experience in leading and managing research projects and staff
    • Provide evidence of an established international publication record
    • Possess sufficient expertise to lead research programmes and develop new avenues of research
    • Experience in engagement with major stakeholders, especially arms of Government for policy impact.

    DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Experience in leading research programmes, including setting the strategic direction
    • Experience in providing specialist advice to external industry, universities, or research councils
    • Management committee experience.

    Community Facilitator I – Challenge Studies

    JOB PURPOSE: 

    This role is responsible for co-ordinating and leading Community and Public Engagement activities for the Human Infection Studies Platform within KEMRI Wellcome. The post holder will work in close collaboration with fellow Community Facilitators and the broader Engagement Platform and Communications team in activities aimed at enhancing mutual understanding between the programme and the community and other relevant stakeholders.

    Financial Responsibility:

    • Cash imprest for Engagement activities of up-to Kes. 100,000.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the planning and implementation of community and public engagement activities for all Challenge Studies.
    • Support the Training Coordinator in implementing basic and refresher training for front line staff, and especially staff in Challenge Studies.
    • Conduct continuous mapping and identification of potential engagement stakeholders and publics that can be engaged for Challenge Studies;
    • Respond to and document concerns/issues/opinions coming through the CLG helpline;
    • Ensure appropriate documentation of all Challenge engagement activities, including developing and sharing of activity reports;
    • Support the development, production and distribution of information, education and communication (IEC) print, audio and audio-visual materials for Challenge Studies;
    • Support Study field workers and other junior staff in implementation of their roles and responsibilities;
    • When called upon, support other Programme research teams to develop and implement study specific engagement activities;
    • Support broader activities aimed at building of mutual relationship and trust among communities and KWTRP researchers;
    • Enhance health and safety aspects of activities being undertaken.

    Qualifications:

    • A Higher National Diploma in community development or equivalent
    • At least 6-7 years’ experience as a Community Facilitator II.
    • Demonstrated experience with working in a research setting

    • Demonstrate high levels of integrity and confidentiality
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong Organizational, planning and administrative skills
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with minimal supervision
    • Teamwork with the ability to work diverse teams.
